I desperately need your help! Thanks in advance.

hello. smile.gif i've been floating around this thread for some time, but now since i've been actually studying chinese (mandarin), i think i'll post in here from time to time.

anyways, i'd like to ask when people started to use simplified writing instead of traditional. just for reference. smile.gif thanks. ^^

I believe it was the kuomintang government (so after the last dynasty, before china became communist) that started simplifying the language to make it easier for people especially farmers or what not to be able to read and write more easily. After china turned communist, it was implemented. Singapore simplified their chinese like 6 times or something before finally agreeing on the format used by the communist government. Macau did not use simplified because they were a portugese colony at the time and exempt from Chinese laws, same with Hong Kong being a British colony, and Taiwan where the kuomintang ran to also did not implement it. I'm pretty sure it is illegal to use simplified chinese in Taiwan, and illegal to publish books in simplified as well (but you can import them).

人生交义點: crossroads of life
一個字 煩: one word: frustrating

I suspect you're missing some punctuation somewhere.

I don't think it's illegal to publish books in or use simplified in Taiwan. It's just not common. I know some people that publish books in simplified, but it's generally done in Singapore or Malaysia... hmm... I'll have to check. Simplified is starting to catch on in Taiwan as shorthand.

^I'm pretty sure it is illegal but okay you can check =D For the books, yes that is why I said you can import them as I've seen that happen. BUT, I don't even think you can import them straight from china. It has to go through a third party country or something, since Taiwan is crazy about anything that comes in from China.

crazy.gif You think the KMT did that? No, I think it existed, but the KMT didn't give a damn about literacy. They were corrupt as hell, and they didn't care about the common people. People's eyes were rotting out of malnutrition because the KMT was so corrupt.

The communists were the ones who loved the farmers etc, and implemented it.

I think there was so sort of ideas and talk about simplification before, but the Communists were the ones who really implemented it and systemized it.

It's was one of the last few good things Mao did.

Anyway, question....

does Taiwan still go from top to bottom and left to right? I remember the newspapers were all like that a few years back but now...?

Don't all Asian newspapers? Well, I can only speak for HK, Taiwan, and Japan's papers.

KMT is corrupt and only cares about the wealthy class, back then the majority was peasants, thats why they were kicked out.

Cantonese help please... What does "mo liu" mean? People seem to use it in reference to taking pictures of themselves but I'm not sure. Also, is "lo gong" a cutesy name for boyfriend?
