I just purchased a HP dv6810us laptop at Fry's today and I'm debating whether or not to keep it..Right now, I'm leaning towards the customizable HP dv6700z but I really can't make up my mind. The dv6810us was about $850 in total, with insurance and a free printer while the dv6700z would be about $900 in total and also with a free printer. Opinions please?

QUOTE (fiveplusohplusone @ May 26 2008, 04:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
hey i'm back... :x
thanks for your help from weeks ago~~
so i shrunk my list to either pavillion, aspire, dell (the fall line up for 07 and mid 08 like you said) and sony vaio. my dad works for the ibm company, so it's easy for us to get discounted laptops which was what i was looking for...low priced notebooks but good quality...but... the company offers used but certified laptops which are older models. he said levono and ibm work side by side (or however you say it tongue.gif) but i dont know if levono is okay for me.
all i want is a laptop that is good quality (just something for a college student to use) and doesnt have unsatisfactory qualities. i've heard so many complaints about dell and some other laptops. i know that there are some good ones even out of the brands that people complain about. problem is, i don't know which ones they are. i'm on a really tight tight tight budget so if the return policy is cruddy and i'm stuck with an awful laptop, i wont have money to buy another one.

The thinkpad line from Lenovo/IBM is unbeatable in terms of build quality. its simply the best. the screen is a bit on the duller side though and some many find that it doesn't offer enough ports (which is only a problem if you need those specific ports, like HDMI, E-Sata, etc). If you can get a discount for the thinkpads and you're not picky over the screen, then by all means go for the Thinkpad.

Dell has a long history of making laptops, and over the past 3 years.. they have made MANY models and redesigns.. so some people who don't keep up with notebook technology, may be left with obsolete impressions that are not applicable to models today. Dell has certainly improved over all and are still a good value (before they were a good value with really unimpressive notebooks). The new ones that will come out from Dell will be interesting. Around the first few days of June, there will be a big electronics show in Taiwan (Computex) where we will see all the new laptops for this year unveiled!

Dell and Sony (if u order from them) have very lenient return policies. Lenovo on the other hand doesn't.

how about go for neither, save money, wait a few more months (august max) for the new notebook models.
in addition, Turion is very outdated by now.

Wouldn't newer models equate to more money?

no because the new models will have to replace the older models that were sold in whatever price range.
besides, since you're already spending hundreds.. why spend it on a laptop using a processor that was released over 2 years ago, and a company that left the laptop processor business for a year because of numerous failures, and then soon releasing a new chip. You're paying alot for something outdated, and obviously, best buy and other resellers are trying to get rid of it by throwing in free printers, etc to make it move faster.

for the same price you can probably find a Dell Inspiron or Vostro, or an HP with a newer Intel Core 2 Duo chip.

are you using any coupons? some how i think you can get it for a little cheaper? maybe around August, you will see the M1330 being updated. so if u wait until then you can get the newer model (or get the current model for cheaper as they will probably try to get rid of it).

Sony has already released details of their new notebooks and the CR series will probably stop being produced. you sure you want to get something that Sony is going to replace very soon?

My BF and I are interested in getting me the new MSI Wind that's coming out in June.

For the Linux version, it's around $400... For the Windows version, which I want to get, it's about $500-$600..

Do you guys think it's a good buy?

Especially for school, since I'm gonna need it the most for fall. ^^

check notebookreview's forums. they constantly update the coupons.
also Dell's refurbs aren't bad either. they are literally brand new (maybe have a scratch or two) and really cheap.

dunno if its a good buy yet but by Fall, you'll have
MSI wind
Asus EEPC
an Acer mini notebook
and a Dell mini inspiron

there's probably going to be at least 6 of these mini budget notebooks so lets see how it goes.
Personally I wouldn't pay more than $400 for these. Originally they were supposed to be $199 but the price kept going up.
after a certain point, one wonders if its better to just get a bigger but much more powerful budget notebook.

AR is a nice multimedia model. But are you sure you want a 17" laptop? many people will find it too big. This laptop is meant to stay at home and act as a media center. I also think this is one of the models that will be replaced next month or july (Sony is going to replace almost all their current models). Also, the AR is quite expensive for what it offers.. although its pretty sleek for a 17" laptop I admit.

they are both the same generation, the HP (on specs at least) seems to be better. and its also smaller and lighter if you prioritize those things. But this summer they will be obsolete when Toshiba and HP ring out the new models. seems to be a common theme I keep telling people lately.

recommendation depends on how much money you're willing to spend. I can tell you some good models but they can be pricey.
I can't predict sales, but laptops always get cheaper as time passes by, and sales usually happen at either back to school, christmas, or when a laptop reaches the end of its life cycle (at which point you may want to consider getting something thats cheap but will be obsolete, or something new).

tax is an issue if you choose to buy laptops only from stores.. many people prefer online vendors as you can avoid sales tax in some situations (a considerable amount of money saved).

laptops under $1000 tend to be budget models and you won't get the top quality stuff there. You are pretty much forced to look at HP Pavilion models, Dell Inspirons, Gateway, Toshiba Sattelites, or low end Sony Vaios. Of these the newer Dell Inspirons have took a big step up in the quality compared to their rivals (HP took a step towards making nicer looking laptops but they are still rather average, Gateway also took a step towards making their laptops better looking but are still average, while Toshiba Sattelite were never that great period). The Dell Inspiron and earlier Vostro models are probably the better bet but they're not too good looking, but the construction isn't all plastic like its counterparts. More importantly, Dell (especially in the Vostro) gives the user more ability to avoid bloatware being installed on the computer.. something all the others do quite alot of.. especially Sony. Some people are smart and remove them or just do a reformat to get the computer "clean".. however those who can't are stuck with a computer that is laggy and under performing due to these unnecessary programs

And it's always this way.
