Questions About Stony Brook University

1. In the Stony Brook dorm room, will we receive bookshelves? Like, not the ones attached to the top of the computer desk, but separate ones to hold all of our textbooks?
2. What is the Campus Bookstore Account for, and do we really need it?
3. Where is the best place to buy dorm supplies?
4. In the corridor-type hall, how are the showers separated, and where would you put/keep your shower supplies? Because I went to the Accepted Students Day today and we saw one at Gray College, but I didn't really look at the shower area...
Can I just say that I actually love the campus and I love the corridor-type dorm at Gray College specifically. (: I'm really excited to go there.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds. (:

Nope. i would recommend you bring your own bookself like those build able mesh cabinets.
2. What is the Campus Bookstore Account for, and do we really need it?
Its just to put money onto your account (your ID card) so you dont have to pull out a credit card/cash to pay for books. YOU DO NOT NEED IT. textbooks are actually cheaper at a bookstore across from the LIRR station called StonyBooks. I would only recommend this to people who does not have a credit card/ bank account so parents would just put in money into the student's card so its easier.
3. Where is the best place to buy dorm supplies?
Anywhere... college book store or the Wolfie's store in the SAC
4. In the corridor-type hall, how are the showers separated, and where would you put/keep your shower supplies? Because I went to the Accepted Students Day today and we saw one at Gray College, but I didn't really look at the shower area...
Oh you should have told me. i just showed a soompi-er today around Mendy.
In the corridor style dorms, the stalls are right next to each other. theres a bench you can put your stuff (in the stall) then a curtain that separates the shower and your stuff. Showers are like the ones at the pool.
My best advice is: Don't stress it. SBU pretty much has everything you need some how or another.
feel free to PM for any more questions
EDiT: bring flipflops though because the shower stalls can get disguisting..

1] Is there a difference between Mendy and H-Quad? If so.. what? [I know the food court is in H-Quad]. Or with your opinion, which one is better? (leave reasons please!)
2] Which building is considered the best [or favorite.. in your opinion] in Mendy? I'm not too interested in o neil since it has the most quiet lifestyle.. i liek to socialize.
If you guessed; I was assigned to mendy but I was kind of hoping for hquad so i wanted to know the difference; i heard that mendy was cleaner though.. but hquad was more convenient.. is it a long walking distance or a hassle in the snow?
also is it horribly hot in the dorm rooms near summertime? [like when you start school in april-sept and near when school ends].. cause if it is im going to melt / die :[.
heat = horrible for hair, makeup & face. or mine at least, lol.

No... i dont really see any differences. I think Mendy is closer though because H-quad is more deeper into the "forest".. LOL its really hard to judge but Grey College in Mendy is pretty much the closest across the street from the Union and the Stadium, so it gets kinda loud. H Quad stereotypically is full of jocks and "meat-heads" wheres Mendy is full of nerds with honor students and wise students. STEREOTYPICALLY.
So, no, there isnt much differences between the two. I like Mendy more.

I like Grey from Mendy and Benedict (food court) in H-quad, probably only because they are the ones I've been in the most but again, there are no real differences between buildings. Plus, you dont get to choose anyway.
ROTH QUAD! LETS GO SSO. Science and Society. It's the BEST quad ever! Because we are:
1. Equipped with AC
2. Closest to the academic buildings, esp Javitz. cloestest to everythingggg! (except the Union)
3. Roth Regatta every year (coming soon), drunken geese, our own raidoactive lake
4. Food court open til 12am with wendy's, pizza and subs.
5. WIRELESS YO! (even though it's underground. other buildings are getting wireless too but we've always had it. )
6. Gershwin is a cooking suite
It conquers ALL.

My bro said nerds party the hardest..idk LOL..
Oh gee, meat heads sound pretty scary though.. the weird thing is.. my cousin got placed in H-Quad and he doesn't drink or party and he's a nerd (not a bad way LOL); meanwhile I'm the partyer and drinker and I got placed in the nerd place. (not meant to sound mean) lol!
& If you want to switch quads do they ask why and get on ur buttocks on it? I msged the admissions office [where i was told to contact about dorm pref] cause i wanted h-quad; but they told me to call.. im afraid they'll bite my head off or something when i give a retadred excuse lol
edit: and OMG they wont put me in 24 hour lifestyle if i asked NOT to be in it would they? IF SO I will slit my wrists lol

plus, do our majors or w/e have a big effect on which undergraduate college we're placed in? I was placed in Global Studies but my major's journalism/english.

Roosevelt is like the ghetto of Stony Brook from what I've been told. I've never been in there myself but it should be like any other corrider quad, just crappier looking.
Also, your major doesn't really affect what building you live in. I'm a journalism major as well but I live in Kelly which is the Human Sexual and Gender Development center. I also live in a 24 hour quiet building but I can assure you that it's not enforced at all.

I'm planning on going away this summer and I just happend to be coming back on 8/28. I can already tell that my timing is really tight. Does anyone know by when dorming freshmens have to get to Stony by? Like the date? Someone told me I had to stay over the weekend before classes start or something. Anyone know what date classes start in that case??

i just finished paying my deposits and i can't find it
oh and stoner_beans, is your sig from a song by daphne loves derby? i looooove dld!
yup here's the breakdown between cooridoe and suite quads:
Mendy, H-Quad, and Roosevelt are Corridors.
when you select your housing preferences, just make sure you select the quad you want to be in the highest (5 out of the 1-5 scale)
Tabler is the Arts and Humanities
Roth is Science and Society
Kelly is Human Development
Mendy is Info Tech Science (???? forgot lol)
H-Quad is Leadership and service
Roosevelt is Global studies
and yeah it is DLD lyrics
It conquers ALL.

you can move in anytime, it's just that you probably have to attend the Freshmen Orientation Part 2 crap.
It's so dumb -____- so yeah, i think you shuld have to move in by that time.
Plus, you will prob get last choice on the beds if you come later
Classes start Monday, August 31st, 2009!

It USED to be known as the "ghetto" but most, if not all, of the buildings have new furnitures and carpeting. I loved my Greeley room so much that I lived there for 2 years (freshman & sophomore), lol. We had the biggest room in the corner (even bigger than the doubles at H & Mendelson). It's really not that bad.. I'd say that your dorm experience truly depends on your roommate and your neighbors. Mine was awesome!
-edit- Oh I'm not sure if they've changed it now that it's been 3-4 years but undergraduate colleges don't matter at all. They just make you sit through seminars for your first year and that's it. After that, you only need to focus on your major curriculum.

I heard the opposite.. that once you request, it's almost definite.
But then again, I also heard from someone else that it's 50/50.
Freshman always get tripled D;
