Compaq Presario C771US 15.4" Widescreen Notebook Computer With Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2390
at Office Depot for $409 with $30 rebate = $379.99

How's this laptop? Fast?
I just need a laptop for my daily essentials (surfing the internet, watching videos(kdramas+anime+youtube), writing essays/reports) for a relatively cheap price.

sweatingbullets.gif

well what can you expect from a laptop that costs under $400? it won't be the best.
but it'll do all those that you mention because quite frankly, any laptop can do it. It doesn't need a "fast" processor

I dunno about that.. Best Buy sometimes carries Lenovo, but its usually a thinkpad line or a larger ideapad.
you might have to buy from Lenovo directly. Try to go to notebookreview.com
and browse around the Lenovo section, you'll probably find some kind of discount being mentioned from time to time.

Thanks for your great help. My friend badly wants to get it now.

In terms of battery life and storage space, is Dell or HP better?

I want a laptop to just basically do my school work and store videos/music.

Dell and HP make dozens of different models, and they all have different battery life.
Storage space is not based on brand. Dell and HP buy whatever hard drive and stick it in their notebooks and if you're buying from them directly,
you can change the size of the hard drive. You can also change it yourself.

Hi! I just wanted to know if any of you think the HP Pavilion dv5t series is a good laptop to have. I just got it as an early Christmas present to use for school and I don't know much about it. I did think the remote control and fingerprint feature was cool though :]

And can someone tell me the difference between the dv5t and dv5z series?

while the DV5 series may not be the best built (its still a Pavilion after all).. in many ways its probably has the best price to performance ratio out of any 15.4" laptop. For people interested in gaming, one could get a decently spec'd DV5t with an Nvidia 9600 for less than $1000! In terms for specs only, it can offer the same as the Macbook Pro for hundreds less. (this is specs only, the MBP offers other things that probably justify its higher cost like its significantly thinner form factor, better build, etc). I think what I like about the DV5 series the best is that it has an awesome selection of ports! HDMI, E-SATA, 3 USB ports, and more.. its far better than what Dell and many other rival brands offer in a similar size category!

the T uses an Intel chip and has better options for video cards. the Z uses an AMD chip and is cheaper.

the first page is a bit outdated.

the current chip now is Intel Core 2 Duo.. in those exact words (with the chip number itself starting with the letter P not T).. any switch around means its not. Intel has some awful and confusing naming schemes unfortunately.

Thank you. So basically it's an Intel Centrino? Not a Intel Core 2 Duo? This is exactly what it said was included in the laptop.

What's Included

* Toshiba Satellite Laptop with Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology

Product Features

* Intel® Centrino® processor technology with Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor T5800
Intel® GL40 chipset, Intel® Wireless Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN network connection (802.11a/b/g/n) and extended battery life.
* The next-generation Intel® Core™2 Duo processor
Based on the innovative Intel® Core™ microarchitecture, so it runs faster and is more energy-efficient for cooler, quieter operation.

basically, it is a generation (or half a generation) old. The Txxxx is replaced by Pxxxx. However manufacturers still sell the T models because its cheaper and in all honesty, most people can't tell the difference.

student discount is always there. But lately we see things like "free ipod or ipod touch" around the time before school starts.

The W5f above is a slightly older model, there already is a W5f refresh that has the core 2 duo. In addition, Asus Ensembles are usually at a set spec while the Sony C can be configured at SonyStyle.com. If you go for the W5, I believe btotech.com is the cheapest, and there might be a rebate coming out for the W5f after Dec.10. the Sony C is a nice machine, but its considerably thicker and heavier (its supposed to be Sony's lower end option for those who cant afford the SZ).. the keyboard, like most Sony keyboards, is something you have to test yourself at a store.. its quite different. some like it, others hate it. Both laptops will come with bloatware that will slowdown your computer, requiring you to remove some of them (the worst bloat is usually Norton's trial crap). However as far as ultraportable goes, the IBM X60 is considered the best by most professionals.. its what most of the admins and several mods at our other forum prefer, due to its lightness, sturdy build and great keyboard. of course some may be turned off by its standard ratio matte screen and lack of internal optical drive.

all of the above models are no longer in production.. for a while now.

Hey guys, I kinda need help choosing.
I'm picking between a HP laptop and a toshiba laptop.
just generally speaking, which brand would be more reliable?

here are the specs listed in the catalogue.

HP pavilion 15" :
-AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core RM-70 2.0GHz CPU
-2GB RAM-250GB HDD
-DVDRW with lightscribe
-Intel 802.11 a/b/g/n
-ATI Radeon 256MB Dedicated graphics
-Vista Premium

Toshiba Satellite 15" :
-Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 2.0GHz CPU
-2GB RAM
-250GB HDD
-DVD Super Multi (dual layer)
-Wireless 802.11 a/g/n
-Webcam
-ATI Radeon 256MB Dedicated graphics
-Vista Home Premium.

Ok, honestly, I don't have a clue as to what I just typed. It seems like jibberish to me. lol
I'd be using it mainly for school work. I don't game and stuff .. and yeah!
Any advice would be appreciated biggrin.gif

Preferably nothing over $2000 (AUD)
The HP was around $1500 and the Toshiba $1400
There was another toshiba at the store but wasn't mentioned in the catalogue and it was $1700. It had a bigger screen though. ._.

I'm not too sure on prices on AUD, nor your the models you listed (they are quite vague.. HP 15"? there's many HP 15" models, what exact model is it).. etc

but your needs don't sound extreme and either will do in all honesty. If you can get more accurate specs (like type of video card, exact model number, etc) I can tell you which one will be better for your money.

You dont need something that good/expensive for just schoolwork >.<" you can easily get the same laptop with better specs alot cheaper,.
dedicated graphics cards are pretty much for gamers, if you dont you should just get one with an integrated video card

I'm completely new to all of this...considering choosing a laptop was never a big deal since my parents always choose it. But now that I'm in college, they're asking me to choose my laptop and to choose it wisely b/c it's going to be a while before I get a new one.

So here's my question...what laptop is the most efficient I suppose for a college student to use? my friends...who I'm sure have just about the same level of knowledge on this stuff...keep telling me to get the vaio or the macbook, but they can't really provide me with a real reason why it's better than all the other ones! lol. My only request is that the laptop be light enough to carry around and to be under $1000! Please help! :]

you won't get no macbook for under $1000 unless you settle for the older "white" model.
your needs are quite vague, there's plenty of "light" laptops. What else do you plan on doing with it?

keep in mind that if all you do is "office type applications, net browsing, amateur photoshopping, watching videos and downloading stuff" nearly all laptops can do that.
