i ve noticed that nowadays many young men who are in lower posts especially fresh graduates are wearing cufflinks ... i believe that they are in no position to be having cufflinks as cufflink signifies a person of a high rank and position status and symbol

i think minimum position that should be wearing cufflink are senior managers..

well nowadays these young men who just started their career trying too hard to go up the social ladder to the point of disrespecting higher echelon such as myself

of course i was greatly offended and insulted when I see them wearing cufflink , i would normally give them a warning where i will not give second chance towards them

so i wanted to know if i am the only one who think this way

would really love to hear your people inputs

I thought cufflinks were just fashion statements/trends. I never understood the whole deeper meaning behind cufflinks. There's nothing really wrong with younger men wearing cuff links (or that's what I thought..), there are a lot of cufflinks that are becoming more affordable or are given as gifts. *shrug

I guess it's kind of similar to little middle schooler girls carrying around Louis Vuitton bags? o______o

Or not? ?____?

Um wow, that is really harsh for wearing a cufflink...I understand the OLD social history with them.
But things that were taboo back in the day aren't now. It makes them look more professional if anything, which I thought was good.
Kind of relating to what koneee said, should I give a warning out to my young subordinates because they carry a Balenciaga bag and I've only got a Coach?
No, it's ridiculous, it's a piece of clothing, some men like French cuff shirts anyway and there are plenty inexpensive cufflinks.

I'm not bashing you, you can do what you want in your office, but you have to realize fashion has no social class anymore.

I work at an i-bank and I can understand where you are coming from. It is an extremely conservative workplace and most senior managers view cufflinks as a sign of tenure and experience - sort of like you've 'earned' the right to wear them in the workplace through seniority. Most analysts that wear them (or those blue dress shirts with white collars) are viewed as pretentious. I stick to regular cuff or barrel cuff shirts for now.. I guess most people will have trouble understanding this culture unless they've been there.

its just a fashion statement in my view. Heck, I'm a female that sports the cufflinks and tie every so often. I think it's cute.

Should they be allowed? Sure.

Will they get ragged on like hell? Of course.

There's an entry-level dude in my office who wears french cuffs with diamond pave links all the time. The guy's gotta be like 21, 22ish.. most hilarious thing you'll ever seen, especially when some of the senior managers are going around in polos (summer dress code).

I'm sure it depends on the industry and how conservative it is, though.

You've got to be kidding me... is this thread supposed to be a joke?

I don't understand why anyone would want to wear one in the first place. It's extremely tacky and pretentious looking to me...

I don't know about other countries, but here in the US we have a saying: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Kind of hard to do that if you're not going to allow people of lower rank to wear the trappings of those of higher rank tongue.gif

i had no idea about cufflinks...i recently just bought a set for a friend bc he seems to be in a shirt 365 days a year. i guess he can use them for special occasions. and mystica u sound a bit like a fashion nazi hehe. who really cares wat OTHER ppl wear. i mean, i always wear wat i like, regardless of wat other ppl are gonna think. and in this day and age, some rule not allowing ppl to wear something as harmless as cufflinks wont be well tolerated.

Frankly that sounds really snobby. I guess you'll have to find a less obvious way to find out if someone is worthy of your respect.

I guess I've been working in the field where cuff links don't matter nor do they represent some kind of status so it's kind of hard for me to understand this mentality. (The idea that a certain dress code represents some kind of status feels rather outdated. If the boss feels comfortable with polo shirts when there's no meeting then it's up to him. It's a subordinate feels good wearing cuff links let him be. What matters is their positions and their brains, not what they wear.)
TJP, that I like.

i wear them only because the shirts I bought required them and I didn't realize this when I bought the shirts. considering stores such as Target and Wal-mart sell cufflinks, not sure if the status simple is quite the same here in the States.

I work at an engineering company and everyone is dressed pretty casual. There's just no t-shirts, jeans, and running shoes allowed. And, generally speaking, no one is dressed fully formal except for the CEO, President, and people who have to see clients on a particular day.

So no, wearing cufflinks isn't a symbol of disrespect to the seniors. It just makes you look like a fool.

I think so.. He's kinda hilarious in his snobby ways but all in all don't take this troll too seriously.

All I know is that no one gives a damn about cufflinks in California ... and right-fully so. It's a fashion statement. If you come here, you gotta chill a lot more.
