Fable by Bill Willingham is pretty okay.

Imagine Big Bad Wolf as a detective or Show White divorced from Prince Charming and is your divorce lawyer. It deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as "Fables" – who have been forced out of their Homelands by a mysterious enemy known as the Adversary. They have traveled to New York and formed a secret community known as Fabletown.

The batman series such as Arkham Asylum, The Killing Joke
Children are all foreigners- Ralph Waldo Emerson

^i agree, fables is really good.

looks like your boyfriend is more into non-mainstream stuff. but yeah, you can try other alan moore works like v for vendetta, from hell, swamp thing, league of extraordinary gentlemen. the killing joke is a batman comic that moore also wrote and it's really good. top 10 is amazing, it's got great art by gene ha, and it's very recent so i definitely recommend it (the cover art is by alex ross and hence gorgeous).

speaking of alex ross, i highly highly recommend kingdom come by mark waid and marvels by kurt busiek. they're set in the dc universe and marvel universe respectively, but both can work as a standalone.

other comic books i would recommend include runaways (i LOVE runaways) by brian k vaughan (2nd run by joss whedon). again, it's marvel but doesn't tie into the main continuity a whole lot. y: the last man, also by bkv, is really good, too. kick-ass by mark millar is another favorite of mine.

others i haven't read but have been told to: transmetropolitan by warren ellis gets a lot of critical acclaim and i hear it's really good. same thing with preacher by garth ennis. scott pilgrim's precious little life. 100 bullets by brian azzarello. powers by bendis. bone, maus, and aardvark are all good, but not as superhero-esque.

if you want more mainstream-related stuff, there's the classic batman: year one and the dark knight returns, both by frank miller. i also really like batman: hush by jeph loeb and jim lee as well as batman: the long halloween by jeph loeb and tim sale. for marvel, spider-man: blue and daredevil: yellow, both by the winning combo jeph loeb and tim sale, are really good. also, you CANNOT go wrong with joss whedon's run on astonishing x-men. it's rare that an x-men arc gets such universal adoration from fans.

also, try the sandman spinoffs like endless nights, death: the high cost of living and death: time of your life, all by gaiman. gaiman also wrote the one-off series marvel 1602, which is an alternate universe type of deal with marvel superheroes. pretty good. also, recently (like it was released last month) gaiman wrote a 'final' batman arc called whatever happened to the caped crusader. i really really wanna read it but haven't had time yet. the title is a reference to the 'final' superman arc that alan moore wrote called whatever happened to the man of tomorrow. more options right there.

that is a long list, i know. but if i were you, i would pick a title that combines the comic books and writers your boyfriend likes. i'd say the killing joke and whatever happened to the caped crusader are very good candidates.
