"
Precordial Catch Syndrome (PCS) is the most common cause of recurring chest pain. It is also sometimes known as “a stitch in the side” or “Texidor’s twinge”. It occurs most often in children and teenagers, but does persist into adulthood as well. The pain occurs just under the left nipple, near where you feel the heart beat most strongly on the front of the chest, and comes on very suddenly.
This extremely sharp pain causes a person to not want to move or breathe. This is where the “catch” part of the name is derived. Any movement or breathing only seems to intensify the pain. The pain usually lasts for around 30 seconds to 1 minute before disappearing. Sometimes the pain will suddenly disappear upon taking a strong breath or moving suddenly as well. This can almost feel like a pop of an imaginary bubble. After the pain is gone, there is usually a dull ache that lingers.
While doctors aren’t sure of the actual causes, they are sure that it poses no danger. They believe it to be a completely benign condition and is most certainly not cause for alarm. For this reason, there is not a lot of information or studies regarding the physical cause of PCS available. Doctors feel no need to intensify study of something they know to be only a minor inconvenience.
The only real worry is that sometimes, what seemed like PCS, could possibly turn out to be something more serious. The following are signs of more concerning illness:
- Chest pain that extends into the left side of the jaw or arm
- Chest pain that a person describes as a “heavy” feeling
- Pain that does not improve at least a little after 24 hours of regular doses of ibuprofen
- Fever
- Cough, especially a cough that produces phlegm ("flem," or “flame")
- Extreme anxiety with the pain or a feeling of “impending doom”
- Blueness or paleness of the lips or fingernails
- An irregular, rapid, or pounding heart rate
- Marked difficulty breathing or catching one’s breath (different from mild pain with breathing)"
So I was very relieved after knowing that it isn't dangerous at all, but if you do have those symptoms that was listed above, you should discuss it with your doctor. I read many comments from people who experienced it at that site and the most frequent response were usually from teenagers. I asked most of my friend and they do, too, felt the same feeling. Although you feel the pain near you heart (left chest) it really has nothing to do with the heart or anything but just an association with nerves. The only way to relieve it is by taking a deep breath (even though it will sting even more).

Other informations:
Angina
General tight, band like, crushing pain felt across the front of the chest. It is generally brought on by exertion and relieved within 5 minutes of rest or after taking trinitrin.
Angina pain occurs when the heart muscle is starved for oxygen generally caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries. The pain has also been known to start as chest pain and radiate towards the jaw or down into the left or both arms. If the chest pain lasts longer than 20 minutes it is most likely due to myocardial infarction.
Types of Angina
Decubitus Angina
Chest pain when laying flat, generally appears with myocardial ischaemia
Nocturnal Angina
Chest pains which awaken the individual while sleeping
Acute Coronary Insufficiency Angina
Severe chest pain suggesting myocardial infarction but without any investigatory confirmation of infarction.
Unstable Angina
Chest pain that has become significantly worse within the previous 4 weeks (approximately). It may have started as stable angina but progressed to this unstable state. Generally in this progressed state Trinitrin does not relieve the angina chest pains.
Crescendo Angina
Chest pain which slowly increases in frequency and severity over a very short period of time. It is usually a pre-infarctive condition.
Aortic Dissection
Severe and tearing pain located in the chest or in the abdomen depending on where in the aorta the tearing is situated. Dissections occurs when there is a tear in the innermost layer of the arterial wall. Blood will dissect the vessel wall into two layers interfering with normal blood flow. Organs post dissection may lack blood creating an infarction in those organs creating other symptoms besides the extreme pain.
Myocardial Infarction
Sudden Chest pain which is severe in nature and often described as a heavy and tight pain (vice-like pain). People have described the pain as if an elephant was standing on my chest. A general concomitant symptom is whole body profuse sweating. The chest pain in myocardial infarctions are similar to that of angina pain but the pain will not be relieved by trinitrin, rest and will last in excess of 20 minutes. In myocardial infarction the patient may also feel shortness of breath and light headed ness and the patient may also collapse. In some cases the pains are thought to be digestive instead of cardiovascular while in some other cases there may not be pain, a painless heart attack.
The pain of a myocardial infarction is caused by the lack of oxygen and nutrients provided to the heart via the blood stream. This inadequate oxygenation of the heart muscle causes heart cell death or necrosis.
Pericarditis
Sudden sharp chest pain mimicking the same symptoms of a myocardial infarction or angina. The chest pain my be affected by breathing and may persist for several days and may recur. Generally, pericarditis is presumed to have a viral cause and therefore show flu like symptoms prior to the attack.
Pleuritic Chest Pain
A sharp, stabbing, well-localized chest pain which is aggravated on deep inspiration. The pain is caused by an irritation of the outer pleura which becomes inflamed.
Superficial Chest pain
This type of chest pain has many causes and many types of pain. It can be sharp and localized as in shingles (along a nerve ganglia) or dull and continuous as in intrapulmonary malignancies. There are many types of pains and many diseases which may cause this type of pain.
Tracheal Pain
Generally tracheal chest pain is felt behind the sternum and miastinal pain may feel similar to cardiac pain. Tracheal pain is distinguished from cardiac pain in that it is not aggravated by exercise.

I have something similar to yours. I thought I was having a heart attack, but circulation in my left arm is very very bad.
I was wondering if you experience the left arm ache. But I think for me, it may be a pinched nerve. I gotta go to the MD.

Well I do have that sharp pain on my upper arms too, but it was rare. It mostly occur near my left chest and lower ribs area.
And when I felt the sharp pain near my heart I felt like I had a heart condition but was too afraid to confront to the doctor.
Everytime when I felt the pain on my chest I would say how my heart hurts (not that much) to my family and friends and they would think I was heartbroken by some guys or something. So I thought I was the only one who experienced it and it bothered me. It says it's not serious though, but I'm not sure for the arms?

i'm not so sure about the upper arm bit
but I use to have this really sharp pain in my chest area, n it feels like its near the heart
i didn't exactly wantd to move @ all coz every time i moved it hurt pretty much ><
so i used a hot water bottle to make the pain go awaii a bit which kind of work but temporarily
i even went online to search stuff relating to it n i thought for a while i got this heart disease ><
later i found out it was heart burn
which was caused by gastric juices overproducing
i didn't exactly eat the proper medicine like my lanta or zantac
so it resulted me in throwing up a lot later on ><
so mebe i guess u should just check ur chemist to see if u have similar symptoms labeled to that of the heartburn medication box?

I love you too! <3 Both sides? hmm.. I never felt it both side yet, only the left. And yes, it's bothersome.
It occurs when I'm either sitting still in class and in yoga class when I'm doing exercises.
My friends and family were concern about me since I whine about it alot.
but yeah it goes away after a min
Well I can't guaranteed it's not dangerous, but the site said it wasn't. Even though it has nothing to do with your heart nor lungs, if it is really painful you should still do check up when you have time. This sharp pain happened like a month ago, which grew my attention on it.
Me too. I'm not a doctor, only a student in highschool. ^^

But the way you described it was so exact. When I try to breath, it hurts more! But eventually it goes away after a few seconds. *phew*!

Basically it seemed as if it was really hard to breathe, and if I did, it hurt really bad and I couldn't move.
I asked the doctor and she said I didn't have any breathing problems and whatnot, and she gave me some tums o.o"
It actually works! Everytime my chest hurt, I would eat one and drink plenty of water and then I'd feel better.
I haven't had that pain in several weeks now.
