So Im a bit confused, I'm unsure whether or not I want to take Japanese.
Maybe the only thing I want is just to write and speak in Japanese, play some games that are in Japanese.
Watch shows that are in Japanese without subtitles.
But i'm not sure if it would benefit me, like help me in life. ><

So what are your opinions?

This is exactly the same dilemna I have, so I can't really be of much help. Though, I do think that if it's something that you really want to do then you should go ahead and do it. Learning a language can't really be a bad thing because it does boost job opportunites and even if it's not required for the job itself, it still looks good when applying.

Not everything that's beneficial helps you specifically in life.

But knowing a language is REALLY, a nice experience. Take it when you can.
Not only will you learn how to speak, write, learn a new language, it'll let you expand and see cultures and customs which you may have not known before.
And you can start to understand why certain people act that way...it's pretty fascinating.

Language isn't just words...

know why? because there are a lot of people who speak this languages.
the more, the merrier... are you pockets gonna be in the future. biggrin.gif

advice #1
choose what you really wanna learn. nothing beats this advice.

advice #2
choose a language that's close to your native language or the languages you're fluent with, so you'd find it easy to learn.
you know, once you don't understand, once you find it hard... it's all gonna end up to waste.

I'm looking at starting to learn Japanese at an evening class at college. I definately don't think it'd be a waste of time. As long as you enjoy it and have a fascination with the language then that's all that matters. Definately go for it! biggrin.gif

It is worth it to learn any language. Unfortunately, though, it's easier said then done. Learning a new language when you are older is super hard. I would know since I'm trying to learn Chinese.

This may be biased as I love to learn languages!

Japanese was my first second language, I fell in love with it. I didn't plan to do anything with it, I just wanted to learn it. Now, I'm 5 years along, considering taking it at University and working in Japan, maybe as an English teacher/Game Designer. :) At first, it may not seem like it'll benefit for you, but the benefits of having another language under your belt are amazing!
But, you have to enjoy the language, I would say. If you find the language horrible and hate it, you're not going to get far. If you like the language then you will. But you have a common goal to work towards to, so I'm guessing it would benefit you. (It is handy knowing Japanese and having like a Japanese PS2 for imports<3, haha.)
I've made a lot of good friends learning Japanese, and it made me want to learn more languages. ^_^ Right now, alongside Japanese, I'm tackling Chinese and Korean... Korean is gonna be easy for me because the grammar is said to be similar to Japanese, another benefit. Haha. (:

As I say though, I'm a budding linguist so this may be biased, but it is good, fo srs.

i agree with most of the others...learning any language is a benefit.
i've been taking japanese for three years now...and i don't think it's a
waste of timee...i learned so much in three years..especially about the culture.
i think that if you have the passion to learn it, then you should pursue it! ^^

If YOU think that will be of use to you in the future, then go ahead. But if learning Japanese will only put you under stress, then I'd suggest for you to take lessons/classes for it whenever you feel right.
one life, one love.

Learning Chinese or Spanish may be more profitable, but if your heart isn't in it then you won't learn anyway.
I had to take Spanish for four years, one year in junior high and three in high school.
Even though I got all the way to AP level, my proficiency sucks. I had no passion for it and never studied outside of school.
So yeah.
If you really want to learn Japanese, then you should!

my only advice for you is to try everything.
this will reduce the "what if's" later on. and learning a second language is hella worth it.
some jobs require a second language. and being bilingual can earn you more dough wink.gif

Any language is worth it if you're going to use it. If it motivates you to learn, then why not?
I started learning Japanese for the same reasons that you want to learn. Now I can probably go to Japan and survive even though I've only learned two years worth. (Still a long way from understanding the language used in drama and games though)
If you are very dedicated then you will learn more in a shorter period of time of course ^^
