anyone used asus laptop before? how are the quality of the notebooks?

I think you need to stop making generalizations about one brand and read the faq first

its getting a bit old which is why its "cheap" (should be refreshed around this year), but not that cheap for what you're getting. you may want to consider a 13" model which will be even lighter.

Hello! thx for the info, I read all of it and I'm down to 2 and I just need some help happy.gif

I'm a [female] college student. Just need a nice light-weight laptop that I can carry around. NO heavy gaming. Just need it for school, internet, DL music/videos, and mirosoft haha. I'm on a budget so haha I can spend up to $1,200 but thats alot ph34r.gif
I'm thinking about either a Macbook or Macbook Pro and the Dell inspiron. The apple is very sleek looking & nice but quite expensive and the Dell looks a little bulky..so im not sure. I'm not sure if i need the 2gb or the 4gb sweatingbullets.gif

Apple:

the Apple will be significantly lighter than the Dell, and probably better battery life. If you need to be mobile the apple will be better. On the other hand, for Dell you may want to reconsider their smaller models like the 14z, inspiron 13, etc. Between the Macbook and macbook pro (13") the macbook pro will certainly be much sturdier because of its unibody aluminum chassis. If it makes you feel better, the price of the macbook pro also went down by $100 compared to a month ago.
2gb will be enough to run Vista and Windows 7. Since your needs are basic, either of them will do what you need.
For me, the only reason I would consider a large notebook is either for the higher resolution screen it usually offers, or the better video card it offers.. I wouldn't consider a 15" or higher if it didn't have either of those, but that's just me smile.gif

I would say wait a little bit longer to see what HP will release in late summer. early summer to early fall is usually the time most notebook manufacturers release new models. HP is right about due for some new ones.

Hi there!

I want to buy a mini notebook, but do not know which one because there's so many to choose from @.@
The price range should be at around 550$

I've read a lot of reviews and found the top ones:

Hewlett-Packard 2133 Mini-Note
Asus EEE 1000HE
Asus EEE 1008H
Samsung N120

There are so many to choose from, and I want it to be light and the batteries should hold for awhile (more than 4-5 hours, the screen shouldn't be too small, I'm going to use for keeping pictures, writing on blogs, watchin youtube, etc. I'm mostly going to use it when I'm travelling to South Korea, England... and I'm also looking a lot at the design. I was thinking, can you design your own mini notebook (like Apple) with different colour, or custom design etc? If it's the case I want the mini notebook to have Windows 7 (Do you now whether they're going to have it?)
Some others I've been looking at:

Dell Mini 10
HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam

Are there some you can recommend?

they are called "netbooks" and there's a dedicated netbook thread in the forums.
most of these have the same specs and same screen sizes. There are no apple netbooks and no apple notebooks can be designed with different colors. No netbooks are offered with windows 7 right now because its not officially out yet, it'll probably be october when it rolls out and there's no guarantee they will all switch to 7, especially since the licenses fee for XP is significantly cheaper, preventing manufacturers from making an outright switch.

simple, the T9800 is better, and the XPS 16 is better. and naturally you'll be paying more money for them. But if you can afford it then that should be no problem.

that's because most viruses target windows operating systems simply because there's far more computers using windows than mac. It doesn't mean that macs are totally immune to viruses either as those designed to attack macs do exist, and are rising. Either way, all it takes is a good anti-virus software and common sense when browsing, and you'll be safe on either systems.

Apple recently got it's new macbook lineup out (with improved battery life! and a free itouch if you're a student promo) so if you wanna go Apple it's now or never! tongue.gif And I don't think apple macbooks should braek more often than any other laptop brand if not they should break less.

---

To Godotology: I'm probably gonna end up buying a 15"MBP but I jst want closure on this. The lower sata interface on the new MBs is it a big deal or the computer nerds panicking for nothing. I'm planning on using this for some graphic design so I'm wondering if this will hinder it's performance in some way. Also, wut about that new chip that's gonna come out soon? the allendale (sic)? Is it gonna be super insane great? as in worth the wait?
Cuz seriously with the promo goin on at apple and the "new" mbp I'm like 90% leaning towards buying one before the promo ends therefore before the new chip gets implemented in the macbook line. AND... when is snow leopard coming out?

Thanks!

First of all, thank you for the guide, it really helps. biggrin.gif But I wondered if I could get some advice. I really have NO idea where to begin.

