It's not that difficult to read simplified Chinese people. Stop making a huge deal out of it. sleep.gif
It's like reading British english when you're used to American english. Well, almost like that, but you get the idea.

Agreed!!! I was one of the ppl that complained that simplified is hard to read...a while back in this thread...but i am determined to learn it!! I have already spend about 2 hrs just reading you guys posts.....and i have learned a lot already...yay!! ....school is out for me already (i go to college thats why) so i'll have lots of free time to learn!!

And thank you guys for typing in Chinese, cuz it is helping me a lot!!! I hope you guys can talk about things like how was your day, any interesting news that u heard, and the likes in Chinese....i would love to read them!!!!

Some questions as i was going through the back logs.....
干 - 大家都"干"了些什么之类的事情
what does that word mean? how do u pronounce it? is it "gan"?.....but isn't gan a swear word ??

How do you use these 2 words in a sentence? could u give volcabulary words that contain these 2 words?
丝 = 絲
扫 = 掃

啃书 – how do u pronounce this, and the meaning? is this a slang...cuz i never heard of it....hehe

Hahaha.. reading your post really made me laugh. I'm not like laughing at you or anything, but you're just really funny. Hahahah laugh.gif

Ok, let me explain a little. And feel free to add on to what I'm about to say too everyone ^___^

干(gan4) is a verb. It means "do" or "to do." It is equavalent to 做.
Example: 大家今天都干了些什么? (What did everyone do today?)
You can also use 做 in this sentence too. Like "大家今天都做了些什么?"
It's the same thing. ^^
干 is only a swear word (FXXX) in Taiwan. But I think China is starting to adopt it. Well, I'm not sure cuz I still havent heard anyone use it yet in China. Haha ~

丝 (si1). I think this word means thread, as in what you use to sew.
丝绸 (si1 chou2), which means silk, is often used together.

扫 (sao3). This means to sweep, like sweeping floor with a broom. This word is always associated with sweeping with a broom I believe.
打扫 (da3 sao3), to clean.
扫大街 (sao3 da4 jie1), to sweep the road. Haha I used to always see people sweeping streets when I was little. ^^;;

啃书 (ken3 shu1). This literally means eat/bite the book. So when I mentioned it, I meant like I really need to start reading the book more. Haha, it's a slang. tongue.gif

You're on summer vacation already? Luckyyyy........ Argh my finals are coming up soon. sad.gif

Soo can 啃 be used as choking too? If so, how would you use that in phrase or sentence format?

Cantonese anyone?

I was watching Infernal Affairs and I kept on hearing this phrase, until eventually it stuck to me. I'm not sure if I got it correctly, but they say it like "Hao aa, hao aa!" Based on what I understood, it's usage can be equated as to saying "Ok, ok!" or "Fine, alright. I get it!"

Did I get that right? And if it does sound familiar, what is the correct pinyin for that? smile.gif

I'm not sure about the other people but with me and my friends, usually we use 'ar' and not 'aa' but I don't know if what we use is considered to be correct or not. Also, 'hao' is more of a mandarin sound, usually in canto it's just 'ho'. but yes, it can mean 'ok!' or 'fine, alright, I get it!.' it just depends on the tone of voice you say it in so it can either be a positive thing to say or a challenging word.

Ohhhh
Is that word usually used in writing? or is that too "foul"? Like... writing an essay for example.

啃? Depends on what context you want to use it in.
啃骨头 (ken3 gu2 tou), which means to bite/eat/suck on a bone, is okay to use in writing. Under that context, it is most likely that you are referring to a dog sucking on a bone.
However, if you use 啃书, like what I used before, then no it is not okay. It is a slang and not for formal writing.

So, it really depends on the context. ^^

The pinyin is pretty off, actually. If I took that and modified the pinyin of the second word slightly, it'd mean "ni qu si ma?" (You're going to die?), and that's not very nice.

What are you doing? : ni3 zai4 zuo4 shen2 me? or ni3 zai4 gan4 shen2 me? (你在做什么?/ 你在干什么?)

What do you want? : ni3 yao4 shen2 me? 你要什么?

Sometimes the "ni" (you) doesn't have to be used, depending on context.

I've heard a lot of people use ni3 gan4 ma2 instead of ni3 zai4 gan4 shen2 me. Is that the same thing? Which is more commonly used?

ni3 gan4 ma2 is more colloquial. Like I said, sometimes the "ni" can be dropped, depending on context.

I think you're trying to say ni2 zuo4 shen2 me 你做什么, which means what are you doing. This is pretty colloquial though. The standard way of saying this phrase would be 你在做什么呢 ni2 zai4 zuo4 shen2 me ne. Neutral tones for the last two characters.
