There isn't really such a thing as best brand.

Common brands are Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, etc.

^She didn't specify that she wants a DSLR o.O

You need to be more specific on what you want in a camera. Cameras have certain features/settings that tailor to people's needs.

Maybe she just wants a simple point and shoot. If so go take a look at the Canon SD1100.

Perhaps a drop resistant one like the one http://gizmodo.com/347420/olympus-stylus-1...nd-freeze+proof would be good if you happen to be destructive like to the poor canon sad.gif

I'm looking for one, too.
But I don't wanna spend over $170..
I've had my eye on the Canon SD1100 but it's hard to find a deal with it.

I have both the Canon SD780IS and the Olympus... can't remember the model, but it's water and shock resistant.

The canon is the P&S I use the most, and the only time I use the olympus is when I go to water parks and want to take pictures.

I found that almost all P&S cameras are good in outdoor, sunny conditions, but differ in varying degrees in lowlight or indoor photos; all of which to be honest aren't that good.
The olympus is REALLY bad in lowlight conditions. The noise on it is ridiculous if the flash isn't used, and even when it is, the photo always looks off and definately worse than my Canon.

I'n my opinion, any P&S camera that doesn't have a retracting lens (like the Sony T series) just aren't as good.

For just digital cameras, the only cameras I've ever owned were all canon powershots. I really like the image quality and settings they have

I used to have a Nikon; I have a Fuji at the moment, and my brother has a Minolta and Lumix... but despite it being the oldest, I say Nikon was the best. I took really good shots, REALLY easily... while with the Fuji, it's hard to get the colour I want; not sure about my brother's cameras but the Lumix - the one time I used it - was amazing.

*Note, all the cameras mentioned in the paragraph above aren't the thin type of cameras; they're the bulky ones with lots of settings. XD

EDIT: I just remembered I had a thin, Canon camera that ran on batteries... not good. Batteries ran out really quickly and I took lots of blurry shots overall. @__@ My philosophy in camera purchasing is purchase one that is either 1) ON SALE; SO IT'S A /REALLY/ GOOD PRICE E.G. my Fuji, dropped like $80 + my Canon one just broke
OR BUY 2) A REALLY GOOD CAMERA (e.g. bro's Lumix; though expensive - WORTH IT.