I need a laptop for college. I mostly have the simple demands listed, surfing the internet, play music, the basic things a desktop does. Sounds lame but something that comes in bright colors would not hurt, because I admit I want something cute, because I am a girl, and I've always wanted a yellow laptop, hah hah. I do realize that's pretty trivial though.
Plus, I don't want it to be outrageously expensive, at least under $1000. Price is a big issue with me, I don't have loads of cash to blow. Also, I do download/upload a lot of media, 95% of which is music/mp3's, but if I need to I could buy an external harddrive for that if my laptop runs out of space. Like I said it's for college, so I guess it should be lightweight.
Everything is pretty basic, but my catch is, I would LIKE a laptop that CAN play games. I'm not a huge gamer, however, mostly I want it to play the Sims 3, maybe Star Wars Battlefront, but not like a GAMING laptop necessarily. But that would mean better processor and video card and the likes, so would that up the price too much? Would that mean getting a bigger laptop, and upping the WEIGHT too? Because I also need to carry this to and from classes during college, plus the low budget, so I'm not really sure what to do. Obviously the gaming would be the first thing I'd sacrifice when buying a laptop for school, it's just a question of whether or not I have to.

I feel bad because a lot of other people who posted narrowed down their decisions to a few choices, but like I said, I don't know where to start, so pointing me in any direction at all is much appreciated.

I think for most people, the lower sata interface won't be too noticeable, I don't think it'll concern you much. I don't know much about the features of the new chipset to be honest. No idea when snow leopard may come out (I would guess around early Fall), better ask Xarthan and the guys at the Mac thread for that smile.gif

As a guy, I always get frustrated when my female friends prioritize color and looks over specs tongue.gif but ultimately you should buy what will make you happy and satisfied!
Based on your needs, I think you're pretty much stuck with Dell Inspiron and Studio models because 1) they tend to offer a variety of lid color options although at a price, 2) they can usually be had for $1000 including a video card. Between the Inspiron and Studio I prefer the Studio since its a bit thinner and better looking but the Inspiron will be cheaper (it is the 2nd cheapest line in the Dell series)

I think you should narrow down your choices to 13-14" models, although 15"-16" tend to be cheaper and have better video card options.. you'll notice the weight when carrying it around.

HP G50-109NR Notebook PC

I barely got this laptop as a graduation gift and the battery life on it REALLY sucks but i'm not sure if it's just the laptop or if I did something wrong. I at first wanted to charge my laptop for 24 hours because I heard that it gives your laptop a longer battery life but my brother said to only charge it overnight so it won't get fried and thats what I did. My battery life is really bad, it will completely die out in an hour while my other friend's laptop wouldn't die until 3-5 hours later. I don't really hear much good things about HP laptops but I didn't think it was going to be this bad. Is it the laptop itself that has horrible battery life or is it because I didn't let it charge for 24 hours that it dies so quick? How can I improve my battery life? I don't want it to totally die out in the wrong moments when I go to college and stuff ><" Thanks!

what's the battery life you're getting and at what settings? What cell battery do you have? It seems that your G50-109NR uses an AMD chip.. notebooks using AMD chips tend to be cheap, but they also tend to have not so good battery life compared to their Intel counterparts.

I guess you could say the Dell Studio 13, the Sony Vaio Z and SR series, and the Lenovo U series. None have that nice unibody aluminum chassis the mbp 13 has, but these four aren't all plastic either, on the PC side, they're the better 13" models out there.. however all of them are due to be "refreshed" sometime this summer or early fall.

I knooow, the colors, I'm sorry! I'm not trying to prioritize color, I'm just saying it wouldn't hurt. tongue.gif Not that it's much better but hey. At least I'm honest?
Anyway, thank you so much for the advice and so quickly too. I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron right now. The graphics card it comes with is a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD, and when customizing it doesn't give the option of changing or upping that. The Studio has the same one, no options either. On the back of the Sims 3 it says it needs a GMA 3-series or GMA 4-series, but I'm not sure what that means. I tried googling it but I still couldn't really find it. Does it fit the requirements?
And lastly, I know in your guide it said not to buy one til you need it. School for me starts in August, so should I wait even though it's only two months away?

are you in the US? There should be other GPU options available, especially for the Studio series (the x4500HD is integrated and not preferable if you want to do more serious gaming).

now that I'm looking at it, the Inspiron 14 is actually the old Inspiron 1420.. which is 2 generations old.. Don't get t hat. The Inspiron 13 has only integrated options and they are 1 generation old.

On the Studio side, the Studio 14z has the 9400M G, get that over the X4500HD.. the 9400M G isn't the greatest but its better than integrated graphics and should do the Sims 3 well enough.
