I got a handout from Duke Talent Identification Program and I was wondering if that is really worth it. I scanned through the packet and the program looks similar to NYLC and those programs in DC. The price tags they place on the different courses are 2500+ and thats alot of money.

I know colleges have their summer programs for high school students and you can earn credits. I was wondering if we could sign up for programs or do they have to contact you first? A friend got one from Cornell and I'd really want to check out the Cornell seminar.

i'm pretty sure you can just sign up. go to the website for the college and most of the time they have a request information section. otherwise, if your friend isn't that interested in it ask them if you could use their form, all the applications i got don't have my name on them so others could technically use mine.

You could just sign up.
A lot of my friends did the Columbia one, I was about to do the Brown one (but I did something else), and uh..there's others lol.

If you're choosing between Duke's TIP program and NYLC, I'd definitely say choose TIP. I went to NYLC, and it's fun and a good social (not really academic) experience but really overpriced. I've attended academic programs over the summer - not the actual college-sponsored ones - but through other programs, and they're pretty rewarding.

As for credit courses, I've had friends take them - colleges generally send people info because it's a way to earn money, but you don't need that contact to sign up. Contact the college and ask them about their program, and they should give you information.

^ Thanks. And do colleges really look at whether you took academic programs?

^ Well, several of my college applications asked what you did in your last two summers. Also, if you attend a particularly rewarding program, it can make for a good essay - not to mention that some programs like Boys'/Girls' Nation are quite famous and add to evidence of your strengths.

However, don't attend some college's summer session just because you think it'll make them accept you.. colleges see summer programs in a big part as business opportunities.
