Character Descriptions

Shindo Issei (42) played by Eguchi Yosuke

A talented surgeon who possesses one of the best surgical skills. His ability as an emergency and critical care doctor is also first rate. Because of the swiftness of his diagnoses and accuracy of his treatments, he earned himself the nickname, “God Hand”. He doesn’t run away from bitter reality and difficulties, and possesses the tenacity as well as grit to take the lead in facing them. He is usually calm and collected. However, contrary to his cool apperance and behaviour, he is a warm and sincere man who practices medicine from the a patient’s point of view. He lost his beloved wife Saki and has remained single ever since. In summer 2009, he returned to Japan after the end of an international humanitarian mission in Africa and became an emergency doctor at Kainan Medical Hospital’s emergency and critical care centre in Yokohama.

Kojima Kaede (34) played by Matsushima Nanako

She has unusually strong compassion for patients. A competent emergency doctor who is proactive and does everything she can in attending to the patients. Originally fresh and cheerful in character, she always smiles at patients no matter how tired she may be. During her school days, her ambition was to be a pediatrician but she was supervised by Shindo during her time as a houseman, and decided to be an emergency doctor. Her fiancee, Kaga Hiroki, died in an earthquake and she was once on the brink of heartbreak but she pulled through and works hard as an emergency and critical care doctor. However, in the midst of this, an incident occurs and she is sued for medical malpractice …

Yamashiro Saeko (35) played by Kimura Tae

An expert who is a qualified emergency nurse and always performs her duties to perfection. She is now a divorcee after separating from Dr Jojima Shun, and a mother of a daughter. She has been working at Kainan Medical Hospital’s department of radiology but when she meets Shindo, whom she had worked with in Kohoku Medical Hospital, again, she transfers to the emergency care centre. Hiding the fact that she is a single mother, she starts working there but gradually finds it impossible and begins to feel troubled.

Kamoi Chinatsu (22) played by Kitano Kii

A new nurse who has been working at the leading emergency care centre since this spring. Although she is cheerful, positive and cares for patients, her eagerness proves completely futile and she is rather unreliable. She is sharp with Kudo Ryosuke, the ever cold houseman, and admires nurse Yamashiro.

Sawai Etsushi (40) played by Santamaria Yusuke

One of the top medical staff at Kainan Medical Hospital and a highly skilled heart surgeon. He temporarily withdrew from the scene of emergency care as a result of an incident that happened severals years ago. After that, he went on to work in ER in the Untied States but became the head of an emergency and critical care centre as an emergency doctor. Single. Born to a family of doctors. Because his father and grandfather both attended Tokyo University’s faculty of medicine, he feels inferior for being the only one to have failed to qualify for Tokyo University. He is rationally pragmatic and takes no chances. He always prepares himself for the worst and will thoroughly explain the medical condition to patients and their families. He clashes with Shindo because of the differences in his way of thinking but the two of them are alike in their stoic demeanour and desire to ensure that people’s lives are saved.

Kudo Ryosuke (26) played by Ishida Takuya

A houseman. As luck would have it, he arrives at the centre which has been cleared out of emergency doctors. Although he thinks the training at the emergency care centre will be an excellent place for him to hone his skills, he is one of those young folks nowadays who is coolly pragmatic about the futility of prolonging his stay there. However, he is influenced by Shindo and the others and aspires to be an emergency doctor. He and Chinatsu, who is also a newcomer, repel each other.

Tanbara Hiroshi (30) played by Tamiyasu Cho

An ophthalmologist who is at the emergency medical care centre on a temporary basis. There are no irregular hours and ophthalmologists are seldom called away on emergencies, which is why he chose ophthalmology. However, he is good as an eye specialist doctor. Coming in touch with the basis of medical treatment at the sites of emergencies, he gradually discovers the challenges of the emergency and critical care centre.

Noguchi Akimitsu (41) played by Yashiba Toshihiro

An ENT doctor who is at the emergency medical care centre on a temporary basis. Because it is the orders of the hospital’s director, he has no choice but to help. He may be a doctor too but emergency medical care is completely outside his specialty and he stumbles over rudimentary things but gradually grows as an emergency doctor through his perseverance.

