Could anybody type out Wo Shi Pa (Mandarin Chinese, simplified) ...Actually, I just need the 'Pa' part. I think this means I'm scared, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am not sure what other members have been saying because 我是怕 (wo3 shi4 pa4) makes no sense. The sentence structure "I am..." varies somewhat from English. I won't go into too much detail right here, but the way to say "I am scared" is 我害怕 (wo3 hai4 pa4).

我是 (wo3 shi4) ... is typically used for your name, occupation, etc.
For example:
我是王建民 (wo3 shi4 wang2 jian4 min2) - I am Chien Ming Wang (a Taiwanese baseball player in the MLB).
我是工程師 (wo3 shi4 gong1 cheng2 shi1) - I am an engineer.

To say "I am... [adjective]", people typically use the following sentence structures:
我一點都不胖 (wo3 yi1 dian3 dou1 bu2 pang4) - I'm not fat at all.
我很胖 (wo3 hen3 pang4) - I am really fat.
我太胖 (wo3 tai4 pang4) - I am too fat.
(PS: 胖 - pang4 sounds a bit more positive than 肥 - fei2)

If you want a more in depth explanation, feel free to PM me.

Yes, that's what I meant when I bolded the 'but'. There's something that has to go with it, and it has to be in context.

Sorry, but that's completely wrong.

Oops, my bad.
Yes, 'wo shi pa' can be used too, but not on its own,
because if used on its own, like japaneseobesession mentioned,
is grammatically incorrect and sounds weird.

...

QUOTE(kurodreams @ Jun 11 2007, 06:14 AM) View Post
you could say wo shi pa but then you would have to add something like:
Due(meaning right, not sure if thats excat pinyin), wo shi pa, denshi(but)...

Uhh... not quite.

QUOTE(JapaneseObesession @ Jun 11 2007, 12:55 PM) View Post
wo shi pa actually sounds very wrong and grammatically incorrect to me

Yes, like 我是一條蛇 (wo3 shi4 yi4 tiao2 she2) - I am a snake.

"wo shi pa" is wrong, the grammar is incorrect.
"wo hai pa" is correct, the grammar is correct.

"shi" is the correct word to use for "am", but in this case you are telling someone how you feel so you would not use "shi", but use "hai". I think "shi" should only be used when telling who you are or what you are.

well iono, but just remember English&Chinese is totally different language, you can't translate into plain English and expect it to make sense w/out adjusting words..ya know, ya know? kekekee

You're right about a few things (like the last paragraph - English and Chinese are totally different languages), but you would not replace 是 (shi4) with 害 (hai4). That's wrong logic.

我怕 (wo3 pa4) also works.

Is this just help for only Mandarin?
Because Cantonese is considered Chinese.

Ai. I'm going to stand here and pretend I passed Chinese school with flying colours...
.____.

我是不好中國話!
Yeah, I typed/wrote "Chinese" wrong. But my Chinese thing was being all crappy.

我是怕 cannot be used on its own, the above posters have already stated the reasons.
but then, can't this be used?

我是怕,但是我还是要勇敢地面对。 (wo shi pa, dan shi wo hai shi yao yong gan de mian dui)
I am scared, but I still have to face it courageously.

In this case, 我是怕 doesn't mean
我= i 是 = am 怕 = scared.

It's more of like, "Yes, it is true that I am scared" instead of just "I am scared" alone.

I don't think I'm speaking any sense blink.gif
It's hard to explain actually.

But to make it easier, just use

我害怕 (wo hai pa) = I am scared/afraid.
or 我很怕 (wo hen pa) = I am very scared.

it's sort of like saying "I is scared" in English
keep in mind that English and Chinese sentence structure and grammars are different

I don't understand why so many posters think that saying "我是怕,但是..." is correct. It's not. For your example, you should simply say 我(害)怕,但是我还是要勇敢面对。

Used on its own or not, 我是怕 doesn't work at all. Just get it out of your systems.

Just for future references, no sentence structures change when you say...
[independent clause], but [independent clause]
English or Chinese... they're the same in this regard.

For example:
I am a teacher, but I'm also a student.
我是ㄧ個老師, 但是我也是一個學生。

I am scared of horror movies, but I still like watching them.
我怕恐怖片, 但是我還是喜歡看。

I am Chinese, but I only speak Spanish.
我是中國人, 但是我只講西班牙文。

None of the clauses change just because you add 但是. If you only say the first part, it's just as valid on its own.

That actually says...
I am not good Chinese [language].

English and Chinese are both SVO languages, so sentence structures aren't exactly "different." The grammar is indeed different though.

Why can't the rest of the posters just trust us and stop trying to prove something that's not true?

Yeah but the "sounds weird" part isn't the sentence structure.

我是怕 should be used with something behind it.
Like 他,那个(SOMETHING)会(SOMETHING) etc...
Just only the three words 'wo shi pa' don't make sense.

But in any case, it's still NOT a translation of "I'm scared."
