It's definitely okay to make food for your mom on mother's day.
It'll be a great surprise to her too.
It's like eating a meal that was prepared for you by the one you love. ^^
She'll love it even if it because it was made by you!

My mom doesn't even like it when I spend money on her
My cooking's average. It's not amazing but it doesn't taste terrible.

but
usually if this is like your first time cooking. i would go coffee, french toast. with a rose/flower and give it on a tray when she wakes up! pretty easy. and you can't screw up. plus you don't have much to clean up. and you can add a salad or something. b/c it's not that hard to toss vegetables into a bowl.
I have a salad dressing recipe that I really like to make b/c it's simple and easy. if you want, pm me and i'll give it to you.
i think cake is rather heavy for morning. but that might be just me.

lol. I meant it would be a dessert after dinner
But I'm not making cake anymore since we just had cake yesterday.
I'm going to make Alton Brown's french toast for breakfast and maybe an omelete, and later throughout the day- black sesame dumplings: http://rasamalaysia.com/black-sesame-dumpl...=400#image-2819 , chinese greens with oyster sauce: http://rasamalaysia.com/restaurant-style-c...se-greens-with/ , and broccoli: http://mochachocolatarita.blogspot.com/200...ribs-spicy.html
