I'm not sure if this is suppose to go in this thread, but I recently bought a sony vaio FZ-190, and when I first got it, it was silent and very fast. Now, 2 weeks later, the hard drive is ridiculously loud, I can hear it over the loud music I'm blasting, you can hear it processing, and it didn't used to sound like that, and everything is really slow, when I click on the shortcut for mozilla, it takes forever for the window to open up, is this normal?? Or is something wrong with my hard drive? It used to pop up right after I clicked it. I've checked for spyware and virus and found none. sad.gif

no not really, you're basically describing any laptop, and what is "nice" can be totally subjective.

I was wondering how much of a student discount do people usually get from dell? 'cus I was on the phone earlier with a representative and the guy seemed to dodge the question, imo. He built me an XPS m1330 system that's around 1.6k and managed to lower it down to 1.5k, so around 50-100$ difference. I was like.. ughh, I need to think more about this and he gave me his email and said that the quoted price is only available for 48hrs. >.< Anybody here with tips on how to haggle with a dell representative? LOL. I'd rather go buy the nice looking mac book with a 200$ discount with little hassle than to buy an overpriced notebook from some shady guy. >.<On a side note, is there any other notebook besides dell xps m1330 that has LED screen or something similar to LED that saves battery? And between the Sony Vaio SZ and the FZ, which one is better? Budget:1.5k I'm willing to compromise with any screen size as long as the weight is no more than 5.5lbs. Fall semester starts in 2 more weeks and i'm desperate!
Dell sometimes can be hard to negotiate with.. if the guy is unwilling to lower it anymore, just hang up and try a different operator. some people got it down to as much as $500.LED backlit screens, off the top of my head:Apple: MBPSony: Vaio SZ (Premium model only), FZ (video card model only), TZ, TXAsus: U seriesDell: XPS M1330thats about it. the FZ is ALOT bigger than the SZ.. trust me on that one. the FZ has a better video card and keyboard..but its simply alot more bigger and heavier and you'll be pushing the 5.5lbs, especially if you add in the power, a mouse, etc.

you'll get it before.

for me, I ordered a Dell Vostro 1400.
ordered 7/18. dell estimated delivery 8/8. received 7/31.

OMG, I ordered like the 13th and it still hasn't come yet! God I hate dell and their crappy customer service.

really? how odd. This is my third day with it.to sum it up:pros:great build, no flex anywheresturdy lidgreat keyboardnot as fat as I thought it'd be.great selection of USB portsnot too hotwith 9 cell, I get 5 hours of battery life. not bad for something with a vid card.almost no bloatwaregood dealcons: all screen related.limited vertical viewing anglesgrainy screenI wish they had an XP optionhad the screen been decent, it woulda been a perfect notebook. I've been spoiled by the FZ's screen.. I'm going to see if I can land a good deal on the XPS M1330.

its the best and strongest tablet you can get. if you think that'll break easily then wait till you try the other brands, they are worse.

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

thats the link to the nvidia graphics drivers download. since my card is 8600GT then it would be the geforce 8 series correct? and for the option on right hand side would it be right if i select windows vista 32bit? my display settings show 32 bit as highest, 16 lowest.. no 64. i just want to make sure i download the correct one tongue.gif
but what does this driver do? enhance some sort of performance?

yeah, vista 32 bit. there's almost no place that ships vista with the 64 bit version because there's still some issues with it and notebooks.

I dunno about the 8600mGT, but I know the 8400 GS got a major boost in performance with the newest drivers.

each brand has high end and low end models that are built differently. its unfair to generalize an entire brand based on one model, but some people just want easy answers.

Fujitsu's tend to be very expensive for what you get.. the N series are built pretty well but the A series are budget models with very flexy keyboards and palm rests.

Toshiba's Tecra line is the higher end one and their Sattelite is their consumer one.. most of the Sattelites Iv'e used are pretty average.

I'm planning to get the VAIO CR

Was wondering if anyone owns it already
What the main pros/cons are

And also if I should hit myself with a pan for wanting to buy it.
Any input would be great.

I'm just looking for a laptop that's
  • light 5-7 lbs
  • cant be over $1500
  • durable
  • good processor
  • hardrive doesn't really matter since i have an external hardrive
  • wireless would be nice

simple stuff like that. sweatingbullets.gif

CR is "pretty" but its pretty chunky for a 13.3" laptop. the Sony SZ or the Dell XPS M1330 will be lighter and thinner. but they can be pricey. to get it under $1500, you'll have to cut down on some features.

I don't have much money to spend on a notebook (less than $800)

The computers Dell are advertising seem pretty attractive for the price, so i'm tempted to buy one. I couldn't find any reviews for their computers, so i was wondering if anyone knows if this model is reliable/"good"?

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/con...;s=dhs&sm=2

thanks!

the new dells are built MUCH better than their last generation. Dare I say it, but my current Vostro 1400 feels much more solid than my Asus W7j.
as for the 15.4" versions, I haven't heard too much complaints on the build. but I heard some people don't like the screen as some of them can look a bit grainy. I admit this vostro 1400 screen is also sorta grainy. for some its not a bother because its so miniscule and insignificant. also keep in mind you're getting an $800 laptop.

my Vostro 1400 was $800 with overnight shipping, should be cheaper. I used the link Tungywungy posted a few pages back. If you live on continental US, you can get it for less since I live farther and had to choose the most expensive shipping.

you need a new screen. contact your dealer to see how much it'll cost.