Moriya Takafumi (60) played by Ono Takehiko

The head of the emergency and critical care centre. He used to be a doctor filled with a sense of justice but he loses this over time. As a middle-management executive, he is caught between a rock and a hard place, and turns into someone completely fearful of rocking the boat.

Uraga Masayoshi (65) played by Yamada Meikyo

The director of Kainan Medical Hospital. Unable to tolerate the rigorous work, doctors from the emergency and critical care centre resign en masse. He orders Moriya to secure new emergency doctors in order to save the situation.

Fuji TV has decided to resume shooting for the fourth season of the "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" drama series. Earlier this month, lead actor Eguchi Yosuke sustained serious injuries in a motorcycle accident, forcing Fuji TV to halt filming.

Eguchi's injuries were said to require two months for a full recovery. With the show originally scheduled to start on July 7, filming had already started by that time but had to be delayed due to Eguchi's condition. The premiere has now been pushed to early August. Shooting will begin again on June 28, starting with scenes that do not involve Eguchi.

Actor Eguchi Yosuke (41) has just been hospitalized due to an unfortunate accident on his motorcycle.

At about 7:30pm on Wednesday night, Eguchi filled up his motorcycle at a Shibuya gas station and was making a left turn onto the street. He suddenly stepped on his brakes to avoid colliding with an approaching bicyclist, but it resulted in his motorcycle overturning. Eguchi was taken to the hospital and is said to have fractured his collarbone and a rib. The 36-year-old salaryman who was riding the bicycle was not injured.

Eguchi is set to co-star with Matsushima Nanako in the fourth season of Fuji TV's "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" drama series, scheduled to start on July 7. The severity of his fractures has not yet been reported, and it is not yet known how much the injuries will impact production on the drama.

Fuji TV's popular medical drama "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" is coming back for a fourth season. Starring Eguchi Yosuke (41) and Matsushima Nanako (35), the show premiered in 1999 and had additional seasons in 2001 and 2005.

Eguchi and Matsushima will reprise their roles as emergency room doctors. Matsushima has not had a regular TV role since the drama's third season in 2005 (though she had a guest role in both seasons of "Hana Yori Dango"). This also marks her first series since having her second child in November 2007, just as the third season was her comeback work after giving birth to her first child in 2004.

Santamaria Yusuke (38) will join the cast for this season, playing a rival doctor. Other cast members include Kimura Tae (38), returning in her role as a nurse from the second season, and Kitano Kie (18) as a rookie nurse.

Fuji TV has scheduled the drama for Tuesday nights at 9:00pm, starting on July 7.

It was reported in the news today that Eguchi Yosuke was involved in an accident when his motorbike flipped over as he tried to avoid a cyclist. He apparently suffered a broken shoulder or collarbone and the severity of his injuries are not known. There is no word on whether filming for the drama will be affected by this.

You don't have to watch the first 3 seasons Luthien unless you want to know more about Dr Shindo and Dr Kojima's backgrounds. Otherwise you can just plunge right in.

I liked season 2 the best. That's the one that didn't have Nanako inside. It starred Matsuyuki Yasuko opposite Eguchi Yosuke. Nanako's kind of bland in her role in contrast to Matsuyuki who gave her character spunk. Too bad they didn't think to get her back for another season.

This season's theme sounds too familiar. It was covered somewhat in Iryu 2 and Tomorrow also. I don't know how different it can be except that it now pertains to ER doctors rather than general physicians.

Season 4 was halted earlier this month, but filming will pick up on June 28th. Instead of broadcasting on July 7th, premiere is pushed back for early August. News updated on first post.

Jade_frost, I was actually more interested in this drama because of Nanako. wub.gif Thanks for the advice! biggrin.gif

This was in last week's news from Yomiuri with a bit of description of the plot:

Some bad news for fans of the excellent Fuji drama series Kyumei Byoto 24-ji: The series was scheduled to return on July 7 with Part Four, a realistic look at the toll the nation's doctor shortage is taking on emergency room care by focusing on a malpractice suit brought against Kojima (Nanako Matsushima). It looks like the starting date will be pushed back while Yosuke Eguchi, who plays super-surgeon Shindo, himself spends part of his summer in the hospital recovering from broken bones incurred in a motorcycle accident last week. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to one of Japan's best actors, who has distinguished himself in a very long list of quality dramas.

