i'm looking to buy an external portable 2.5 hard drive.....preferably a 500gb one
right now i'm deciding between these two models:
- western digital passport
- seagate freeagent go

is anyone using them now? how is it?
they seem quite reliable.
i'm hoping i won't go wrong with either of these.
i'm leaning towards WD seems it is the most common brand among all the other ones.
or are there other recommened brands as well?

I think the most common brands are WD, Seagate, and LaCie. I think Seagate is the best out of the three.

Seagate. They're pretty silent and you can get them for quite cheap.

presonally I think WD is the best, and then Seagate. All the rest are not as good.

I had a WD internal drive for about 6-7 years already, still awesome =D

I have a WD Mybook 750gb essential edition, less than 9 months old, used a few times a week (not always plugged in) now its acting up on me... normally it turns off when you unplug the usb (this is the big ones that use the ac adapter) but it has failed to turn off a few times already which forces me to power cycle it. Unfortunately the first few times I didn't notice it and it just got really hot because it stayed on for much too long. :\

Might have to use that warranty as soon as I get a few drives to backup that drive sleep.gif

Both tend to work the same. I say you get the WD as it seems to have a longer warranty between the two. WD's 3 yrs vs Seagate's 2 yrs (for those specific models anyways). Longer warranties for hard drives are always good smile.gif

WD for me. I own a 320gb portable drive. I had it for about 1 yr and still works perfectly.

I've always been a fan of the WD external drives especially the MyBook series because they had the dual USB 2.0 and Firewire ports.

I have the 320GB WD Passport myself.
Had it for over a year now. They're awesome.
No problems, pretty stable, etc.

My little brother has one as well and still no functional difference with mine even though he has it turned on every day as opposed to me who has it on maybe once a week.

i just bought my WD passport 500gb hard drive today
cost me around $95USD (i bought it in HK actually)
i'm glad i got this over seagate.....coz the shiny black looks sleek and sexy

i think some scratches has already appeared when i use it the first day!
do you guys have scratches on yours?
it's only obvious when u take a closer look
well i guess it's only a hard drive.....should be quite happy already since you can put so much mini cooper onto this small baby.
ok whatever i don't care if it gets scratched >:(

My brother got a seagate 500gig for a while and it's been having no problems. Plus I have hard time sometimes knowing whether or not it's on 'cause I can't hear crap coming out of it >.<
