Hi,
I just recently got hooked to photography. So, I wanna know from you guys what's the best DSLR or a digicam perhaps i could get as a beginner. I mean the price, the quality of the pictures and its quality as well.

I started with a canon 40D, paid $800 AUD for it with a sigma 17-70mm lens for $250.

I started with a Canon 450D, 55mm kit lens, various lomo cameras, and a 55mm-250mm telephoto zoom lens.

If you want a DSLR worth the price, get a 450D with the 55mm kit lens. It comes with the lens so beginners don't have to buy a separate lens. I got it for around $900 but now it's $700. You get what you pay for and I definitely love the quality of the camera.

Start with whatever camera you can afford. It's the photographer that gets the good shot not the camera. Experiment, take a lot of photos and have fun.

hmm. i thought the d40 is discontinued, might be just australia though.
ive been trying to find one for ages haha.

but yeah, for its price, the d60 is probably the easiest to find / cheapest / best slr for beginners atm.

I think so too, but there's D40X.

As hblee82 said, it's not the camera as much as it's the eye that you need. I've seen some people start off with a dslr but still got nowhere, and it's a waste.
So for starters I suggest you get something cheaper to see if you'll do good and after a few months get a dslr.

Is it? It's still available here in Canada.. though the release of the new D5000 is said to be replacing D40/D60. Quite a big jump I say.

If you plan on getting a bit serious with photography, you'll eventually need something other than kit lenses. I'm sorry to say but the D40 doesn't offer AF across all Nikkor lenses. For that, i'd stay away from the D40.

even if nikon discontinued the d40 lots of stores and online stores still have them in stock. check bhphotovideo.com

it might be cheaper to buy just a camera body and a third party 18-55mm lens. im not sure too lazy to calculate it.
sure nikon d40 is cheap and a good beginners camera. but ill tell you that nikon lenses are significantly more expensive than canon lenses. of course that extra money you paid give you that extra feature or better quality. also, if you ever get into photography deep enough, you'll quickly learn that the d40 has lots of disadvantages over nikon's higer end cameras.

I started with the SonyA700 with kit lens 16-105mm. ($1.5k)

It all depends how much time you will dedicate to photography. Some people just use it for mindless shots without learning much about the basics, composition or lighting etc... It is the biggest waste ever. (Especially when they don't try Manual mode.)

If you're not in for the long ride, and you're just trying it out?
Get a compact camera or a cheaper SLR like the nikon D40-D60.

I ditto this.

:]

I got the Nikon D40 and I'm thinking about selling it because I want to upgrade to a newer
version. If you have a "photography" store near you, I'm pretty sure they sell
used cameras . that's probably the best way to go unless you know what you want
and you want a NEW camera.

Good luck!

i like that quote =]

but i think there's a thread for this already. i agree with the ones who say get what you can afford. in the end the photographer takes the picture, not the camera.
