any gateway or HP tablet will probably be the cheapest ones. unless you tried to seek out an older Lenovo X60 series tablet. I'd probably go with the HP one, its 12" but in general, tablets can be expensive

its okay but I'm sure theres better.
what I had. vostro 1400 (same as Inspiron 1420)
1.6ghz, home basic, wxga+ rez (not wxga), nvidia 8400gs, 120gb HD, dvd burner (not a combo drive), wireless N, webcam, bluetooth, 9 cell. $700. I think that was a better deal than what you got. I could've dropped the nvidia card for a bigger HD like you did and it'll still be cheaper. I strongly suggest you haggle with the operator, use the education discounts and coupons (comes out either every wedneday or thursday night, check notebookreview deals section for the coupons).

yea i knew i should've just gotten something earlier and maybe cancelled if a better deal came around, but i was so unsure of what model to get, which was the best deal etc. now that ive figured out what i want, all the good deals are gone
i have a question about laptop security... as a college student, would it be worth an extra $100-$400 for a longer warranty, accidental damage and lojack theft protection? it just seems like a ton of money for only 1-2 years.

any computer can write papers and store music and pics. if you don't play games or do autocad, then you dont need a video card.

I'm planning on buying this laptop
Toshiba Satellite Notebook with Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2080 - Mist Gray
Model: A135-S4527.
I've been checking on the reviews about this
laptop and most of 'em are positive.
I would just like to make sure if I am making
a right decision on buying this product.
Will anyone please help me tell
the cons n pro's w/ this laptop?
And I would appreciate it if you own a laptop
just like this one and tell me about your
experience with it.
Thank you!

I'm looking for the same thing, except with T7100, 2GB and 9 cell. I've seen a few comments about haggling with the dell operators, but can you give us a summarized list of things to say, times to call, etc. The dell flyer I saw recently said they are having "back to school specials" that last till august 16. $939 cut down to $799 for the inspiron 1420's. Do you think there will be more of a price reduction before September? I've also got the same problem of having to move to campus, so I have to anticipate the delivery time. I've tried configuring the same specs on the vostro 14 inch series, and it came out to be a bit cheaper. I didn't really analyze all the minor details like warranty's and software support. But simply comparing inspiron and vostro, what are the technical differences. (I just know vostros are black and targeted towards business users).

I think instead, you should go for something newer. check out Tungy's post above.
just fyi
core duo, core 2 duo (merom), core 2 duo (santa rosa, aka centrino pro) which is current.
that system is 2 gen behind.

im not sure if you meant for me to comment or for ppl who are more technically inclined haha, but i'll share some of my insight anyway. i actually still havent ordered my laptop yet.. im adamant on getting a good price on it (by good, i mean less than $950, ideally lol) and after adding all the features i want, it comes up to be more than that. im no expert, but you should keep in mind that the $799 is for the basic package-- extra features = more moolah. ive heard that the vostro is pretty much the same as the inspiron except, like you said, geared towards ppl who use them more for work than entertainment reasons, thus the less attractive looks. if you really dont care about aesthetics, ppl have said the vostro is a good deal-- ive also heard from reading reviews that the battery life is way better on a vostro.
try messing around with the specs on the dell website. ive found that the prices come out very differently depending on what kind of discount you have. i have certain discounts from my college but ive found ones online that have given me a greater discount than the one from my college. it's helpful if you configure ur specs on the website before calling dell, so you can be sure they're not trying to rip you off. i recommend going to notebookreview.com.. i came by it searching on google and it has been extremely helpful in my search for a good laptop, getting a good deal etc. there are more tips on haggling with the dell operators around the forum too.

but there are key differences:
- Vostros are all black
- Vostros are handled by a different department of Dell and have different type of warranties and service. (they also carry no restocking fees if you decide to return it).
thats it.

I figured for the 40 GB increase on HD to cost $60, I might as well get $70 320 GB, 7200 rpm external HD from NCIX. Is it worth $40 to upgrade XGA to XGA+? As far as I know, it just has a higher resolution (1400x900 or somethin like that)
On notebookreview.com, there's a section with dell coupons. I tried out a configuration on dell's Canadian site, and tried to apply the coupon but it didn't work. (The coupon is the $325 off for a config thats $1299+ on any inspiron) and YES, I tried applying this to an inspiron notebook, not on the Vostro I listed above. Do those dell coupons only apply to US models? Anybody know of e-value coupons for the Canadian dell? What with all this talk about "dell-ays" I need to order really soon...probably tonight. Somebody please give me advice for haggling with the operator.
