Those of you with a BMW,Mercedes,Audi,Lexus,Acura,Jaguar or Infiniti, do your cars have to have premium gas or can it run on regular 87 octane? Looking for a luxury car without the premium gas requirements...

some are required and some a recommended.

for example. the acura TL is recommended to use premium but you don't have to.

most of the engines are very advance in that it will recognize the grade of fuel and retard the timing. so if you used regular grade fuel in the TL, it will retard the timing of the engine to adapt to the fuel.

if it says PREMIUM FUEL REQUIRED then only use premium.

I'm looking at the Acura TL, Infiniti G, Jaguar X-type, Lexus ES, BMW 3-series and Mercedes CLK series in particular so if anyone has any experience with them...

Well, I know some cars have horrible sensors and don't do well with lower octane gas. The result is engine knocking, which isn't very good for the car.

If that happens, up your octane for sure.

Most cars within the last 10 years have knock sensors. If the octane is too low then the car will compensate. If the car is reccomended or required to run on premium, it will still work with regular but the loss in horsepower and milage makes it pointless. The savings in money is negligible because it will use more gas if not on premium. Basically, if the car recommends or requires premium fuel, use it. and why exactly don't you want premium gas ?

I know the '06 TL's can run on regular fine cuz my friend has one and he runs regular (87 octane) on it since gas is so expensive. No problems at all.

TL's are made for premium fuel and it will mess up your engine in the long run, i have a 07 tl-s myself and this has already been discussed on acurazine, go search it up if you dont believe me. btw, it does say PREMIUM FUEL REQUIRED on a TL

you are saving about $2 or so per fill up and your friend is going to have to spend more money then that on damages to his engine in the long run. also it makes your friends car runs worse.

if you willing to spend that kind of money on a car, then you should have the money to pay for the gas.

Cant afford the gas, then dont get the car and pretend you have the money.

When I feel my wallet is in a pinch and I cant afford the gas, I just drive my 10 year old honda around.

Not to mention that the premium fuel packs additives that help keep the intake valves and fuel injectors clean. Regular gas usually doesn't.

For my Volvo, which has a turbocharged engine, running premium is virtually a must, because i've ran regular for three fill ups and noted that the MPG went down, as well as a lost of performance. So the $2-3 savings isn't worth it because its costing me more in the long run to run regular. I didn't run regular to try to save money, I ran it purely for testing purposes.

For my Acura MDX, it was recommended that I put in premium, so I just go it. Plus when I put in regular, it seems like the mpg goes down.

If you got the money to get a luxury car, you should have the money to put in premium gas right?

Unless the car states that you should be using premium, it's best to just use the regular octane because that's what your car is built for.
Don't go and use the premium on a car which doesn't state to do so just cause you think it's going to be better for it because really, it's not.

Generally, not using premium in a turbo is DEATH unless you have a modified fuel injection.

However, about using the "Plus" fuel with luxury cars, isn't that possible as well since it's in between the premium and the regular?

chillax dude... my bad about the grade of fuel to be used in the TL.. don't have to be rude about it..

and i don't think using regular is gonna damage it too much.. honda engines are pretty freakin strong and i'm sure he wont have it long enough to spend money fixing the engine from using reg. fuel.

sorry if it sounded rude, didnt meant to be. also hes probably getting worse mpg like what the other people said above. its not that honda engines are strong are not, its that its made to pump premium and not take unleaded. which means to less mpg/power and damaging the internals.

My mother's 3 series is very sensitive. It knocks on 93 octane and puts the check engine light on. 94 seems to be okay. So I would recommend against the 3 series if you want to use lower fuel grades.
