I need some major advice. I'm going to attend college this fall, so the laptop will mostly be used for school assignments & internet surfing. I'm definitely not a heavy gamer (I have desktop for that), but I do tend to watch a lot of videos (not in HD, but relatively good quality) & occasionally download + play mp3s. I am also a HEAVY multi-tasker. I'm on a tight budget - $600. I'm stuck between these two models.

MSI X320-037US
*Keyboard looks a bit flimsy
*Only has 2GB of RAM

Acer Aspire Timeline AS3810TZ-4880
*Claims to have a battery life of 8 hours, but is riddled w/numerous problems (hang-ups, freezes, etc.)
*Looks great, but I would like to choose a laptop based on specs & my needs

Should I take my chances w/the Timeline or go w/the more dependable (seemingly) MSI?

Any advice/other suggestions for laptops would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm about to literally slam my head into the desk w/all the stress this is giving me.

wow those two are some SLOW computers. 1.6 and 1.3ghz SINGLE CORE??? In a normal sized laptop? Look elsewhere, they wont be fast enough. My 1.66ghz eepc can barely handle basic tasks. Go for something with at least a dual. im sure there are some slim dual core laptops.

edit: heavy multitasker? forget it. trust me youll regret it. If i run itunes plus firefox plus virus scan on my eepc at the same time, it almost uses 100% cpu already = =

hahaha I totally agree with you.

I got centrino duo. 2 Cores @ 1.73 GHz and it ain't that great... For Multi-Tasking, I suggest Intel Core 2 Duo processors. wink.gif

I got the dv4t and I did customize it. But the price I paid was a lot less than that. You can get a better value these days when you go to bestbuy, costco, or fry's.
If you want a light wait laptop, then don't get a 16 inch. Get a 13 or 14 inch laptop. If you want a 16 inch, then you should buy a netbook.

the 1.6ghz processor used in the MSI is an atom processor commonly used in netbooks. the MSI xslim series are for aimed at those who want something in the form factor of a macbook air, but for much less the cost (but compromising performance and build quality).

the 1.3ghz is an Ultra low voltage processor, it is not the same as a 1.6 atom, and is in fact probably more powerful (people need to understand its not just a higher numbers thing, but also the type of processor it is). ultra low voltage cpus tend to be around 1.2-1.5ghz single core, because they are aimed to those who want very long battery life.

Any recommendation for a good quality laptop that is portable and mainly
used for business works? Webcam prefered please! Thank you guys!

Something under $700 would be excellent.

My post wasn't properly answered in the mac thread so here goes:

Hi, I am about to buy a MBP 2.8ghz 15" with the anti-glare (matte? yea? :X) option. After much research, I'm pretty much leaning towards the matte option (95%) just need to check it out in stores before ordering online (cuz you can't buy a customized mbp instores right?).

The one last remaining issue is the hardrive. The 2.8 comes with a 500gig HD which I was planning to downgrade to a 320 but at 7200rpm (faster? biggrin.gif). Thing is... I heard that the 7200rpm HD had problems (notably the beeping one which was solved: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Hard_Dr...are_Update_2_0) and that they are loud? Is this true?

How much louder is a 7200rpm hd compared to the 5400rpm ones? I've also read (http://www.macsimumn..._drives_video/) that this applies only to the 17" model.

So can anybody clear this up? (I am aware we are not a tech forum but I don't feel like signing up on a random forum and ask one question)

thanks

The 7200RPM HD is supposed to be just a little bit louder than the 5400RPM HD. But it's up to you, as my 7200RPM HD is pretty silent and is as quiet as my 5400RPM HD. Depends if you really need the extra speed in the HD.

if you want to limit yourself to models that are primarily aimed towards business (i.e Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Vostro, Latitude, Precision series, HP elitebook, etc).. a lower end Thinkpad like the R series may be within range.. but if anything the Vostro series (which is very basic, no frills) will be affordable and within your range. In general many business notebooks tend to be pricier and have certain features that make them stand out from main stream notebooks i.e shock protected HD, lots of security features either via software or hardware, etc. However many others tend to just be regular notebooks painted all black, trying to pass itself off as a business model. Some would argue that macbooks are business models, but whether they are or not, they definitely will not come under $700.

wow, very informative.

~btw i don't know if this question belongs here but please forgive me if it doesn't.

i'm going to buy a wacom tablet for my laptop b/c of my digital arts but i don't know if the wacom is compatible with laptops or not so i'm curious if anyone out there have or used a wacom with a laptop before? i've only used it with a desktop so i don't know if laptop would be the same and i don't want to waste my money on it if it's not compatible. o yeah, i've heard of tablet pc but that's not what i want, just to make it clear i'm talking about the wacom itself.

yes, what makes you think it will be different than with a desktop?

it should be the same as using a notebook for the same thing. its merely a matter of your connection and hard drive size (get an external if you do lots of downloading).
