yeh i'm learning Korean on my own but not properly learning just picking a few things up but reading wise i'm ok i just don't know what i'm reading.

Chinese is hard depending if you were brought up with it or have been exposed to it for a long time, Chinese isnt' an easy language to pick up i'm Chinese and i don't know how to read ALOT of words and if i watch like old dramas where they use the formal way of speaking then sometimes i miss details of what they are ctually saying so i just get a general idea of them talking on the story.

i'm tempted to pick it up again but then i remember what i went through when i was younger so i think i'm just going to self teach by watching drama's and reading text of the net.

I'm not really sure if this goes in this thread;
but whats the major difference between Mandarin(mainland China) and Mandarin(Taiwan)? Is it just the tones?

Usage of words and different expressions mostly. ^^; The tones are exactly the same, just pronounciation may be a bit different..o_O;

Hokkien sounds a bit more coarse in my opinion..diu jiu..or teochew sounds a bit more refined..ahahah....

just started my mandarin lesson. i didn't know it was so hard. i'm actually getting a migraine. i can't get the tones right. i can't read. i hope i'll survive. lol. anyways, i found this thread quite useful. thanks

Is traditional or simplified Chinese more common nowadays? I've been learning simplified for quite some time now and I can recognize some traditional characters. Just wondering which one is more......useful/practical? Cuz I definitely wanna know if I should keep going simplified, traditional, or a mix of both...

Er, actually both is good.
Taiwane and Hongkong uses trad, whereas China uses a mixture of both?
There are places where they use simplified too..
But I don't think there is a big difference.
I grew up learning simplified, but reading trad is no problem to me.
Writing is slightly a problem though.

how would you translate this --> 陈士嘉?

陈士嘉 can be 진 사 가 It's pronounced as Chin Sa Ka...note that Ch can be replaced by J..so Chin can be Jin..and K and G can replace each other so it can be Ka or Ga..

Not really. According to official romanization rules, it's Jin Saga.
