Hello, my name is Jasmine. I am from Putnam City West. This year I started to learn Mandarin.
Why? Well, because I want to finally watch those Chinese dramas without reading subtitles!
That probably is not the best reason for learning Mandarin, but truthfully, that was my first intention.
The more I learned Mandarin, and about the Chinese culture. I realized how silly that reason was!
I believe that knowing Chinese is a door to many beautiful and exciting things.
Even though Chinese dramas are pretty good, it's only a glimpse of how amazing China is.
Taking Mandarin this year has opened my eyes to see that.
I am truly fascinated about the language and culture.
Every word, character, I learn is a step into an amazing culture.
I am not taking Mandarin just for the language credit.
I am taking it so that one day, I will have taken enough steps to give me the full experience of China.
Both Chinese and Spanish are very versatile languages.
Why did I pick Chinese instead of Spanish?
I picked Chinese because I love how it is so complex, but can also be so simple.
For example, characters can be so complex, but when you break it down it can be so simple.
The language is complex, but the more words you learn, it can be so simple.
I think the same applies with the culture.
Without any knowledge of Chinese, or of the culture, it can seem very complex.
But with every step you take forward to learning, you can unveil the simplicity of something so incredible.
The first word I learned in Mandarin was "Ni Hao", which means "Hello".
That word is the key word that started my Chinese adventure. Saying "Hello" to every challenge that awaited me.
