SAN FRANCISCOJune 8, 2009Apple today introduced the new iPhone 3G S, the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including improved speed and performanceup to twice as fast as iPhone 3Gwith longer battery life, a high-quality 3 megapixel autofocus camera, easy to use video recording and hands free voice control. iPhone 3G S includes the new iPhone OS 3.0, the worlds most advanced mobile operating system with over 100 new features such as Cut, Copy and Paste, MMS*, Spotlight Search, landscape keyboard and more. iPhone 3G S customers get access to more than 50,000 applications from Apples revolutionary App Store, the largest application store in the world where customers have already downloaded over one billion apps. iPhone 3G S offers twice the capacity for the same price with a 16GB model for just $199 and a new 32GB model for just $299.** And beginning today, iPhone 3G is available at the breakthrough price of just $99 for the 8GB modela huge milestone for the high end smartphone market.

iPhone 3G S is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet and we think people will love the incredible new features including autofocus camera, video recording and the freedom of voice control, said Philip Schiller, Apples senior vice president of WorldWide Product Marketing. And with a breakthrough price of $99, we are thrilled to get iPhone 3G into the hands of even more users who want them.

iPhone 3G S offers incredible speed and performance, on average up to twice as fast as iPhone 3G, so you can render web pages quicker and launch applications faster. iPhone 3G S takes advantage of the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard for stunning high-quality 3D graphics, making mobile gaming and other graphic intense applications better than ever. iPhone 3G S is not only faster, but with longer battery life you can watch more videos, listen to more music, browse the Internet or keep using your favorite apps even longer. The new iPhone 3G S also supports 7.2 Mbps HSDPA for faster networking speeds.***

iPhone 3G S features a new 3 megapixel autofocus camera that takes amazing pictures and video, making it easier than ever to capture, edit and share those moments instantly with family and friends. The new autofocus camera adjusts focus, exposure, color and contrast for the best possible image and includes an automatic macro focus for extra close up shots. With the new tap to focus feature, you simply touch the display to select an object or area of interest and the camera automatically re-adjusts focus and exposure. You can record incredible high-quality video clips and edit them right on your iPhone 3G S by simply trimming the start and stop points. With iPhone 3G S you can send photos and video by email or MMS and post them to MobileMe or YouTube with just one tap.

The voice control feature in iPhone 3G S offers hands free operation for both iPhone and iPod functions. Simply speak the appropriate commands into the built-in microphone or headset microphone to dial by name or number. With voice control you can play your favorite music by artist, album or playlist and activate the Genius feature by saying play more songs like this. You can also tell iPhone to pause the music, play the next track, turn on shuffle or ask, Whats playing right now?

iPhone 3G S features a new built-in digital compass for instant navigation.**** The Compass app shows you which way you are headed and rotates as you change direction. You can orient yourself to true north or magnetic north, and iPhones built-in GPS automatically displays the coordinates of your current location. The new built-in digital compass is also integrated within Maps, so it automatically orients any map to the direction you are facing.

iPhone 3G S provides new accessibility features including VoiceOver, a screen reader that speaks what appears on the iPhone 3G S display, enabling visually impaired users to make calls, read email, browse web pages, play music and run applications. The new universal Zoom function magnifies the entire screen, and the White on Black feature reverses the colors on screen to provide higher contrast for people with low vision. iPhone 3G S also supports Mono Audio which combines left and right audio channels so that they can be heard in both earbuds for those with hearing loss in one ear.

iPhone 3G S includes the new iPhone OS 3.0 software with more than 100 new features including: Cut, Copy and Paste; MMS; Spotlight Search to search across iPhone or within Mail, Contacts, Calendar and iPod; landscape keyboard for Mail, Messages, Notes and Safari; expanded parental controls for TV shows, movies and apps from the App Store; and the ability to capture and send audio recordings on the go with the new Voice Memo app. iPhone 3.0 software also includes a new Find My iPhone feature that works together with MobileMe so you can locate your lost iPhone on a map, send a message that will appear on the screen or play a sound to help you find it even if your phone is set to silent. If you cannot find your iPhone, you can erase all data and content on your iPhone with the new Remote Wipe feature. New iTunes features available with iPhone 3.0 software include wirelessly downloading movies, TV and audio programs as well as iTunes U so students can download learning materials on the go.

iPhone 3G S gives users access to the revolutionary App Store, the largest application store in the world with more than 50,000 applications. The App Store allows developers to reach tens of millions of iPhone and iPod touch users around the world. To date, customers have downloaded more than one billion apps from the App Store. And with more than 1,000 new APIs available with the iPhone SDK, developers can create even more innovative applications using In-App Purchases, a new Maps API and Push Notifications.

iPhone 3G S also features built-in Nike + iPod support making it an incredible workout companion. Users simply place the optional Nike + iPod sensor ($19) in their Nike + shoe to seamlessly connect with iPhone 3G S to track miles run or sync with the latest generation gym equipment.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

I CANT FRKIN WAIT TILL 6 PM TODAY!!!

thread will be updated when that happens and see if the predictions are true!