Haha. Well, I'm not very into Nanako. I find her too bland for my liking. I prefer spunky characters. ie. Matsuyuki Yasuko's Dr Kosaka.

Season 1 is really old so it's difficult to find on the net. Your best bet will be renting it from your VCD store. As much as I was crazy over Eguchi Yosuke, I never got past the first two episodes of season 1.

Looks like Inoue Mao will be guesting in 2 dramas this season. If I remember correctly, she was in Season 3 right? The earthquake one?

I misread the announcement. Correction: The four actors and actresses will appear in a SP on Nanako's character, Kojima Kaede called "Kyumei Byoto 24-ji ~ Kyumeii Kojima Kaede ~. This will air from 14 July to 4 August, the earlier date probably being the initial date that Fuji TV was planning the start of the new season of Kyumei Byoto. Old and new footage will be used in this SP which will show Kaede's relationship with them among other things. Perhaps the footage with Miyasako Hiroyuki will be new since he was in Season 2 which Nanako didn't appear in.

Inoue Mao played a girl who wanted to end her life in Season 3.

From Japan Times"

The fourth season of the popular medical drama, "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji", which premiered in 1999, was supposed to begin on July 7, but one of the drama's stars, Yosuke Eguchi, who plays a surgeon, was involved in a motorcycle accident just as filming started.

The producers went into overdrive and came up with "directors cuts" combining footage from past series that includes Eguchi with new footage that brings back some favorite guest stars.

This week's kinkyu (emergency) special features Sae (Mao Inoue), who in season 3 repeatedly attempted suicide and thus became familiar to the workers at the Seiwa Daiichi Hospital emergency room. Now, it is Sae who saves the life of a woman who tries to kill herself. She calls an ambulance just in time. At the hospital, Dr. Kaide Kojima (Nanako Matsushima), is happy to see Sae again, and Sae tells her what has been happening in her life since the last time they met.

Oh, i thought Mao was in episode one.. but instead it's just a special?

Was the execution more special than the event of this episode? I couldn't resist, I read the spoiler.

Seriously, I'm in a drought... I tried watching a few so far, and Dandy Daddy entertained me most. huh.gif I'm following Tenchijin.. Orthos no Inu, I'm not feeling Tackey.. Maybe Ninkyo Helper.. Still waiting for others to be subbed, I'm quite hopeful laugh.gif

Haha. Then I'm suffering a bigger drought since I've only attempted Love Call Centre, Kareinaru Spy and Kanryotachi no Natsu. Dropped all of them after 1 episode. I can't wait for fall (which is promising to be slightly better)! I haven't watched these four night specials since there's little reason to. Eguchi Yosuke is the big draw for me. I wonder if he's recovered enough to withstand the demands of filming. Hope they let him rest well!

The question on my mind is will this turn out to be similar to Iryu 2, Tomorrow? It seems to have elements of Iryu 2 in particular just with a focus on ER this time round.

"Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" still sees strong ratings
Translation: Tokyograph
Source: Sponichi Annex
2009 August 12, Wednesday

The fourth season of Fuji TV's drama series "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" opened on Tuesday night. Starring Yosuke Eguchi and Nanako Matsushima, the popular show averaged about 20% ratings for its first three seasons, and this one appears to be on track for another strong performance.

For Tuesday's premiere, ratings in the Kanto region achieved an average of 20.3%. This is weaker than the past season openers (24.0%, 21.5%, and 21.4%), but compared to the other drama series that have been airing this summer, it is still exceptionally high. In fact, it is the first show of this season to break the 20% mark, despite starting a month late due to Eguchi's injury in a motorcycle accident in June.

To fill in the gap caused by the show's delay, Fuji TV aired four special episodes that revolved around Matsushima's character. Ratings for those episodes ranged between 12.5% and 15.0%.
