uhh is it better to buy XP or vista? im just looking for a notebook to do research with and to type papers with.. i dont care about video games.. maybe watching korean dramas.. dats bout it.. lawl should i get a cheap one with 3 year warranty or is warranty necessary if im only gonna use it for softcore activities?

you can use either for that. just get Vista as you'll have more notebook options as very few places still offer XP. warranty is important for hardware issues not software.

I need to buy a laptop for studying abroad and someone I know is willing to sell me a Toshiba P200-13F.
To me it seems decent and not expensive, plus I'll get all the programs I need from this guy, but I heard friends say Toshiba is no garanty for long-lasting quality, meaning they work fine for 6 months but after that they stop working good. Can anyone please confirm or this or not?

I know it's probably older than what you guys have but in here it's still not that old and the newer ones are still pretty expensive here.

Toshibas arent the best in quality but it is unfair to generalize that all Toshibas will fail within 6 months.

so where are you from and how much are you willing to pay for this?

I'm from Blegium, since I'm paying for it myself I'd rather spent a max 1050 euro, since 900 has become the normal prize recently. I was also doubting about buying a macbook since I have my students discount but I'd rather have over or at least 120 GB since I'm probabaly gonna put loads on it. The friend who suggested this one said it wasn't old (the toshiba) but also not teh newest, I don'' know much about those things...

can anyone suggest good laptops for an incoming freshman student? well i'll basically be using it for school works and for my own entertainment which includes watching movies/dramas online as well as downloading and listening to music. just the basic stuff.

recently i've been looking at hp laptops eitheir the: HP Pavilion dv9500t series, HP Pavilion dv9000z series, or HP Pavilion dv6500t series.
other than these hp notebooks are there any other hp reccommendations?

also ive also seen that new commercial for dell with their new laptops that comes in different colors. anyone knows if those are any good?

out of the these three brands which would you choose: sony(viao), HP pavillion, or DELL???

for HP you probably want to stick to something that has 500 in it because those are the most recent ones. 9000z is old.Between HP and Dell, the HP pavillions are significantly thinner, but you have less options on customization (lid, internal, etc) than Dell offers. Dell will also be cheaper due to the availability of coupons and student discounts.I'd opt for the dell because their models now incorporate better build material, etc (but they are thicker).. there have been some complaints about their 1520 series (their 15.4" laptop). you need to decide what screen size you want because based on what you want to do, any monkey laptop can do that, its nothing special.

at 900, you can afford a brand new Dell Inspiron with good specs inside, and that's BEFORE haggling with the operator in order to get the price down, or any student discounts. If you can prove you're a student you save more.http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products...;l=nl&s=dhsend of story. don't go for the Toshiba, its old. The Macbook is also old and is going to be replaced in a few months.

hm, i need a computer for school..
uses would mainly be just school work, word documents, research..and some of my personal uses such as music and movies and stuff..but nothing too fancy..maybe a bit of gaming, but im not too hard on that so

i was thinking about the macbook pro, considering that its supposed to be mroe user friendly, especially with media programs like pictures and movies?

and also, if i bought the macbook pro, since macs are compatible with both mac and windows operating systems, would it be as simple as inserting my Windows CD into the laptop and installing it on there? or would it require complicated steps that i should go find professional help for?

i really like the macbook pros, becaues macs seem to be less prone to viruses because supposedly no one creates viruses for macs haha, and the camera..and if i could successfully install the windows operating system on it, it would seem like a perfect computer for me, since ive used windows my entire life and i could also occasionally benefit from the mac os.

but otherwise, if it would be complicated to install windows onto a mac, i could deal with just buying any other laptop with vista on it..

any help? or any other concerns about the macbook pros? and if so, can anyone recommend me any other good laptops?
i think id be fine with spending up to 2000 on the laptop..
Too lazy to make another sig. Ill get to it..maybe.

any laptop can do what you want, its nothing special.. only the gaming part may require a good video card.. depending on what game you want to play.

2000 budget? well thats what you'll need because macbook pros are around 1999. However there's a $200 discount if you're a university student, you just need to prove it.

there may be less viruses on a mac, but there certainly still are mac viruses, and most importantly, may pro-Mac people may suggest that Macs have less problems than Windows, but the reality is, Macs actually have different set of problems unique to them, rather than having less problems.

Installing windows would require you to buy another software called Bootcamp or Parallels in order to run it. thats another $50 or so right there.

If you're willing to spend that much, then you'll be getting the lightest 15.4" available in the US with a profile of a 14" laptop, a decent video card (Nvidia 8600GT) and an LED screen (although there are complaints that it has yellow tinting problems on the bottom).

theres plenty of other alternatives at your budget. IBM/ Lenovo T61, T61p, the upcoming Asus V1s, or if you want cheaper, a Dell 1520 or Vostro 1500 which would probably be half the price of the MBP but at the same performance and specs (just alot fatter and no LED).

no
boot camp is just a program that allows you to use windows, you still need the cd. boot camp is not windows.

don't know, I never tried it myself, try asking in the Mac thread in this section. I think it should be easy though.

Installing an OS is quite an easy process. You should have no problems.

think it's apples to oranges...hehe. mines is a business notebook, and your's is a media/gaming notebook

in place of the nice graphics card, great screen and large hard drive, i have security features like fingerprint / security chip / smart card readers... and i have infrared and firewire ports as well as bluetooth connectivity for quick data transfer. the casing is made of magnesium alloy and the hard drive has a shock protection mechanism. it's built pretty sturdy, so i can take it around without worrying about bumps along the way. the keyboard's also spill resistant, though i'd rather not test it out when i get mine... haha, and it has a track point (the little stick in the middle of the keyboard to use like a mouse).

i wont be playin SC2 or watching HD quality movies on this machine, but i can get some serious work done on the go, and connect to a wide variety of devices i have on hand. no need to worry about people getting into my machine or about bumping into things while im off and about.

fits my needs pretty well i think =)
