well.. the next generation of laptops have better connectivity to the internet.. which I guess is if incase you have an urge to download while being in the middle of nowhere.
ohh so all i need is a big hard drive ? uhh.. what about a bigger RAM ? will it be better if thats bigger too ? and how many gigabytes do you think will i need ?

I feel anything 14" and under will be nice to carry to class. I carry a 13.3" laptop myself. If you can wait till mid-late summer, there will be new notebooks. if you need one urgently.. the Sony SZ, Asus W7, Dell XPS M1330, and Macbook are nice for the 13.3" size range. 12" models, the Lenovo X series is probably the best, one of the lightest and sturdiest (but looks very boring and has an average screen).
if you already have another computer to do most of your stuff.. you might want to try those new "Netbooks", like the Asus EEE PC, MSI Wind, and a bunch of new models coming out that dont have names yet. they're super light, small, and cheap. but they're not powerful and good for mostly surfing the net and typing stuff.. which is why its only for those people who already have some other kind of computer
Ram is not so important for downloading unless you run a bunch of other programs at the same time. But its important for your operating system, and with Vista, you need at least 2 gb.

its true, new macs come out late summer, early fall. if you can wait that long, then wait. If not then don't feel too much buyers regret.. you're getting a free ipod.. and quite frankly.. anyone using a regular Macbook probably doesn't do anything really demanding that would require something much better. The macbook's chassis is probably in its mid age (I believe its going to be the 3rd version?).. so I think the next Macbook will still use the same body, just with a new processor. but i think they MIGHT give this new one an LED backlit screen.. which are very nice..
if your going for the macbook pro... then i think the maij change will be a newer processor, and a new video card. but the pros already include LED backlit screens since last year

well first you should post in troubleshooting section. next, while I think HP's aren't great.. some of these problems could simply be software related. Have you tried reformatting and using HP's restore option? you may also need more RAM if it doesnt run too well.
as far as Macbooks go.. go for Macbooks if you like the Mac operating system. its as simple as that.
many people have opinions over the apple thing because they're either Apple fanboys, or the other extreme, apple haters.
I don't really have any opinions other than that they simply use a different operating system and that the designs are quite nice.
As for the Macbook laptop itself.. I really like its simple form factor, its screen, and keyboard. Its also built quite well for something thats all plastic. Its actually really heavy for a 13.3" laptop, yet thin too. I don't really like some of its port selection though, or that while its really simple.. its really difficult to take it apart and add/fix things yourself (other laptops generally give users access to the Hard drive, RAM, etc easily)

right-o. so it's time for me to get a new notebook. i have a dell right now, and it's fine I'm not too crazy about it. i use it for entertainment (lots of movie watching), the usual school work (papers, papers and papers) and the internet. my dad is all about the pc and since coming to school (esp. the one im at) ive become more interested in macs.
seeing as how this is going to be the last notebook my dad is going to provide me with, i want it to be something that is reliable, relatively light (i travel cross country at least 3x a year and i take my notebook with me and i take it to class as well....or i try), and preferably $1500 or cheaper ive become comfortable with the mac operating system, so that isn't a big deal for me. the big winning point for me is that it seems the graphic programs, esp for photos, seem a lot easier to use which i like because i have a lot of pictures. plus, my schools computer store has some sweet deals for mac notebooks.
......so any suggestions

well if you can wait till mid or end of summer, the new notebooks will be out. anyways you probably want something 14.1" or under. check out my 13.3" suggestion I made to some one else earlier.
vista is more resource consuming than xp

the 1420 is not a new model, it was released last summer. The Vostro 1400 is the same laptop, just painted all black, renamed and aimed at different consumers (i owned the 1400 for a few weeks).
It will be replaced by the Dell Studio Inspiron 1435

slow is something that depends on the specifications and software, not the name of the brand.
Dell has improved quite a bit in these last 2-3 years, and is still one of the best values in terms of performance/price.
the question is when do you need it by and how much you want to spend. like I said a million times. next month is when we'll see new notebooks
they're both good and are similar in many ways, depending on how you configure it. BUT right now (you better hurry) there's a VERY good XPS M1530 deal going on. check notebookreview's deal section for more.

well, some places don't charge tax so keep that in mind. but your budget does limit you to pretty much lower end Dells, HP and Vaio. But as far as lower end goes, Dell gives you more bang for the buck. If you already have a main computer, perhaps you should consider a netbook instead

1) Sony VAIO VGN-FZ445DB ($899.99 CAD) - 15.4"
I love the slimness of it, but might be too big to be carried everywhere around campus. It doesn't have a designated video card, and is only middle-range in terms of speed. It's my favourite in terms of looks though!
2) ASUS F8P-C1B ($1100 CAD) - 14.1"
I'm somewhat leaning towards this one because it is cheaper than most other ones, and will do for my needs. However, specs are around average.
3) ASUS F8SN-B1 ($1175 CAD) - 14.1"
In terms of specs, this one should be the best - fast, video card for movies/games, space. A bit pricier than what I had intended to spend, seeing that I don't need a great one for school.
4) ASUS U3S-A1W ($1200 CAD) - 13.3"
Apparently the price I can get this one for is really good. The only thing it lacks might be the CD-Rom.. so I need an external one. It's nice and light, but not sure if I want the hassle of having to carry an external CD-Rom.
Correct me if I'm wrong on these!
