Ahh very vague because I have no clue how these laptop/computer things go..

But so far, I'm thinking about these:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218093381700
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218044489891
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1218108029758

What I'm most concerned of is how hot these laptops get and how fast..

For the processor speed, what should I consider for a laptop? As in range.. Also RAM, hard drive size etc.

Do you think the CULV chips might be too slow for a lot of people? My friend recently bought an acer timeline with a ulv intel and he wasn't able to stream Hulu smoothly in full screen. I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't enable ultra power save and his internet was able to keep up with the stream.

RAM : 2GB and up
Hard drive : 250
Budget: 500-700 possibly 800
Screen size: 15-16 inches nothing to big something that I can carry around on campus

It is my senior year and my brother just told me he was gonna buy me a new laptop for college and I am totally lost.

it could be slow for some, although I think it should be able to stream Hulu video since its not THAT demanding. In theory a CULV should be more powerful than an Intel Atom.

some people may consider 15 and 16 as being too big.. you should go to a computer store and carefully examine models in that size range. I personally hate lugging my 15.4" notebook around.

Excaliberpc has been around for a while, i haven't heard too much complaints. Not sure about cheap brands.com.
between the F6ve and vc, the former has a much better video card and is a newer model than the vc.

HP and Sony have already stopped producing those three models and have since introduced newer ones.

My laptop died the other day so I'm trying to find a new one. But I'm really unsure if I should get a smaller laptop, which is easier to travel with or a larger one with a faster processor? I've mainly focussed my search for a smaller laptop though, strictly staying away from netbooks.

I was thinking of the Dell Inspiron 11z, upgraded to the 4GB RAM and 320GB HDD. £499.
But, its processor is "Intel® Pentium® Dual Core Processor ULV SU4100 (1.30GHz, 2MB, 800MHz)".
With a speed of 1.30GHz, won't it be a tad slow? Despite being on a dual core?
Also I'm worried it might be too small, because I'd be using it as a main computer whilst at Uni.

Another I am considering is the Acer Aspire 2920-603G25Mi Laptop. £499.
12.1", Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor, 2.2GHz, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 0.3MP webcam.
Slightly bigger, faster processor but less memory and crappy webcam.

There's also the Packard Bell Dot Laptop. £349
11.6", AMD Athlon 64 L110 processor (1.6GHz), 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD.
Big memory but crappy processor?

>_<

of the three, the Acer will probably be the better performing. but the Dell will have the better battery life and cooling since it uses a CULV chip. A hard drive can always be swapped and replaced.. RAM yes, assuming its not soldered into the motherboard (a number of netbooks do this).

yeah i do feel 16" is too big, yet your 12 - 15.4" is also quite broad.
in anycase, as far as specs go it really depends what you want to do and how much you want to spend. at that config, you should be able to do the things most people want in a computer (internet, chat, videos, ms office, photoshop) but probably not too much heavy gaming that utilizes 3d graphics

I think I have finally decided on a 14 inch laptop for size. As for what I plan on doing, I don't really play games on my laptop besides emulators so I shouldn't need anything to fancy right? I really just plan on downloading, browsing the internet, and homework. Also there are like 4 different wifi cards offered and I don't know which one to pick, does it really even matter?

Should I even get the 30 day free trail of the anti virus protection because I plan on getting a security program from the university right away.

I think you made a good choice on screen size (within Dell's 14" models, I like that thin inspiron 14z series myself). As for emulators, as long as its not a PS2 or GC emulator you should be fine.

as for wifi cards.. I think I prefer the Dell branded AGN one over the Intel variant, it seems to pick much more signals in my experience with both of them.

and no, if you don't need it don't get it... save you the hassle of uninstalling it.
Personally I'm a fan of Dell's business models like the Latitude and Precision and they offer the option to have no software installed (the way I prefer it).

So the wifi card I have there should be good right? No need to upgrade?

Yea I hate having there preinstalled free trail for 30 days software too. Like they offer Microsoft Office but it has nothing I need so I just plan on getting it at the university for cheap also.

Question:
Do all laptop brands like Dell, HP, ACER, etc have the same type of keyboards. Like you know the type of keyboards on MACs, are there any other brands that sell laptops that offer something similar that is not a MAC?

its a nice,, cheaper alternative to the Vaio Z series (which is much better but alot more pricier) yet both seem to be due for some kind of upgrade/replacement, yet I haven't heard Sony announce anything yet

the problem is that even if you give me the exchange rate in USD, I still don't know how much a specific model here would cost in RM. For example many dell Inspirons are considered cheap in the US but it seems that its not so cheap in other countries relative to other models. In addition, Malaysia also has some brands and models the US doesn't have, and vice versa.

as for internet and downloading, that can be done on any notebook, even a netbook. video editing may be a bit more demanding.. but it ultimately depends on how mobile you need the notebook to be..

Thank you for answering my question; though some are pretty stupid...
Also I am so sorry for bothering you again and again T^T

I am wondering about MSI...
I have found MSI 12 inch (MSI VR220-033US) pretty good deals..
Since, Dell does not have 12 inches laptop + the new 13 inches is not our yet.

The questions are
- Have you heard anything about the new dell 13 inches?
- Is MSI stable or is it a good brand that I can trust?

MSI is generally more known for its motherboards than notebooks. They used to be an ODM, in which other companies would outsource notebook production to them (like how Apple and Sony outsources to Foxconn). Around 2005 they started to sell their own notebooks, which were usually barebone whitebooks. I think their market presence and quality has slowly but surely risen since then.

at the moment 12" is not a very popular size anymore, 13" is usually the most popular size for thin and light notebooks, while netbooks tend to be limited to 11" and under (there are always exceptions of course) but these are the norm. In addition the latest Dell models in the thin and light categories tend to use CULV processors, emphasizing longer battery life and less heat at the cost of performance (compared to a notebook using a core duo 2). I think they only have two or three models at the moment that use the new Core i7, so if you want a notebook with this processor you may have to wait a bit more.

As for that specific MSI model you asked.. its a "no thrills" model, good enough for basic tasks and of course, more powerful than a netbook. I personally would find that right side heat vent bothersome because I often use an external mouse and hate hot air blowing on my hand.

its Sony's latest edition to their C series line up. Nothing much to say other than that almost anything that starts with an N or a C in the Vaio line up, is considered their "budget" line up. it looks nice, costs alot for what it offers, and should do what most people need in a laptop.. i.e. basic tasks

Hi, I like to ask, between the Dell Inspiron and HP G60t series, which is more reliable?

I have a Sony Vaio CS Series and I'm being plagued by the fan issue just like the majority of CS owners out there.
I've totally lost faith in Sony...
