Idyllic Dreams
"I dream'd in a dream I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the
whole of the rest of the earth,
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love
" (Walt Whitman).
The gypsy awoke from her dream. She had visited a utopian world. In the world a Cherub gaurded the sanctuary entrance. The flaming gauradian gazed at the gypsy and smiled at her; overwhelming happiness filled the gypsy; she would never be alone again. Like the gypsy Walt Whitman craved peace and love. Although Whitman's "invincible city" refers to 1800's New York, his poem suggests a descret theme. Whitman claims love was the greatestquality expressed in the city. An invimncible city is no longer attainable in America, or on earth. The 21st century earth is currupt, immoral, and war-hungry. The invicible city of love will remain wishy-washy idealists' dreams and the basis of prayers.
The unattianable often appears in dreams. Dreams occur in the REM stage of sleep when "eart rate and respiration speed up and become erratic, while the face, fingers, and legs may twitch. Intense dreaming occurs during REM sleep as a result of heightened cerebral activity, but paralysis occurs simultaneously"
Quietly the gypsy reminsiced, and found no reason to wake. The Garden of Eden awaited. The angel guarding the entrance vanished and the gyspy felt Him gently take her hand. She too was gone, but she was never alone again.
