Hey,
I'm actually freaking out right now because I think I screwed upon an easy Chinese word in Mandarin.
When you say "shen me" (it means "what" in English), is "shen" second tone or third tone?
There's two ways to write "shen" too.

It should be third tone when you say it.
Good question though, my dictionary says it's second tone. sweatingbullets.gif
Sounds a bit weird to me.

Yupp it should be on the second tone.

什么 SHEN2 ME

什 for simplified Chinese
甚 for traditional Chinese

But yea, in my place, we usually say SHEN3 ME in the third tone xD

CANTONESE HELP

umm. what do you call a friend's dad?
my friend is a guy, but what would i call him?
hes kinda old XD.
would i call him like uncle or something?

i think you should call your friend's dad "sai3 baak3" or "suk1 suk1"...it's more polite

"sai3 baak3" will be more formal and polite...

or just say "uncle"

If your friend's dad is younger than your dad, it should be 'sok sok' or 'ah sok' (It's basically the same)
However, if your friend's dad is older than your dad it should be 'phaak phaak' or 'Sai Bak'. (The same)
But 'sok sok' is more common, so I advise you to use that.

'Sai Bak' is also uncle. But that's if he is family of yours (if it's your dad's brother).
'Sok sok' can also be used to refer your mom's little brother.
'Ko foe' is used for your mom's older brother.

I can be wrong, but that's what I know ^^

i think my dad's brother should be "baak3 baak3(伯伯)" or "daai6 baak3(大伯)"

i don't know, may be it's a difference of culture, i only use "sai3 baak3(世伯)" when i call friends' dad

also, you can call your colleague's, girlfriend's or boyfriend's dad "sai3 baak3(世伯)" ^^

Hi! 大家好!I'm glad I found this thread, cause I'm signed up for the Chinese AP test, and from what people have told me... it's pretty hard (anybody here have any experience with it?). I speak Cantonese fluently and have been Mandarin for about 12 years now, and I was glad to see I could actually read + understand some/most of the things I've seen on here so far, but I definitely need practice. So I guess I'll be checking this thread often! Hopefully I'll be able to help/receive help from people here! smile.gif

没问题的 means no problem.
汇款 hui4 kuan3 means money order.
I think the second part means 'you can give me the money order then.'

Can someone with better Mandarin confirm that? Thanks. sweatingbullets.gif

ni you nao zhi bing - you are mentally ill (something wrong with your brain)
ni bu zhi dao wo zai suo se me - you don't know what I'm saying.
ben dannnn - idiot.

That's all I could make out from it.
Some of the pinyin is off. (ni bu zhi dao wo zai shuo se me) That's probably not relevant. sweatingbullets.gif

edit//
bu shi ji de pi gu - not a chicken's butt.

it's tough cos it's just the pinyin & doesn't even have the tones to go along >_> but from what i deciphered i think it's something like that.

"you have a brain disease. you don't know what i'm talking about. it's not pig's butt, stupid."

your friend doesn't sound very nice >_>