Apple's (AAPL) Worldwide Developers conference kicks off Monday with a keynote led by Apple marketing boss Phil Schiller. Apple execs will show off parts of the new iPhone 3.0 operating system. And someone -- Phil; Steve Jobs? -- is expected to show off a new iPhone.

Most likely new iPhone features, as either we or others have reported:

* Faster processor.
* More storage capacity.
* Faster Internet speeds.
* Video recording.
* Better camera.
* Digital compass.
* More iPhone 3.0 software features, such as video editing, and potentially a new home screen that's better designed for organizing and launching dozens of apps.

The phone will likely look very much like the current iPhone 3G. Some reports suggest a matte, rubbery back. But many "leaked" photos are fake. Then there's a slew of other potential features, some of which Apple could unveil Monday, too, such as a front-facing camera for video chat, background app processing, or multi-colored iPhones

Just as important: What Apple announces regarding AT&T's iPhone service plans. Specifically, if AT&T will offer some sort of entry-level iPhone plan that is less than $70/month, or if it will at least make its plans a better deal by including unlimited text messaging. (Sprint is doing this for the Palm Pre.) The iPhone itself is still too expensive for many buyers. And the service plan is, too.

And about pricing: It makes sense that Apple would keep its new, premium iPhones at the $199/$299 price levels. But it seems that a cheaper iPhone, perhaps will less storage or a few missing components, could show up for $99 or $149.

It's coming out on June 19th.
$199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB
The 8GB iPhone 3G is now $99
No mention of cheaper data plans.

So it look exactly the same as the 3G but is faster and has better battery life. It comes in white/black, 16/32GB.
NO video chat
NO OLED monitor
NO glowing apple icon
Has a compass
Has voice control
Supports 7.2 HSPDA
3.0MP auto focus camera/records video
MMS coming later this summer- sounds like it's due to AT&T

I followed the entire WWDC- the emphasis was on software- iPhone 3.0, its features, and the various applications- from tomtom GPS, renting a zipcar and unlocking the car door with the iPhone, etc. No revolution- careful evolution. If I had a iPhone 3G, I wouldn't get the 3GS.

I'm disappointed there was no OLED, and kinda disappointed with no change in the design, but I can live with it as a iPhone virgin.
I was really disappointed in the fact that there was no discounted monthly plan. I don't care if I can get an iPhone for $100, the monthly bill will be $100, that's what kills you.

Had the monthly plan been just $10 cheaper, I'd be in line June 19th. Now it all depends on my discount I can get at work. It can vary from nothing to 25% off the monthly fee... or so I hear.

I want to hear that battery life has defintely improved and I need to see a big-time discount from work before I commit to iPhone 3GS.

I really want the new iPhone because of the camera -- it's 3.2mp and has autofocus >_<

But I bought the iPhone 3G when it came out last year so it's going to be uber expensive for me tears.gif

I don't know if this question is exactly related... but, can I just upgrade to the iPhone right now, while in the middle of my current 2 year contract? (I do have AT&T right now) It would just mean I tack on the data plan, no? This whole thing kinda confuses me. I got all excited over the new price and some of the features :3

Wait.. I just finished watching the guided tour and it didn't mention typing in landscape.. wasn't that an issue with the iphone 3G? Or am I just pulling this out of my ass?

i really wish the design of the phone changed a bit.. a matte backing would've been great. The compass feature is really great for me since I never know which way I'm going on a map lol, that beam of light will help a lot biggrin.gif

I'm still getting it haha..
Oh.. and what does laptop tethering mean?

Can somebody confirm this? So I'm sure a lot of people haven't bought iphones yet because Apple would be releasing a new one very soon. I'm under contract on AT&T and am eligible for an upgrade on July 1st. I've never had an iphone so does this mean that if I buy the iphone 3GS on july 1st, it will be $199? (the 16gig) I hear a lot of things ranging from $300 to $500! Hope that's not the case..

You have to wait until July 1st in order to get the iPhone 3GS for $199. If you get it before, the price is $399. So you should wait until July 1st lol...

As for me, my contract doesn't end until next year, so I'd rather shell out the money and get it now rather than wait until next year... Yeah -.-

QUOTE
As endlessly predicted, Apple's unveiled a new iPhone today at WWDC, the iPhone 3G S -- the "s" stands for speed. Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it's much, much faster -- some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance -- and just as expected,it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features. you're also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. There are some surprises, too -- holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple's touting a new "fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating." New and end-of-contract pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB when it goes on sale June 18th Stateside and in 80 more countries in August -- and the current 8GB 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately. You'll have to pay a bit more if you're mid-contract, though -- $299 for the 3G and $399/$499 for the 3G S.

if it has video recording it will have video chat too no??
EITHER WAY AHH! IM SO EXCITED!

call your at&t rep and see if they can do anything for you, usually if the difference is half a month they are willing to bend. Like i'm on t-mobile and usually they will give you the upgrade price 1 month before your contract is up.

I'm still excited for the iphone3g S lol.

True though I'm super disappointed about GPS and the same design.

Still glad it has video, copy paste (yes!), and I like the autofocus camera too.

Can't wait until July wooo!
