since i live in germany i dont know too much about the quali of brands in america. but i would always recommend samsung laptops (slim, light, quiet) or toshibas (good disp) or asus (good overall package). lenovos have the best keyboards but they are much to expensive. dells are ok (good price) but they dont look good and are kinda clumsy

i wouldn't buy a sony. they are too expensive compared to other lts with the same config.

unfortunately, the US does not have Samsung (due to non-compete with Dell). Which is a real shame.. they are very nice notebooks.

which Macbook in particular, the new 13.3" the 15.4 macbook pro? or the new 17"?
the new 13.3" w00t.gif

(thanks for all your help in the last post range! it cleared up SO many things i was confused about >_<!!) and i have another question hoho i got into the habit of never turning off my imac desktop. i'm guessing that wouldn't be a good idea with a laptop? sweatingbullets.gif i'm downloading things 24/7 ..so i always have something running. about the heating problem, as long as i'm just using it on a desk, it won't really harm anything, right? the keyboard will be fine of course? sweatingbullets.gif

and i've been hearing good things about samsung laptops, too. i might be going to korea this summer... just in general, which would you choose between mac vs. samsung? (for a samsung with similar qualities with macbook) or are they pretty much the same?? o_O;

Cheers, kiye.

Currently watching 49 Days and adoring Jo Hyun Jae.

depends on the laptop's issues with heat. Some have no problems being left on overnight and such.. others have severe heat issues and will shut down after it reaches a certain point. In either case, just make sure your laptop gets proper ventilation. A cooling pad would be a good idea.

Samsung laptops are known to be one of the thinnest, lightest..and obviously more expensive models. I generally do not reccomend bringing it over here unless you know they have a global warranty (you'll need to check on that). There is an American vendor www.dynamism.com that imports Samsung, installs an english OS, and offers maintenance services.. but they charge alot.

this comparison is useless as you neither stated which model you're interested in and what your needs are.

Furthermore, Pentium M is already obsolete. Intel has moved on to Core Duo and Solos, and will switch to Merom later this year.

Hi,
I'm looking for a laptop around 12" (thin & light) for basic computing. I definately want something portable - No more than 6 lbs! I don't want to spend too much money, but if its worth it.. My price maximum is $1500 (including S&H, tax, etc)

I found the Dell XPS M1210 and it looks pretty hot. I'm not sure on the battery life though, because I want a laptop with really good battery life. I hate how laptops just die out on you =x it really sucks.

I just need a notebook for basic typing, must do wireless, nice design, can watch some drama & photoshop.. basic stuff. Thanks :]

didn't you buy one by now? tongue.gif

well you won't find a laptop that's 6lbs until you start moving up to 15.4" and higher screen sizes.
the Dell XPS M1210 is nice, just remember NOT to get the version with dedicated graphics as it'll suck away the battery life. I believe this model will replace the Dell Inspiron 700m series, which also means that you probably won't get any coupons to use with the M1210 (the coupons are usually for Inspiron line only). On the bright side, the XPS series is usually built better than the Inspiron (this one sports a magnesium lid), and you probably should get 4 hours doing simple tasks with wifi off and a 9 cell battery. the M1210 is pretty fat for a 12". If you're okay with older models.. maybe you can still find the Dell 710m for cheap on Dell's site (although I think they may have removed it by now).

There's the MSI 1057, which is a whitebook. it's lighter than the Dell and also 12". Some have complained of the keyboard flex
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=54905
it gets slightly less battery life as its using an 8 cell vs the 9 cell used in the Dell review.

If you can spend a lil more and don't mind the missing optical drive. The IBM/Lenovo X60 is the best 12" model in terms of build quality and battery. As a user of many Thinkpads, they are very solidly constructed, no flex whatsoever, semi-rugged, and light. And in the case of the x60, it probably gets the best battery life for a 12", reaching nearly 6 hours on an 8 cell.
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2828

other than these, I can't really reccomend too many Core Duo 12" models. for 13", there's the new Mac which is sturdy, nice battery life, and a nice price tag.. but it does have heat issues and it depends on whether or not you can adjust to the Mac OS and/or patient enough till boot camp fixes out more bugs when running windows. There's also the Asus Z35f which should come out soon.

Haha, you are so funny! tongue.gif Actually I do have a laptop.. but its really my dad's laptop. We fight over it all the time (even though we have 3 other pcs in the house. Amazing, I know.) I just got into this NYU program with scholarship so my dad is all happy and well, it means I get to get something nice.. blush.gif

I just came back from Circuit City and I saw that a 14" isn't even that big. I think I'm going to increase my range and say that 14" is my max. That MSI looks nice but I just read you have to build it yourself? I'm not into the whole I-built-my-own-computer thing... My dad did it once but he said it was a waste of time, although cheaper sweatingbullets.gif

I also read about the Thinkpad .. but the thing is I've never bought an IBM laptop before and I'm pretty biased for Dell / HP.. lol brand loyalty.. In addition its so expensive =x

*gah* laptop shopping is so difficult wacko.gif I must research some more!

they may not look too different in size, but you will feel it when carrying it around.
As for the MSI, that's what whitebooks are.. the ability to build them yourself. However there are resellers who are willing to do that for you. the two best MSI resellers are www.xmeld.com and www.rawpowerpc.com. They'll do the configuration for you and build it as well as doing the repairs should you need to send it in (This is one reason why I prefer whitebooks, you have more direct contact with the resellers who can maintain it instead of a "faceless" big name company). Furthermore, provided that you live in a different state from these resellers, you can avoid paying SALES TAX. That is something you CAN'T do with name brands.

IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads are expensive for a reason.. they're tough! they're one of those brands where you can stomp on em repeatedly and it'll still work. This couple hid their laptop in an oven when they went on a trip, and came back totally forgetting it was still there.. even after turning it on and melting a number of its parts..it was still fully functional. Of course I hope you won't be the type who puts their laptops in an oven or stomps on it. Like Dot1q said before, almost all major corporations use either Dell Latitudes or IBM for their business notebooks.

as far as 14" goes.. the cheapest is the Dell Inspiron E1405.. it could be had for less than $800. the Portable One MX (Asus A8jm) is the most powerful 14" in the US and is priced at $1550. Some others worth mentioning, Asus Z62f, Asus W3V (with rebates is $1299), and IBM/Lenovo Z61t

performance comes at the cost of battery life.
When ever you add a more powerful GPU (i.e 1.66ghz to 2.13ghz), it'll come at the expense of battery life
you throw in a vid card.. it'll come at the expense of battery life. You throw in a more powerful one, it'll suck more battery life.
larger screen size sucks more battery life
wi-fi sucks battery life, etc.

You can't go wrong with Lenovo/IBM. Their hardware is all top quality and their design is all about productivity. It may not have all the extras which some newer models have, but you get top notch build quality with quality parts all in a simple design that will get the work done. If I was going to spend in the upper cost ranges of laptops, I'd get a Thinkpad over Vaios any day.

you should read the guide first before stating such a broad question

depends how you configure it.. they both can handle it.. any notebook can. you just need to figure out which screen size you'll be comfortable with.

1gb 667mhz is better of course, its the standard speed for the Core Duo generation. 533mhz is synonymous with the Sonoma generation. and not really, it will depend mostly on your ISP

what's "good" depends on what kind of requirements and needs are in a notebook.
