For all newbie cooks, following a recipe can be quite challenging sometimes!
What are a some of your big cooking blunders that resulted in a not so edible good?

Here is my example:
A few weeks ago I was attempting to make a lemon meringue pie for the first time in my life, and everything went wrong!
Blunder 1: Yolk inside one of my eggs was already broken. This resulted in a not so perfect separation of egg yolk and egg white, which is so very important to making a perfect meringue!
Blunder 2: Did not read the whole instructions first, and realized I needed to add the water to the dry ingredients on the stove a little on the late side, resulting in a brown coloured caramelized lemon filling.
Blunder 3: It took me so long to make the meringue that the filling was cooling. The oven was long preheated, so I had the genius idea to balance the bowl of filling between the opened crack of the top of the oven door and the stovetop for the heat to keep the filling warm. It balanced, and when I turned around, it fell onto the floor. Upside down.
Blunder 4: On attempt #2 for the meringue, added 'tartar sauce' instead of 'cream of tartar'. Who knew there was a difference? Who knew cream of tartar was a POWDER?

Needless to say, the whole pie was a failure, except for the pie crust, which I bought frozen from the store.

So now, share your stories! Include pics if you have them XD

P.S. I hope a thread like this hasn't been made, I searched the last 10 pages. mellow.gif

I made my first lemon meringue pie a couple days ago! ohmy.gif
Not to add insult to injury but mine turned out quite good, :$ (But personally, I'm not a big fan of lemon meringue, x_x)
But... biggest baking blunder for me, would be the first time I made chocolate chip cookies back when I was 10, I used salted butter instead of unsalted butter.

Needless to say, those cookies were salty.

I tried to make a barbecue chicken pizza for my family the other night, since I made one with my friends that was amaaazing, but the one I made was not. If I'd taken it out of the oven as soon as it was done, it would have been fine (it looked beautiful actually T__T) but since my dad was running late I left it in the oven for a while longer. I figured since I'd turned it off that it would somehow just stay nice and warm. Of course ovens don't work that way though and what we ended up with was the chewiest brownest (from the cheese overcooking) grossest pizza ever.

It didn't get burnt, but tears.gif I was so upset. I bought all the ingredients myself and it was perfect at the 20 minute mark...

Blunder #3 made me giggle, and then I thought "well at least you made the crust right!" until I read the rest of the sentence. laugh.gif But at least we know enuogh to do better next time!

My sister cannot cook AT ALL! It usually turns out horrible unless it's an instant food!

Disaster #1:

I came home sick from school, so my sister decides to make me chicken soup - Campbell's Canned Chicken Soup.
Horrible idea.

You know how they have that part on the can where it says suggestions? It said to make it Egg Drop Chicken Soup, so she did that.
She cracked the egg and plopped it in while mixing the soup. The egg stuck to the chicken and the noodles!
To make it even worse, it said to add cheese as a topping. You wait until the soup is cooled then you top it, right?
The genius adds chopped up cheddar cheese as it melts into the soup. The result was melted cheese, plopped egg instant chicken noodle soup.

That was the worse soup ever! But, she tried, so I ate it. Oh, the pains of being a younger sister!

Disaster #2

This is both my sister's and my fault. So what happened was our Mom left out quail eggs to boil when she had to go to work.
She said to get them in 10 minutes. We were watching TV so after like an hour, we hear a *PLOPBOOMPLOP* (Yes, plops and booms!)
It turns out we forgot the eggs and they exploded with no damage to our house! Thank God that was okay!

- BUT-

There was exploded quail egg on the floor. AND THE CEILING! We ended up having to clean it up with a mop!

- forgot to put oil in the pan & had a hard time scraping the burnt scrambled egg
- accidentally left a mitten next to the stove
- a dish exploded in the microwave. probably overreheated or sth

i tried to make french macarons for spanish class.
and i couldn't get the shells to say in a perfect circle. they kept mixing in with each other.
so i was like ... "ok, i'll just use a cookie cutter to make them round when they're done"
so after baking them
1. they wouldn't come off the wax paper (i didn't have parchment paper so i substitute for wax)
2. the inside was still gooey but if i still baked them, the outside would've definately burn
3. round cookie cutter idea was stupid.
since i was so pissed at my teacher for making me do this instead of making egg rolls, i took the crap disaster to school and threw it on her desk for lunch.
it all took 'til about 1:00AM to finish and clean, so i was MAD.

I baked cupcakes and had no idea what went wrong!
But the end product was horrible. Gahh, I don't even know what I did wrong.
Probably measured all the ingredients wrong. T__T
Anyhow, it tasted so bad we had to throw it all away.

wonder.bang.is.pure.fate hah, my brother is exactly like your sister! When he was making pasta, he was going to put the shells in before boiling or even adding water to the pot sleep.gif.
And when he made Kraft Dinner, he put in the cheese powder BEFORE he drained the noodles, double fail.
And I have set eggs on the counter, turned my back and have the eggs roll off the counter and splat onto the floor T.T

I was baking a cappuccino cheesecake for the first time . Spent half my day prepping, baking, then cooling; only to have a horrible cheesecake. It looked great, but it tasted bad....I forgot to add the sugar sleep.gif

I burnt tapioca pearls. EVERYTHING stuck to the bottom of the pot and just congealed together in this black burnt gross smelling mass.
Took forever to clean. I CAN NEVER SEEM TO GET TAPIOCA RIGHT WHYYYY. this was my 5th(!!!) attempt.

Oh. And I also turned on the wrong burner and wondered why my sugar syrup wasn't boiling.

so out of it. hopefully my pretzels will make up for this night ><

another blunder... I mistook my 2/3c measuring for my 1c cup when baking chocolate chip cookies.
and I accidentally made brownies with 2/3c cocoa powder instead of 1/3c cocoa powder

blah i suck xD

When I was five I tried baking cookies. I think the recipe consisted of flour, eggs, margarine (NOT butter), white sugar, water, and chocolate chips. Needless to say, my family was much too kind to have eaten it with me. =X

And about five months ago I overcreamed the butter and sugar to my chocolate chip cookies (because I was lazy and mixed with my bare hands) and the cookies turned out goopy and disgusting. tears.gif I was so heartbroken because it's a recipe I use all the time. I also threw the batter away after baking crappy cookies for thirty minutes.

OH! And the last couple of times I've tried making French Almond Macaroons, TOTAL FAIL. I've given up on them. The first time I was all right, though there were a lot of cracks (which is kind of fail in itself), but the two times I tried after that.... tears.gif I did everything wrong. I've given up on french macaroons.

I've never made any huge blunders worth mentioning but I'll share some that my friends have made:

- using msg instead of salt
- using tablespoon instead of teaspoon for salt

LOVE & RESPECT.

i remember in grade 8 french class we each had to
bring some sort of dessert made by ourselves for everyone

so i thought i'd make cheesecake. except i thought cream cheese
was a short term for sour cream and normal cheese mixed together

... yea, not so appetizing

I used banana as a substitute for egg in a cake recipe (HEY, some people on a cooking forum said it would work!)...ick. The cake was so sticky and almost-gooey, it wasn't fluffy at all since the egg is traditionally a "rising" agent...

What else? ...well I tried to make pajeon from scratch. Apparently it's a LOT harder than to mix water in with the pancake mix bought from stores. rolleyes.gif
