Plugged my hard drive in today and turned on the comp and I got this error upon booting up, "Disk boot failure". Checked BIOS and my hard drive wasn't even listed in there. I also tried setting it up so that the computer boots from the hard drive first. That didn't wor too.

Tried using the XP recovery disk, but it said something about there not being a hard drive installed or something like that.

Everything is plugged in right. I'm assuming the hard drive is damaged or something. Is there any other way I can try to access the files on this hard drive?

If you need more details to be able to help please ask away! Thanks!

Signature too big, please change it.

Its possible your motherboard broke too. It has happened to me before
You can buy a enclosure to use the drive as USB something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16812119244 but you can often find it cheaper. It will work assuming your drive is OK but you might have bigger problems.

Actually, it could be any number of possibilities, even so small as the IDE / SATA cable being damaged. but as for your question on how to try to access the drive, if bios doesn't detect it, the only other way to see if it's the drive that's damaged would be to plug it into a completely different system.

a second, less practical idea would be to get yourself a Windows / Linux LIVE BOOT cd, which is a cd that runs the OS off of memory temporarily, and get yourself a USB external Hard Disk adapter (shown in link below). boot up the LIVE OS disk, plug in the USB Hard Disk Adapter, then mount (linux) / browse to the hard disk. (in linux, instead of mounting the HDA / SDA device, you'll have to find the USB device).

from there, its your decision on what to do, but instead of wasting money buying a new hard disk, start small in your troubleshooting by checking the least expensive items first: Bios >> Jumper on hard disk >> Cable position (master / slave) >> physical cable >> Hard disk >> Mother Board.

good luck in your troubleshooting and i hope this helps.
I make and sell (CAT-5E w/ RJ45 connectors) network cables for cheap! If you want to request a length of network cable, send me a PM or message me on AIM (see my profile), i can make both standard and crossover cables! All cables are tested to ensure they work before being sent out.
