Hi! I don't know if this is the right place to ask (if not I apologize), but I was wondering if someone can suggest me a good Chinese-English or Chinese-Japanese translation site or maybe some place where I can ask for translations (just like the "Korean help" thread in these forums)
Thanks in advance ^^

http://www.altavista.com it's powered by Babelfish. You get awesome translations like "the bedspread it goes one love half in winter" laugh.gif

Er almost.
But you said, " I'm tired, but I can't possibly go to bed now."
My version: "Wo hen lei le, dan shi wo shui bu zhao" or " Wo lei le, dan jiu shi shui bu zhao"
Both works...
Hope it helped smile.gif

Ah xie xie
What does the 'zhao' mean ? Is it like 'I sleep not able to' ?
I think I've also heard of 3 versions of 'but' -
Dan shi
Bu guo
Ke shi

Is this right and are there any differences between them like which is best to use on what situation?

Thanks.

"Shui bu zhao" would most sound like "can't fall asleep".

Direct translations usually don't sound right anyways, so...

~In reply to Tetra at #7 你们大家怎么样练中文?自己看书啊?
我喜欢张娜拉的音乐。大家也可以去听听,要唸出来啊。
张娜拉首张中文唱片--《一张》 http://www.naracn.com/album07.asp

~In reply to Tetra at #42 大陆人比较喜欢用简体:
不应该说大陆人喜欢用简体。只是在香港和台湾都习惯用繁体字而矣。

~In reply to Putasmileon at #56 But Cantonese isn't 外国人:
同意。然而在内地的机场香港人入境都是使用“Foreigner”通道。

~Tamago86 在 #77 提到... "我以后想去中国并且学习中文,但是我现在在日本很忙.而且我剩下的钱也不多了.有谁能给我些钱吗?"
钱我没有,可是我可以给你精神上的支持。

~tranced_azn 在 #102 提到... i was wondering how to say "i know little bit chinese (mandarin)".
那可以说:“我懂一点国语”。

~MUXU 在 #105 提到... 想打下中文..谁陪我讲讲话吧..@_@''
可是我想不会经常来这里。

……

~cbxjenn 在 #755 提到... can someone translate this for me? --- nm :] got it.
视乎说话的含意。如果是表达 understand the meaning 那可以说“知道”、“明白”、或“收到”(比较通俗的香港用语)。

~Tamago86 在 #759 提到... why peace in Japanese is 平和 but 和平 in Chinese?
首先要明白,日语不等同于中国语。要了解当中的分别……倒不如说当中相同的地方,其实是很少。日文组成的四大架构分别是平仮名、片仮名、罗马字拼音和汉字,当中汉字又包括有三大类,简化汉字、自创汉字、和中国汉字,而只有中国汉字是相同于中文的意思。所以,与其问及为什么是“平和”,那不如说为什么日文是不同于中文,而这是一个非常复杂的问题。

~alygat0r 在 #801 提到... I wanted to say : I'm very tired but I can't go to sleep... is that right ?
可以说:“我虽然很累了但还是睡不着”;或者“我失眠了”。

~DaRkViEt73 在 #802 提到... http://www.altavista.com it's powered by Babelfish.
那个不错,只可惜韩语译不来(没有意思的翻译),有一个好的韩语翻译网站就好了。

ps.
Putonghua is the official language of China
In Taiwan they call it Mandarin but is the same
Cantonese is what people use in Hong Kong (and some regions in mainland)

I was just wondering, what is everyone's "background"? sweatingbullets.gif Like where does your family originally come from, and what language their families "traditionally" speak?

Eg me, my family are from GuangZhou, and I speak 潮州話 [diu jiu/teo chew]...

Hmm what are the most common Chinese dialects besides Mandarin and Cantonese?... I think Hokkein is one of the more 'popular' [as in spoken by more people] dialects... Also on Wiki, they said "Wu" was one of the highest spoken dialects unsure.gif. Is there another name for Wu or...? tongue.gif *has no idea what Wu is*

I'm from Beijing. Born there and lived there for almost 11 years. I speak 普通话 (pu tong hua). And 北京话.
The Beijing 方言 has a lot of words/slang that 普通话 don't have, although most people take 北京话 as 普通话.... It's awfully close, but there're still differences. ><;;

To tell the truth, I have no idea.
I do know that I'm from S'pore and will remain one.
