Are you guys required to get a MAC pro laptop too? To the GD Majors.

We get them free as freshman. Macs are the only way to go!

I'm currently attending the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus, (sophomore) looking to get a dual major in Communications and a BFA. I would *ideally* like to finish in 4 years, if not, I may have to settle with a BA in the arts as opposed to a BFA. My main mediums are graphics and drawing. I absolutely LOVE photoshop and web designing. I started getting into video effects this summer, it's so much fun. biggrin.gif

I really want to be an art director in some advertising/publications agency. Though, if that doesn't work out, PR certainly isn't out of the question either, but I would much rather be working in photoshop. lol

If you read, "A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future" he argues that in the near future designers and artists will be extremely vital.

Nice!! I read that book, very insightful. smile.gif Highly recommended, especially when I start doubting myself sometimes =(

for my first portfolio review, i had a bunch of random stuff. some digital, and they required also to add in observational drawings. you should make your portfolio flow, instead of placing a bunch of random things together. although, it's good to show variety (perhaps categorize them out: posters, typography, product/packaging, traditional mediums). whichever mediums you're comfortable in, show those off! biggrin.gif

although, i didn't follow these rules above, they still reviewed it positively because it's your first time. smile.gif if needed, go to an open portfolio review so you can see how other designers/teachers/etc see your work. smile.gif

I was dying to go to Parsons The New School for Design in New York, or Pratt..

However, I decided for the latter, and decided to stay close to home for the Art Institute of Boston of Lesley University. I'm going for Graphic Design and Communication.. However, I don't know if I made a mistake in not broadening my horizons and heading to New York..

I graduated with a BA degree in Studio Art this year at UCR. I am now trying to apply to Art Center for their Entertainment Design program. Originally I was suppose to apply for this fall but my last year of school ended up really hectic and I was unable to make the deadline.

Now I have about half a year to start over and work on my portfolio. The school only accepts 18 students each year for that particular major so I just have to work really hard for the next couple of months.

It's kind of funny because I have a degree now but, I can't really use it for anything.

Im a bit worried, im planning to major in animation but i've been more of a traditional and graphics artist. I dont have much prior experience in animation (only worked a bit with flash and dreamweaver, basic animation programs) I know in college they mainly use Maya but i cant afford the program to practice on and my school doesnt offer any animation class, ive been trying to find a 3d animation class but havent found any yet. Im scared that when i start college i'll be completely clueless because it seems that alot of people (highschoolers) who are planning to major in animation have alot of prior experience mellow.gif You guys think ill be okay?

At Ringling we stress that their is no need for any prior 3d knowledge. You obviously have to enjoy using a computer, but we stress traditional drawing skills over everything for acceptance. So, if you are skilled at drawing, then don't worry about having no 3d experience.

Also, I haven't checked recently, but last time I was on the Maya website they had a free Maya Student Edition on the website for download.

Best of Luck

I check out some of the design schools for graphic designing and the tuition is too pricey in my opinion. SF art academy's and art center's tuition are around $31,000 per year from what I remember for the art center. And that does not include living expenses.

As for me, I am a soon to be junior in UCI, majoring in Studio Art right now. After I graduate, I am planning to apply to Cal State Long Beach or Fullerton for graphic designing. The tuition there are really cheap. Less than $4000 annually.

Just do your research. The major problem I see with going to a regular college rather than an art one is that the economy is hurting and guess what gets cut first, art.

If anyone's done interior design or is going to major in it in college, may I ask what you think of it? Because I kind of want to do it but I haven't tried it before so I really don't know what it's like (and i don't want to waste $20k for one year and get nowhere/no xferable credits). I heard architecture students hardly get sleep haha. The thing is that in my high school, we had to pick majors for the last 2 years and I picked computer science. Figured out I hate it, but we weren't allowed to change. T^T (I really should've picked architecture or industrial design or media, but it's way too late for that lol).

I'm going to college in the fall and the thing is that I actually got into a lot of art schools and/or applied to schools as an art major: Pratt, School of Visual Arts, New York School of Interior Design, BAC, Buffalo, FIT; but in the end, I picked a university in Boston and decided to major in advertising (no idea what it is) because I figured it's broad since it's communication, and I could transfer easily if I wanted to.

I'm thinking about maybe transferring to the school of art and design under my university 2nd semester for interior design if I really decide to do it..but I just wanted to know what you people think of it. :] Thanks for any help!

Go to the university or even a community college. Take classes in drafting, auto-cad, and interior design if possible. Also do research and find out what an interior design curriculum and job entails.

Ah, Yes. I already know the situation. Some of my art classes that are usually offered in UCI, are not offered in the fall anymore. I'm just wishing that after I graduate (which won't be for two more years) that the economy will improve. *crosses fingers* For now, I'll just finish my Studio Art and management minor degree.

Actually, there are other art schools outside of CA that are pretty reasonable. Sucks that I have to find an art school that needs to be close to my family. (Due to family issue).

But if I'm lucky I might get a job after I graduate. As for now, I'll just practice my photoshop skills from all the tutorials I found on the internet.

If you guys are worry about not being able to afford the adobe programs, then I recommend downloading from this site: mininova.org.

I downloaded the Adobe Master Collection. I'm sooo happy. I am playing with all the programs. I recommend downloading from Shadyman b/c his files are usually clean.

Please read all the instructions carefully when setting up the program. I have to reinstall the program a couple of times b/c I missed some of the steps.

Oh fellow Art & Designer here.
I'm a second year student (in September I'm gonna start my third year) attending Gamedesign & Development at the Utrecht School of the Arts. We have 3 specializations here Art, Design and Development(aka programming). I want to specialize myself in both game art and game design smile.gif.

Yay! a design thread.
we sure need this!
=D
any of you designers own a Macbook? cuz thats What I've been noticing heaps of design students carrying around
at uni.

I own one smile.gif!
Though I also have Windows installed here.
Because else I can't use programs I need for my study like 3D Max (3D), XNA(programming) and Hammer(source engine).
And I can't play the PC games I own on Mac so I need Windows for that too (and gaming is "research" in my study so XD).
