This is going to sound like a really, really dumb question... But honestly I don't know anything about Mandarin grammar so here goes.
My friend was insistning to me that Mandarin wasn't that hard to learn (hah). But his reasoning was that they didn't even have past tense verb conjugations. Which I admit I insisted without actually knowing that that couldn't be true.

So I came here to find out the truth. Who's right? And while I'm on the subject, does Mandarin or any other Chinese dialect have conjugations in regards to the subject (like English and Spanish do, but Japanese and Korean don't)?
