In all the years I've listened to kpop, I don't think I've ever come across so much negativity or outright hatred against an artist's debut as 4minute has been receiving. Their youtube videos are flooded with people commenting on how they are a disaster, an embarrassment or how they are copying other artists and I find this all a bit unnecessary and completely exaggerated. First of all, none of their performances have been close to the worst or most embarrassing kpop performance I've seen. Second, the copying accusations are really getting irritating; since when is this news in kpop? The girls don't even have a say in what they wear, sing or what their concept is anyway. Third, certain fans of a certain female group insist on bashing them and highlighting how much better their group is when in reality, there really isn't a huge difference between the two (why oh WHY can people not be mature and level-headed about these things? Will it kill them to like, or at least acknowledge, another group in the same genre as their own beloved idols? what's wrong with a little friendly rivalry?).
That is not to say that some of the criticism hasn't been earned. Yes, their performances have been shaky; two of the girls don't look ready for a debut and three out of five are completely forgettable on stage. However, they are led by two strong personalities (jiyoon is awesome, hyunah has been somewhat of a disappointment...) and the song is pretty catchy, although the concept of the song has been used numerous times before.
People say that they are a disaster but I think if their company does a good job promoting them and figuring out ways to make them stand out amongst a sea of other girl groups, they have a pretty good chance at being successful (just look at all the publicity that they are already getting). I think, and hope, that this group is going to be one that steadily improves their stage presence and talent.
