I have a Korean friend of mine who I've had to apologize to more than once because other obligations make it so that the plans I made with her either have to keep being shifted or cancelled entirely. I realized that people out here have a tendency to give small gifts as thanks or apologies and I want to give her something - As much as I can without being unintentionally rude/insulting/or over-giving so as to make her uncomfortable. I really have no idea what to choose and apparently color can matter for gifts out here....

Anyone got anything they can tell me?

(Things messed up again not even half an hour ago and I couldn't meet her like we were supposed to so we just quickly met for five minutes...and she was the one that gave me a gift DX A sea shell that was crafted with a personal message for me (she bought it at one of the craft stalls at the school right now because of a festival. She had it made)...which apparently wasn't entirely dried and just made because a few small pieces of the writing flaked off....I dunno if it would be harsh to ask her again what it said since that happened - triple DX)

LOL I dont know why you had to point out that shes korean? .__.
or are they special customs that we should be considering...

haha anyways, hmmm if you want to give her a gift I suggest something sentimental as she gave you something sentimental as well. Handcrafted gifts are a way to go as it shows you put alot of effort into it or I'm sure there must of been something she really wanted and if you actually listen to her and you get it for her she appreciate you for listening her likes and dislikes.

If not.. something matching? If you guys a good friends like a phone key chain would be something cute. (:

Yea, it was cause of 'customs' that I pointed it out, haha
Apparently, even coloring can matter in a gift cause it could mean the wrong thing so....XP

I have no idea of what I could possibly handcraft her....the only thing I'm remotely good at is drawing but I don't know if that would be enough or even what to draw.

And we don't know too much about each other likes and dislikes...I know, seems odd. It's a lot to explain so the basis is just that when I came to Korea, my University assigned her as my helper for any adjustments I might need to make. It was only for the one semester though and we couldn't meet much because back then it was her that was busy. We kept in touch afterward anyway though and have hung out now and again.

She doesn't like anime, that much I can pretty much gather, haha
Don't know what to draw....I had though maybe a pic of a flower but then I thought it might get connected to a funeral in meaning, lol

lol You're overthinking! tongue.gif Sure, certain colors can mean certain things, but Koreans these days don't really care. Especially since you're not from there, so they'll be more understanding.
A drawing sounds nice. I don't think she'll connect the flower with funerals. lol You should include a cute little message as well. Something like 약속을 자꾸 못 지키게 돼서 미안해요! ㅠ_ㅠ

haha, thanks
yea, I know I might be overthinking, but it's a hard habit to break and I really do feel bad for the number of times I've had to apologize to her ^^;;
my korean's still beginner stages...I think I only understood about half of that...maybe a little more? haha
what does it mean exactly?

thanks for the reply though ^^

[you used to help at the 'Do You Need Korean Help' thread didn't you? I had to use your posts near the beginning on things like particles to help me out cause I suck with those, hahah]
