i prefer asian music overall...
i remember in an interview, wondergirl ye eun mentioned how korean music focuses on the melodies, but american music is centered more around the beat.
my ipod contains an even mix of both, though ^____^
i just wish that the asian music industry wasn't so obsessed with americanizing themselves...i view it as an act of desperation -__- genuine kpop, jpop, etc. is kind of going down the drain these days ><" now the majority of songs are filled with overrated, cliche american lyrics

American music....i don't care how many people talk bad about american music.

I think of all the classic hits in the american industry that help shaped the type music we hear in the asian industry. I mean most of the asian artists you hear today are modeled after some western artist in one way or another whether it be mariah carey, micheal jackson(who shaped the world), beyonce, etc. Right now I listen to asian music more but at the end of the day my favorite asian artists will never compare to my favorite american artists.

BTW I hate it when people try to justifiy how crappy american music is by comparing really good asian artists to crappy mainstream artists in the US and when they talk about how lovely the lyrics are to a song they don't really undertsand and compare it to some crap rap song lyrics. If you're gonna compare at least do it fairly lol! Stop comparing soulja boy to people like wang lee hom!

American music, mainstream and indie. I prefer both to be American.
I used to listen to a ton of Asian music but I don't really listen to any at all anymore.
To me, it all sounds the same now. Nothing's really that original.
Plus, I hate asian hip hop because I always feel like they're trying way too hard.

i like american music better....
a lot of korean artists are manufactured and unoriginal (ie, sm's kids are all the same)

i'm an indie kid at heart.

American. For all the issues I have with the American music industry(and I have a lot) and it's lack of originality and reliance on formulas. Asian music(mainstream anyway) seems to be an even more watered down, artificial version of all that.*refrains from going off on a rant about big business retarding music*
Since I can't ever seem to get it right.

Hm, I like both, but I think I .. connect more with Asian music? Idunno. I don't even know if that made sense, LOL.
I have both on my ipod, it's just that I get too lazy to actually download American songs. I don't have Limewire or anything, and asian songs are easier to find haha. Plus, I hear American songs all the time in the radio, so yup.

Either way, I like the same genres, so.. meh. xD

American. At least you see American singers trying to be different and stand out. Korean pop artists tend to follow trends too much like Tablo from Epik High said. Like the electronic/techno music in Korea was good to hear at first, and then every other artist in Korea had to jump on the bandwagon and do the same type of music. Plus, Korean pop artist are too manufactured w/ their training for 7 years before debut. If you can sing, you shouldn't have to train for so long. Just a few vocal lessons to help you reach your true potential should be enough. Asian artists also tend to be too clean cut and afraid to take chances for fear of the "netizens" and etc. Chinese music tend to be saturated with a lot of ballads while Korean music tend to be dominated by idol groups w/ a few ballad artists as exceptions on the charts. Japanese Music seems to be the asian country with alot of variety in their charts(hip hop, rock, pop).

If you asked me this a few year ago, it would have been asian...

But seriously, every industry has the good and the bad.

American mainstream is mostly pretty eh...but some of it is good, and since I listen to alot of non mainstream stuff and indie music, I can say there's ALOT there.

Asian music can be original, or it can be terribly generic and bad. Depends, just like american music. Some absolutely suck, while others (leehom, jay chou, jj lin) are very talented and original.

You just need to know where to look.

I agree with some of the replies here . To be honest , I like both but Im more to the American music side . Dont get me wrong , I actually do like Asian music but I dont listen to those manufactured Asian boybands/girlbands like 2PM , 2AM , SUPERJUNIOR,WONDERGIRLS,SNSD, AFTER SCHOOL, XING, ,U-KISS,Fahrenheit,Shinee etc(Plus their repetitive songs like Again Again, Sorry Sorry, Tell Me , Nobody, Gee doesnt help either) ..All they have are good looks and are just trained cuz they know fangirls will buy into it. I mean they dont even have raw talent compared to real artists like Seo Taiji, Se7en, JiSun,Lim Jeong Hee,Shin Hyesung,Mate,Clazziquai etc.. Thats why I tend to listen to more underrated artists or have actual talent be it Chinese , Korean or Japanese artists like M-Flo , Khalil Fong , Yoshika, Lee Hom, Yuya Matsush*ta, Mayday, Clazziquai, Big Bang (sometimes), Epik High,Younha, Seo Taiji etc..

hyesung's voice is pretty mediocre imo

I always feel like falling asleep when I see him perf live o_O lol
and as much as I really like se7en for being a great performer and personality, his singing itself isn't anything to rave about...

american music of course
the quality is better. well some genres... not much of a rap fan.

some people are like "i hate american music. it's crap because it always has things about sex, money, gangs, etc."
what do those people listen to? haha.. stereotyping.

asian music sounds just like american music but in a different language
well some do.. mainstream ones.

and by asian i assume you're talking about east asian? i dont listen to it
some of the poppy things i've come across makes me want to pull my hair out
like that one song that goes "lolli-lolli-oh lollipop"
the beginning of the song drove me insane crazy.gif

^ Word. haha.

and yeah, a lot of the more unknown and underrated artists are better than some major ones.
they aren't influenced as much by what their companies say, if you know what i mean..

Depends on the genre. Also, I guess I'd pick American music in terms of variety and originality, but for lyrics, definitely Japanese songwriters. (If we're talking mainstream here, and even if we're not, I believe most of the nicer English lyrics come from European groups... but, I'm hardly the expert.) I can't talk for the other Asian languages, as I cannot speak them.

Your last statement about American music having loopy patterns and Asian music being more unique is bogus.

Let's establish a basic viewpoint and generalize the mainstream music of both parties. Both sides have their loopy music from Lady Gaga (P-p-p-p-p-poker face) to Wondergirls (T-t-t-t-t-tell me). You'll always have garbage mainstream music and really good ones every once in a while. Korean mainstream music, for the most part, derive from American mainstream music. And yes, Michael Jackson. If you really dig deep into other artists, instead of just scraping off the surface with DBSK and Wondergirls, you'll start to notice that Asian ballads start to sound the same as well. This includes those filler songs that they throw into albums.

Even though 90% of what I listen to is Asian, the only reason is because I've fallen into image that the Asian music industry has put out (ex. Cute SNSD girls). In terms of quality, I know that GEE isn't anything close to the same quality as something like Yael Naim's New Soul (random fun song).
