OK. Heres the thing. I'm going to UW Madison. Got in, everything is registered and all that jazz. I still need to do my orientation but thats during the summer.

My QUESTION is... I want to study a language. I have no idea what so ever how to speak it, write it, understand it, Its Japanese if you want to know, and i was wondering if they'll still let me take like Japanese 101. Would that be basic enough for me or not? And would it count for credit?? BEcause come on! I need to plan how much its going to cost me.

I'm sort of stressing out because UW Madison is the best in-state college for me and it was my first choice just because they have good language programs and study abroad sponsors. But yes i'm stressing out because i dont know if they'll let me take a Japanese study course and that itll count for credits.

AND ANOTHER THING: I'm going to be an English major. Would that make a difference? I might double in asian studies depending on how things work out. And minor in music or art. Even if taking Japanese 101 doenst count for credit I'm still taking the course. But i was just wondering if it would count for credit and if they'll let me take it outside my major if I'm not double majoring.

ANY IDEAS?????? I wanted to do this in here instead of the pre-college subforum because everyone in here should already know what i'm talking about and how to help. Thanks!!!
I've got so much to prove.

what it sounds like to me is that you want to learn japanese as an elective while majoring in english and or asian studies. you should take japanese 101 pretty much almost all 101 or 100 level classes are for beginners where they should teach you the basics and if you want to continue in that direction you would then enter the 200 or 300 level classes where it becomes more in depth later on. about the credits, if your not going to major in japanese then it could just count as an elective course where you'll get credits but it may not be towards anything except your total credit count. you could always think of the possibility of doing a double major with the english/asian studies and maybe a minor in Japanese if possible or you could switch it around and do 1 major and 2 minors
Always know if the juice is worth the squeeze

i just quickly looked around the uw madison website for east asian studies and if you're going to do a double major with english and eas, then you wouldn't need to minor in japanese. in order to major in eas, you are required to at least two years of japanese, chinese, korean or tibetan. i don't think the intro 100 level courses will count for credit towards the major, but anything after that does.

and i loved madison when i visited! really liked the atmosphere of a big 10 school. and it would've been a change of pace. my dad went there for his master's and ph.d and my cousin went there for undergrad but transferred to upenn. however, oos tuition was about the same as instate tuition for cornell so that's where i'm going this fall. =]
