Sympathy Votes on talent shows

I know I sound so harsh here but I can't help how I feel. Don't you just hate it when contestants on talent shows (America's/Britain's Got Talent etc) start crying or tell a sad story and then they go through to the next round, even if they weren't that great? It does make me wonder if it's partly a bit planned in order to win sympathy votes. I understand that performing may be emotional for some people, I don't have a problem with that. It just bugs me when people are blinded by it. Maybe I'm just cynical.
What do you think?

Yeah it's like their seeking for attention...
There are probably more people who had it worst and they don't complain about it..

Haha right now i'm thinking of Holly Steel from Britains Got Talent
i didn't really like her performance and think she got the sympathy vote but then agian i prefered her over Greg
Sometimes the money they make from winning/ the fame or whatever can really help better their lives so idk but sympathy votes can only get you so far

agh i can't stand it either, it really bugs me... people should get votes for their talent not for what they've been though
+ hollie steel; it was really embarassing and painful to watch.
she's too young and nervous to perform although she has a good voice! i prefered greg

Right when I saw this, I knew you were talking about Holly Steel!
That really annoyed me, she shouldn't have gotten through. Even if Greg's performance wasn't great, his original audition was and he could've made a comeback in the final. This little girl's voice isn't even that great. Honestly, this sounds mean but I think she really put that act on. Sure I think she was upset, but once she saw it was working for her, I think she kept it going because that crying was not all that convincing.

I adored Hollie Steel up until Friday's show. She was my favourite, but she in no way deserved that second chance. At all. I'm upset they gave it to her because the world thinks she got through out of pity when she should have been there for her talent. To use an excuse that she's a child is stupid. Shaheen Jafargholi is a child, and he was so stunningly mature and professional.
All that being said, I find it astonishing that people don't think she's talented. She's fantastic!

YES! I saw that and I.. wanted to hit her! She shouldn't have been allowed to restart her song. If she was allowed to redo her song, then all the other contestants should be able to do the same. Just because she cried (which was so annoying...) doesn't mean that they should have gave in. Ugh, I hate kids...

I can't believe everyone in that audience, the judges and the audience watching tv who voted for her in top 3 fell for that act of hers. Now she really learned her 'lesson'.
"Just throw a tantrum and you'll get your way"..
The entire time she cried, I didn't see ONE SINGLE TEAR. What a bratty kid... I thought she was fine until that episode. I thought the judges were extremely rude for voting Greg off and the reasons they gave. -____-
Pretty certain she messed up and forgot her lyrics.. ugh
