Apple MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz Laptop
but the only inconvenience compared to the Sony SZ is the video card....
sony has GeForce Go and this only has onboard...
do you think the onboard will be able to support counter-strike 1.6 and world of warcraft maybe?

I plan on using it for uni.. so a portable laptop would be good. Also, I need lots of battery, and occasionally play games (when its plugged into ac of course)
the XPS M1210 is a fine laptop, it's built much better than other Dells. However because it has a video card in a 12" machine (there are no other 12" laptops with dedicated video), it is alot thicker and heavier than most (if not all) 12" laptops. Its still portable and if you need battery life, go get a 9 cell.
its for those who intend to play games or do autocad. However those who want to use the Aero feature on Windows Vista, will probably appreciate having a dedicated video card as it is a bit more graphics intensive than XP.
Yup, you definitely need a 9 cell batt, i'm using it, so far i'm happy with it..i use it for editing my video, photoshop- designing and stuff... it's a high perf laptop for me... it also has bluetooth which comes in really handy... I'm happy with it, so far. it's just the 6 cell batt is not enough.
Winning is not everything, but Wanting to Win is.

yeah on board can handle those two games, they are definitely not too graphic intensive.. although you'll probably experience some lag here and there when the action gets intense.

The waiting game begins.
Yes range, im not insane. I have a 1gb stick ordered. $45 for a 1gb stick for total of 1.5gb vs $100 upgrade to 1gb is nuts.
To me that was best balance of cpu, gpu, size and price... I opted out of the webcam because cams make me paranoid. And vista basic because I hope I won't need premium. 60gb drive is trivial, in a year when I get tired of the laptop o_o 7200rpm sata with perpendicular storage and maybe onboard flash bwahahaha!!!

From what I read on notebookreview, that 7200 is basically Geforce4 performance so its terrible. But I survived on a geforce 4 for a LOONG while so if it can basically give me that ill be pleased.
Now the phase of regret...
I got a new hard drive for my thinkpad since I didnt know how long I would use it... and
Like the bootup is faast shutdown is fast. Everything is like normal again! argggg

Thats a common laptop... go to frys, bestbuy, circuit city whatevers near you to get a feel of it. Go poke it. Open and close the screen. Lift it... drop it.. whatever mess with it at the store. Dont forget to type a LOT on it... like grab a CD and start typing the tracks... get a feel of the keyboard and stuff...
Annd go to notebookreview forums. Vist the forums... search for the dv6000 thread.

The frys near me (city of industry) only had 1 14" and the rest were like 15.4 and above!
=] yeah if you scroll up you would see the specs of the one I ordered. Its not the most powerful but it should do the trick for me! Im getting mine custom through costco. Same price as the HP site, but I figure if I don't like it, I can take it to costco to return and all that.
@range - I sometimes wish someone would benchmark the GMA950 for CSS, BF1942 and stuff... all I hear is its weak its this and that. Truthfully I doubt its all THAT bad. But being the paranoid one I went for the 7200.... which is still utterly inferior to today standards but hey it seems better.

weird question... so same ODM should imply similar quality then?
Or when you say ODM the body of the laptop is trivial... focus is mostly on the innards?
Mostly the correlation like this..
Dell Inspiron - Compal
Toshiba Satellite - Compal
HP/Compaq – primarily Quanta, occasionally Compal and Asus
Generally speaking, Inspirons are known to be poorly built as with Toshibas. Im sure there are many HP and Comcraps that are also known to be horrendious.

Nah, I wouldn't really use ODMs as a basis for quality.
For example, Compal (the 2nd biggest notebook manufacturer) makes Dell Inspirons, and they make IBM Thinkpad T series. That's like day and night in terms of quality!!
much of it has to do with how much they have to work with under what kind of budget.
hell, sometimes you have the same notebooks, but its the actual reseller that may skimp out on parts. For example Alienware uses Uniwill and Clevo models like many other resellers, but Alienware tends to have a higher problem rate.. this is because easily upgradeable things, i.e HDs, RAM, etc they use are cheap no name brands, while other resellers use better brands like Kingston, etc.

finally i am going to do it! I WILL DO IT! :x
but there is one problem...my parents will be buying a laptop as well as i, therefore we want to get it together. i originally wanted to buy the dell xps 1210 ... but then i felt like i could get everything i wanted from the 1210 from an hp x: so i decided i would get the HP Pavilion dv2000z but then i dont know what computer to buy my parents
basically my dad just needs a laptop to work with microsoft word/excel, use the internet, and watch a movie or a dvd. so out of the HP series which laptop would be the sturdiest...and no need for a huge screen maybe 14/16 will be fine.

Why dont you consider the 6000t? The 15.4" screen might be nicer to their older eyes

How about will you travel with it? If you run around I say 14" those average 5.5 pounds.
In a week you will know what I think about the dv2000t, it seems like the best but if you see a long post with lots of mini-coopers and rainbowing you will know its no good

there's no 16" laptops anymore.. and 15.4" is considered huge. You should go to a store and see which size you want.. keep in mind bigger screen size = more weight.
the XPS M1210 is built far better than any HP Pavillion series. HPs best built models are their NX/NC business models. If you do order from Dell, remember its better to order over phone because you can haggle over the price as operators are commissioned based.

good enough for general needs.. although perhaps you can find a better deal with HP or Dell Inspiron 1505, as far as budget models go.
