it's actually not that bad. i know people who got way worse. 1540 is higher than the nation's average, if that makes you feel any better.
retake it and stay positive. most people improve by a lot on their second try

Um, that's really good, 1600 is a perfect score.

got mid 1700s on the first try
and declined going to any classes or anything (heard it's a waste of money)
so borrowed some prep books that i cracked open for an hour or so
and did a couple hundred points better on the second try
it's just timing
i find that at the end of the year, with all the prep for AP testing and stuff, it really helped
cuz my writing jumped 100 points xDD and my reading did considerably better as well

In general maybe get a tutor, take a class, or just study on your own to raise your score. There is no one method/type of studying to raising your score because everyone is different... but you do need to study. It's annoying but necessary. Studying and practicing will help greatly

): and i just told my mother.
but to make her feel better, i said that March really was the hardest (which it definitely was).
and most of my friends didn't do so well either.
especially one of my friends, who i thought was pretty smart, got the same score as you did.
although i'm not looking forward to telling my dad,
i'll just try harder and do better in May.

are you the type who's aiming for really competitive schools?
b/c if so, then yeah, your parents will be pretty upset
but i'd tell them anyways and maybe theyll find ways to help you out.
like, enrolling you in a SAT class.
or getting you a tutor.
seeing your username.... were you born in 1992? -- so are you a junior?
b/c as a junior getting a 1540 is a bit risky :/
don't think about taking the next SAT in may b/c you won't make much of a difference (in improvement)
studying for a month won't make much of a difference.
take it in june or oct of next school year

If you're trying to get into an Ivy, then you should study hard and take it again later in the year. However, as far as I know, a lot of schools take the better of the two.

from personal experience, it is really easy to raise your sat score up to 1800-1900. the jump from 1400s to 1800/1900s is really easy. but tryin gto jump from 1900s to 2100 is tough, but still possible w/ hard work.
i don't know what your strengths are, but if you're decent at math, it doesn't take too long to raise your math to high 700s; writing is pretty easy to raise to 700s but you have to be on your toes and keep practicing.
practicing = key to everything. (almost). haha
good luck

I was forced to take classes, which didn't really help aside from all the practice tests they made me do. I improved 170 points on my second try. Take practices, from beginning to end, don't do one section, take a break, etc. It really helps. G'luck!
