It depends on the person. Typically, freshmen gain weight because they're not exposed to healthy eating that's usually found from eating at home. Meal plans offer more fatty foods than healthier foods and college and university students tend to eat out more for convenience and to save time.

If an individual has enough time and ability to cook for themselves, they probably wont' choose to eat out as much and have healthier food choices. If one is lazy or simply doesn't have enough time to cook, they might resort to fast foods or junk food, thus gaining weight.

Changes in sleeping patterns and general schedule and routine may cause weight loss/gain as well.

Its weird because I saw alot of people gain weight but alot of my friends lost weight too. I actually got into way better shape during my freshman year even though I stuffed my face and played beer pong every weekend throughout the whole year. I'm guessing the reason is because NYU isn't a closed campus which = a ton of walking, and I hit the gym on a regular basis.I really think that as long as you go to the gym a couple times a week and try to eat consistently your metabolism should take care of your weight.

I've been away from home for about a week, classes haven't started (I'm moving in tomorrow), and I already feel the weight gain. It is definitely true because you don't have many choices on what to eat--mostly fast food at your campus. It's been a big change for me because I'm used to eating home-cooked food at lunch and dinner and here, it's all eating out sad.gif I've been craving fruits fruits and fruits for the past two days and haven't been able to get any

Good thing SDSU has an awesome gym, and everyone living in the dorms get free access too happy.gif

I wonder if that's true... hmmm.... But for me, I think I'll lose more weight than gain because right now my parents/grandparents are like forcing me to eat so much (and I hate refusing food because then they whisper secretly or something that I don't like their food T^T) I love healthy food so much, but my family uses a lot of oil, so I would change that when I go to college... smile.gif

But in truth, I think many people gain more weight during freshman year at college because they are FREE.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves."

it just depends on your eating/drinking/exercising habit
if you have a bigger campus you might lose some weight if you maintain the same eating habits.. cause that's what happened to me..
but the drinking does add some pounds
people tend to eat more and eat late because places on campus open till like 4am

I didn't haha.

Since my grandparents lived with us at home, food was always there so having easy access with a meal plan didn't really change much. And not having grown up with soda, I only drank juice or milk at the DC. But, I guess I lost a little weight with the biking and walking I did to get to class. I didn't have access to a car like I do at home so those were my main modes of transportation. I walked up and down four flights of stairs multiple times daily. You also get sick of dorm food pretty fast.

I also didn't drink and I actually had a better sleep schedule that I did in hs because my roommate slept pretty early. xD

I came home this weekend for the first time since school started and was suprised to find that I lost ten lbs! But I saw my friend and she gained ten lbs. I feel terrible for her because it shows but she doesn't even realize it..

Myth
It's just about taking care of yourself
If you do, then you can maintain your weight
Eating out too much, drinking too much...not enough exercise...of course you'll put weight on
Anybody would (unless you're one of the lucky ones and have a fast metabolism) it's not just freshmens.
I actually lost weight in my first year...around 3kg?

I think you either gain weight or lose weight when you enter college as a Freshman.

True for me...I gained 20lbs after my freshman year and I didn't even live on residences...! During breaks from class, my friends and I always went out to grab a bite from the most unhealthiest places. Anyone that goes to UTSG in Toronto knows that it's all junk food around campus. We got hotdog stands allover the place, those truck vendors selling burgers, fries, poutine and chinese food (mind you the chinese food is MSG LOADED)... then you got Mcdonalds..! Full of heart clogging goodness.... I swear I lost 5 years out of my life from eating so much junk that year.

It obviously doesn't happen to everyone... a lot of people who find freshmen year really stressful, or find the food repulsive, or are very vigilant of their weight to begin with, may actually lose weight, but the freshmen 15 is definitely real, and it's happened to MANY people I know. I personally can testify... I gained 10 lbs freshmen year...I mean how can you not when you don't go to the gym consistently, you eat as much as your dude friends do, and order in at 3AM? When I got home last summer though, I dropped the 10 lbs quickly and effortlessly. My mom cooks really healthy. >_>

I think my biggest tip for NOT gaining weight is to avoid eating so much so late at night. I was the kind of person who went out to eat after every get-together until 1 in the morning... and who ordered food for delivery way past midnight. OH... and I also had WAYYY too much bubble tea last year (there's a lot by my school). According to results found on google, each tapioca ball is 7-15 calories each, not to mention they're made of starch and sugars, so that gets converted to fat.
