So I understand mandarin and have conversational speaking skills (but my listening is better than my speaking), but I cannot read or write (I have a harder time writing). Any advice/resources I can take into consideration to brush up on my mandarin (especially reading/writing)? Thanks for the help ^^

^男朋友, for me I'd just call my boyfriend by his name
"Our bodies break down, sometimes when we're 90,
sometimes before we're even born, but it always happens and there's never any dignity in it.
I don't care if you can walk, see, wipe your own ass. It's always ugly. Always.
You can live with dignity, we can't die with it."

QUOTE (roguechinadoll @ Jul 7 2008, 12:46 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Now, a specific example from 一个大四女生的非常日记: 星期天,忽然心血来潮,想到榕树下的校道上走走。高大的校门依旧兀自伫立,
恍惚中仿佛回到了从前,真希望一切并未改变。
I try to reason through it and translate it into my brain in English.
It comes out something like: Sunday, the blood in my heart began moving, I wanted to go walk on a path of [some kind of] trees. The tall gate as before towered over me; in a trance I seemed to have returned to the past, really hoping for a never before change.

QUOTE (Deziel @ Jul 7 2008, 09:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
That last sentence, I believe instead of 并 it's supposed to be 並.
Then the sentence would mean: I hope that nothing has changed.

It took me 5 minutes to decode that. Lol. I suck at Chinese. T_T But seriously, some of those words there don't make sense. 榕樹?=What kinda person talks about those trees. I don't even know what that is. xD They used a lot of words that you don't see normally. =\ It's fine if you didn't understand much of it.

Isn't 并 correct? It does mean "I hope that nothing has changed."

忽然心血来潮: kind of like.. spontaneous, acting on a whim
想到榕树下的校道上走走: I'm not really sure but I googled it and 榕树 is banian/banyan? The sentence is talking about wanting to take a walk on the street of the school under the banyan trees.
高大的校门依旧兀自伫立: oooh, words I do not know but I looked it up XD 兀自= still 伫立=standing for a long time
so it's saying that the door to the school is still standing there even until now I guess.
The last sentence is just like what Deziel said smile.gif

Hope this helped?

Hahaha, in my opinion, when cantonese people call their boyfriends things other than their names, its overly 'lovey dovey cutesy couple'. I can't really think of any normal names they call each other, and the only ones i hear are usually just 'honey' with an asian accent hahaha.

Some couples call each other by their names, but they change it so the character is doubled (in chinese)

i.e. 陳倩 becomes 恩恩 ... lol but its too sweetly =\

Read baby books. x]

Lol, if you wanna learn how to read, the only way is to apply it. Do you like music?
If so, write down the lyrics and translate them word by word.
You also said you can speak right? Then download NJStar. Although the dictionary expires after 90 days, you can still use it to look up single words. They give you the Pin Yin and the definition.

It might be simplified, I'm not sure. I learned traditional all my life, so I can only read some simplified characters. =|

^ actually it should just be 你這個週末有沒有計畫? since 活動 is activities but it would make less sense than 計畫

I think that 計畫 is more on a professional level where as 活動 could be used for hanging out. So I'd go with 活動.

^
機 - Machine
車 - Car

My dictionary says Locomotive aka. Train.

Edit:

Apparently bebemui is also correct.

Agreed. Or you can say:
你這個周末有計劃嗎?

You can use 活動, but 計劃 is more frequently used.
Just a little note: It's actually 劃, not 畫.

"boyfriend" is literally and formally called 男朋友 (nam pun yao)
couples would usually call each other by their names though..or nicknames
but sometimes among friends when they refer to bfs, they could say 條仔 (tiew zai)
which is slang for bf..girls would refer to their bfs to that as well

e.g., 你條仔點啊?? (lay tiew zai deem ah?)
how's your bf?
