Well my brother had ordered the Macbook online and since his shipping address for his bank account is different from my home (he doesnt live with us anymore) they said he must call his bank to add our address to his bank account. This would be fine and merry if he had regulary access to a phone. Recently the phones went out so he hasn't been able to call and they'll cancel the order soon so I'm going to tell him to forget it and get me something else (I was kind of iffy on the Macbook because of its problem with power point compatability and the fact I would have to buy microsoft office 2004 for it and the whole OS change is daunting. this hassel makes the macbook even less desirable for me). limit is $1000~ even while lets say i'm just typing the video card would still make a huge difference on battery life?

outside of the Dell E1505, you're not going to find a laptop that is under $1000 AND sporting a dedicated video card. Furthermore, the E1505 is significantly heavier and bigger compared to the macbook. Despite it's heat issues, the macbook is a pretty nice deal for that type of notebook.

The battery estimates I gave you are max.. as in with brightness reduced, wi-fi off, and simple tasks being performed. Do gaming, movie watching, etc.. start watching the 3 hour max be reduced to 2- 2 and a half hours.

how bout this, in the other thread you were considering getting a video card right? you might as well not consider it at all and use the money there to get a better notebook. ALL new notebooks now are on PCI-E, and the weakest PCI-E card is most likely superior to the best PCI card to which you are limited to.

If you want to forego the video card requirement, there's lots of notebooks out there that can be had for less than $1000, particulary those in Dell. Asus has a 13.3" with integrated graphics, and a white chassis coming out soon, called the Z35f.. looks like this one here
http://geared2play.com/phpbb/nfphpbb/viewtopic.php?t=577
but will be newer.

other wise if you demand some gaming and still want some portability.. the Compal HGL30 is probably your only bet.. at base configuration, it could be had for less than $1200, comes with an Nvidia 7600 card (the best card in a 14" widescreen), and a large 9-cell battery (probably 3:30-4hrs). Its downside is that it's got a teal blue lid.

perhaps an integrated video card on a laptop would be better than the integrated memory card in my desktop
System Requirements

Minimum:
1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP/ME/98, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended:
2.4 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

^those are the CS requirements.

anyway completely remove the video card requirement
i would spend a little more money if it were my money, this was supposed to be a gift for my hs graduation and i dont want to bother my brother with anything more than the price he was willing to spend

that's pretty considerate of you. Well the old CS will run on integrated grapics fine.. CS Source will run at low settings.. but a vid card makes you more future proof. but yeah, I suggest you consider Dell as they offer nice specs for the money (its not the best looking or the best built..but its "good enough). There's some notebooks that use ATi's integrated graphics instead of Intels.. the ATi one is much better. I can't think of one at the moment though.. surprisingly tongue.gif

I'm hoping that someone can help me here.. Since college is starting next month, I need to buy a laptop but my problem is which one? The computer I have is from Dell and my sister bought a laptop from Dell before she went to college but I'm just trying to keep my options open. I just need something that's not too heavy.. preferably small/lightweight, something that is good for holding documents.. doing the regular college work stuff, not so much for entertainment because I have my computer for that. I just need something I can take with me anywhere on campus to do essays/study and stuff like that... Thanks in advance!! biggrin.gif smile.gif

well i doubt i will try to update my laptop or even rely on it as a main computer for more than 1-2 years so future-proofed laptop isnt that big of a deal.
heres what im looking at:
Averatec Laptop
Levono Laptop
Sony Laptop
Second Sony Laptop (Seems better than the other one to me, but what do i know?)
Compaq

out of those 4, only the Lenovo is recent.. using a Core Duo.. the other 3 are all last year's models and kind of pricy for something obsolete too.

The Averatec looks mighty similar to the macbook (I especially like its white casing). Is a core duo much of a difference compared non-core duo? what would be different? like how fast applications will run?
ohh check out that last compaq on this list
they both have similar processor speeds

Averatec doesn't make their own notebooks, it's just a Rebranded MSI-1012, as seen here
http://www.xmeld.com/html/msi1012.html

Core duo is much more future proof and is better for the multi tasker. Also the "integrated intel graphics" on the Core Duo's is slightly better.

where you you reccommend to buy the MSI-1012 from? would it be cheaper elsewhere?

interesting i just read up a little about dual cores, not a lot of software support utilize both processors?

xmeld and rawpowerpc are the two best MSI resellers in the US.. that "white" one above has already been replaced by a newer model, the MSI 1057.. the Core Duo version. You might want to consider that one instead.. this is a 12" widescreen keep in mind.

you seem intent on getting a white notebook.

I guess I'll ask him to get the Lenovo, even through those resellers for the same specs the price is way over budget. Thats for the help though!

School's only a month away and I've been saving money for a laptop. Apple is having a special. Buy laptop you get free nano (after rebate). I'm thinking of getting the 13 inch MacBook. But I read a few pages backin this thread and Range you said that Mac has a heating problem. What would you recommend for me? I just need it for school stuff and occasionally watch some movies on it. I know very little about which notebook brand would be the best, so I need your advice please.
I'm looking for something light since I'm a commuter and it would be a hassle to carry around such heavy things, price range $1000-$1600, and long battery life.

Thank you biggrin.gif

all notebooks involve some kind of compromise.. Macs do heat up (both models), there's no doubt about it.. but for $1000 (and the free iPod).. its a nice deal as its a pretty solid notebook that's light weight. Long battery life would depend on what you consider as "long". how many hours are you expecting?

hm... im really computer stupid, so i'm completely clueless about good laptops.
im leaving for college on the 24th of august, so have until then to find a suitable laptop.
im trying to find one that is like 14' or less. i think i would usually use it for schoolwork, surfing online, lots of media stuff and dling lots of music files... im leaning towards the Sony Vaio but i dont know which series... im most worried about battery life and the heating up problem... oh & i like the sony cuz it comes with built in camera & microphone & its pretty...
my budget is like $2000 or less... i can spend that much... but i feel kind of guilty asking my parents to pay so much. sonys are so expensive, so i'm wondering if there are good alternatives that still look pretty & fit what im looking for... hehehee

yeah 4 hours is nice.. keep in mind, these won't be laptops with video cards.. so no heavy gaming for you.

Macbook should be nice and reach there. If you don't want to deal with the Mac OS or the heat issue.. Dell has a number of laptops that are both cheap and will get you 4 hours of battery life.. like the E1405, or the Dell XPS M1210 (with out the Nvidia 7400 card).

If you both can wait a little longer, the Asus Z35f will be a nice 13" alternative that comes in black or white and should be pretty cheap. All of these will reach 4 hours.

see above.
If you're sticking to just Sony.. pick the Vaio SZ with the lowest configurations, I don't know if they have a model that has integrated graphics (doesn't seem like you do much gaming).

Range What do you think of this? http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP....puters_TXSeries

It's much more lighter than the Mac! w00t.gif But do you think that their secruity programs are better than the Mac?
I've narrow it down to the Mac Notebook because, it would be easier to bring the product down to their store and get it fixed if something goes wrong. The price is not bad either.

I wish I could bring you around to go shopping for these laptops ph34r.gif Thanks again & good night.
