dey have totally different meanings, 得 mean got, and 的 mean lik belonging to.

i know they have totally different meanings haha
but 得 doesn't mean got does it? i know chinese, i'm just not fluent.

Um, since there is no real answer to this as yet, you could use my poor explanation.


的 = Possesive De, (ie Amy de book (Ahmei de shu))
得 = I don't know what it's called in English, but I'll give you an example and you should be able to work it out (ie, Amy run de fast (Ahmei pao de kuai), Amy eat de slow (Ahmei chi de man)).

得 can also mean must, pronounced DEI (not sure what tone). For example, Wo 得(dei) qu kan. I must go look.
得Dao = Got.

When better help comes your way, maybe my post is useful enough for some understanding. It was pretty cut down .

Anyways, correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Maybe the actual Taiwanese dialect.

Hopefully this will clear out your misconceptions:

的 - de5 - possessive suffix
那件衣服是我的! - na4 jian4 yi1 fu2 shi4 wo3 de5 - That piece of clothing is mine!

的 - di2 - correct, proper
請給我的確的答案! - qing3 gei3 wo3 di2 que4 de5 da2 an4 - Please give me the correct answer!

的 - di4 - goal
這般飛機會幾點抵達目的地步呢? - zhe4 ban1 fei1 ji1 hui4 ji3 dian3 di3 da2 mu4 di4 di4 bu4 ne5 - When will this plane arrive at its destination?

得 - de2 - can
你記得那天我們做了什麼事嗎? - ni3 ji4 de2 na4 tian1 wo3 men2 zuo4 le5 she2 me5 shi4 ma5 - Can you remember what we did on that day?

得 - de5 - verb modifier which follows the verb and precedes the adverb (an adverbial expletive)
保羅跑的非常快! - bao3 lo2 pao3 de5 fe1 chang2 kuai4 - Paul runs extremely quickly!

得 - dei3 - must
你必得要去百貨公司幫我買禮物! - ni3 bi4 dei3 yao4 qu4 bao3 huo4 gong1 si1 bang1 wo3 mai3 li3 wu4 - You have to go to the department store to help me buy a gift!

地 - de5 - an adjunct after a word (usually adjective) to form an adverbial phrase
他偷偷地出去玩了。- ta1 tou1 tou1 de5 chu1 qu4 wan2 le5 - He sneakily left the house to play.
*MUST USE 地*

There are some Cantonese only phrases using 得 and 的 such as:
的士 - taxi
得意 - cute
