So my mom calls me today and tells me that she accidentally sent out sensitive material to the wrong email address.

She was supposed to send her id + SSN to her insurance agent so that he could update some material, but she typed in the wrong email address...and well, now she's screwed.

So I guess my question is, how does she rectify this situation
(if she had consulted with me before sending out this email, I would have told her that SSN + other sensitive material NEVER gets sent over email...but whatever.)
and also, how does she go about checking to see if anyone is using her SSN (to open bank accounts, credit cards, etc.)

G-d...I'm so pissed at her right now. How could she be so STUPID?

Wow you're messed up for saying your mom is stupid.

Aside from that you can monitor her credit report to show activity. Its a service for them to monitor it (monthly fee).

Okay that's better, haha.

Well yeah keep an eye on her credit report. I think equifax or one of the credit companies offer such a service. Hopefully wherever she sent it to is a dead email (no one uses it).

I got my SS card stolen so i've some-what been in that situation. I called and put my ss# on identity theft alert. I also have some credit inform thing from my credit card where they send me information on my credit so it shows address changes or any activity regarding my credit/ss#.

That's pretty much all she can do. Notify the credit bureaus about the situation. I believe you need to call just 1 since the 3 of them share information or something but you can call all 3 to be safe. I think they keep it on identity theft alert for about 3 months or was it 30 days.. (?) and then you need to let them know if you want to make it longer.
Some say i'm a genius, others say i'm crazy
but they all say i'm a little on the weird side

i'm about to introduce you to the two most precious words in the english language: credit freeze

you basically call the credit bureaus and have them freeze your credit. that way, the bureaus can't release credit information until the credit freeze is stopped. there can be a fee to freeze or unfreeze her credit, but meh, a small investment to prevent the stress and theft. i had to freeze my credit when wells fargo gave away compromising information. but it kept those friggin thieves from opening new credit cards in my name!
