I got rid of the Dell notebook and decided to get a better one instead.
So you're saying the provider of the warranty is the issue? I received my notebook from gentechpc.com. They seemed to be a reputable small company that specialized mainly in ASUS related computers/notebooks. I hope they're as good as they say otherwise I'm screwed.

don't worry, gentechpc is pretty well known and reliable.

So I'm having a really hard time deciding between these deals... Any input...?

And then, there's also the option of getting a refurbished/open box Macbook pro, but it'd be more expensive than all those above, at about $1350. Are they really much worse condition/quality than brand new Macs? My mom is convinced that refurbished/open box products should not be bought... and even though ultimately I'm the one making my decision, I hate getting on my mom's bad side, haha.

it depends on what your needs are.. do you do gaming? the Nvidia 7600 in the Compal and x1600 in the Macbook Pro will be far superior to the integrated stuff the Vaio N, Asus F3F, Fujitsu A, and Vaio FE (although the FE can be had with a 7400 or 7600).
if you demand a video card and are obviously willing to spend over $1400.. I highly reccomend this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16834220104

its 14" vs the 15.4" above, but it means its lighter..it has a very good video card for its screen size, and is at $1300.

Hi, I have a few questions about laptops. (I ended getting required the dell precision m90 workstation for school) and the two main things that bug me are:

1. Are there any options where we can change the contrast in a screen like we can in a desktop monitor? It's hard to see the light yellows/blues such as a highlighted new email on hotmail. I know there is a brightness adjustment, but that doesn't fix the problem. But from reading the info posted on the first page, I'm afraid I'm stuck with this problem?

and

2. Are laptops usually slower downloading files than desktops? Is there a way we can configure laptops to have faster bandwidth speed? I did a bandwidth speed test on both the laptop and desktop I have, and the desktop was something like 7.9 mb/s, whereas the laptop was slower.. around 1.3 mb/s ...

Anyhoo, whenever I download something with my desktop it usually averages at a speed 600+ kb/s, but for the same file which I had downloaded onto my laptop (not at the same time), it went at 19kb/s

Both are connected with cable connection and are not running on wireless internet ... I hope my questions make sense haha..
Thanks for your help in advance!

Hi Range. I currently have a Sony Vaio S series. I rarely use it, in fact I use it once a month or so but today I've noticed heating problems. I've had it on for less than one hour and when I touch the batteries...I couldn't believe the heat. Should I be concerned? I have my AC adapter on and I'm not playing games or anything with my laptop.

Thanks

Thanks Carol for the banner. Fleur rocks for making Owen look sexy!

The N series is Sony's very basic, low end model. There's not too many features on it period. If you're using it for basic tasks like websurfing, it's good enough. However those who need more ports (the thing only has 2 usb ports), video cards, etc should look elsewhere. As far as price vs performance, there are other notebooks that give you more for lesser price.

Was it always that hot or is it something recent? try blowing out the vents with compressed air. Also, I believe some of the S series are included in the big battery recall a few months ago. Better call up Sony and see if yours is included, if so, you get a free replacement battery!

Laptop lcds, like desktop lcds still have some limitations when compared to good ol CRTs. You have a default resolution wxga, wxga+, wsxga, wsxga+, wuxga, etc.. you can change the resolution but the contrast will make it look sorta blurry.. so you're pretty much buying as is when it comes to these LCDS. Many of these laptop manufacturers include some software to adjust the colors and brightness, but that's about it Dell's in particular aren't really known for their screens, regardless if they are inspirons, Latitudes, or XPS.

as for 2 and 3, you should post that in troubleshooting and see what the guys there can advise you on the speed issue as you should be getting similar speeds between the two.

I haven't noticed such a big problem with the heat, it is only recently that I've noticed that my batteries heat up really quickly...it's quite hot as well...works like an average heater! I live in Australia so I went to http://www.recalls.gov.au/search_recall_na...;Submit2=Submit to see if sony was recalling my battery but the S series isn't listed...should I still call Sony up to check? Thanks Range

yeah you should call. that site isn't that great, you should check on Sony's page itself.
the battery models are VGP-BPS3A, VGP-BPS2B. Check to see if your battery model is one of these two.

in general, most notebook "scroll buttons" are on the side, although some older ones don't have it

Thanks for listing the battery models, Range. My laptop currently uses the VGP-BPS2B, so I think I'll have to give Sony a call soon. What would I have to show them as proof of purchase, this laptop was a present so have the receipt but I do have the box and everything that came with it. Is that okay? Would I have to send the battery back to sony?

digital arts is a vague term.. does it require some kind of specific capabilities out of a laptop? photoshop, etc can be done on any computer. 3d rendering would require a good processor and video card, etc.

a t5600 is a Core 2 duo cpu while the t2300 is a Core duo. The former is newer and has a 64 bit extension. between the two the Lenovo will probably be built a lil better but that HP one has at least a better integrated video card.

no idea, you will have to ask Sony yourself. Although I would assume you will have to send the battery back at their expense.

better for what? each person does different things.
you can read my comprehensive review of the W7 on notebookreview.com however the A8jp, for the specs and price you get, is very difficult to beat. However the W7 should have the better build quality.
