Whenever I watch the news, it seems like every single reporter on that news channel has twitter. Besides that, politicians have started using twitter now. Its understandable that they want to become more relevant in our lives and want to inform their followers of what they're doing, but the things they update us on twitter...they aren't even really informing us...its just some witty few sentences they made up to sound exciting.
And the news doesn't just use twitter, they talk about using twitter...which is all the more crazy.
can someone put a positive light on twitter and make me change my mind?
[EDIT] 6/24
With the ongoing situation in Iran and the protests...it seems that twitter has been a big help to the Iranian people on finding about about the most recent updates...so it looks like twitter is finally put to good use.

"I'm going to sleep"
"I woke up"
"I'm going to the bathroom"
... Seriously. People's lives are not that interesting.

As a student in Commercial Design some twitter pages are quite helpful:
http://twitter.com/ilovetypography
Gives you a quick run through of daily design news. And if wanting to look more in-depth,
I can go to this individuals blog.
For celebrities I see how it works to their advantage; being able to lay rumors to rest and keep updated with other fellow celebrities.
Not really of use to normal folks unless you really love the daily gossip and want to stalk a celebrity.
However do I find it annoying how regular news stations take advantage and use it as an advertisement outlet.
Really not needed when they have their own websites and news/community forums.

Twitter is for microblogging. It allows celebrities to instantly interact with fans, which I think is hella cool, because I've gotten the opportunity to talk to some of the people I look up to. I also can stay up on my friends / acquaintances without talking to them (because I really don't have the time / inspiration to all the time) and I can ignore or not respond to anything because it's not so personal.
And there's dudes on it with inspirational quotes every day, which is really nice. Or just a quick joke / funny pic / piece of news to share.
I like it. And for all the people that don't like it, I'm glad they're not on it, because they're what makes Facebook Facebook, and what keeps Twitter Twitter. Facebook is for complainers! :P (no no, seriously, check the status updates on Facebook and then compare them to Twitter. You can't honestly tell me that Facebook isn't more ego / gossip driven)
"I hate change! I hate new things! I HATE HEARING ABOUT THEM!", get over it, eventually you're the ones that end up on the bandwagons.

i didn't "get" twitter when i first started using it, but now am finding it a great way to keep updated on events in my area, news blips, recent scientific/medical findings, etc etc etc. it all depends on who you're following and how you use it.

I agree to an extent, but I much rather load up the front page of NYT or whatever I am following.

It's like going to Florida then saying "I've never been to Alaska, but I bet its like Russia. Not going."

Think of it this way everybody:
Facebook's primary function is showing who you are (your pictures, your name, your favorite books, movies, quotes, blah blah), and it's secondary is what you can say
Twitter's primary function is what you say, and it's secondary is who you are
I don't want people to know who I am, just what I say... do you follow? That's right, I'm twitter's holy warrior of light, and shall defend it until its last day!!!!!!!!!!! *PULLS OUT HUGE SWORD* BYAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
