Parents want the best for their kid(s) of course, but sometimes we have different plans for our lives than our parents plans (or want us to do). I want to become a teacher and a novelist, someone who lives a happy, non overly materialistic life, helping others who are in need. My dad wants me to become rich and have the things that he didn't have. I love and understand him, but I have a different perception of happiness and fulfillment. He wants me to help others after I become successful, but I want a job whose main purpose is to help people. Money isn't everything to me, but its important of course.
My hugs hurt, so close your eyes because the hug monster is coming your wayyy. rawr ; ]

Well my parents want the best for me also - like you said they want me to do well in school so i could live a better life - not like theirs here in America. Since they've been to the US we've come a long way and I've seen their struggles.
Maybe it's just the way I am but when my parents talk about what they want for me, I want what they want for me more than anything in the world. I know that no matter what I choose to be, if I'm good at what I do, I know that I'll see that proudness on their faces and thats exactly what I want and I'm sure as long as I am happy, they'll be happy.

I think you just need talk to your parents. Tell them what is it you want to be and if you're good at what you do, you're bound for greatness.

Considering that my mother is a nursery school teacher and teacher in general her whole life,
she also wants me to attend college nearby and become a teacher like her.

unfortunately, i dislike children. sad.gif well, at least teaching and watching them.

i told her my plan that i'd like to attend culinary school to become a chef.
she's disappointed, but it's my choice and my future.
if you have your mind set on what you'd like to be in the future, then nothing/no one can really stop you.

sort of, i mean my family wants me to go to Stanford, but for me i really don't want to.
don't get me wrong, i think it's a great school, i just think if i went there there would really be no self recognition just for the name.
but in truth we both hope for me to get into a good UC.
then there comes the part where my parents want me to be a pharmacists, eww.
and how my sister wants me to go to stanford to study there for my career choice since i do wish to be in the medical field.

My mom wants me to be whatever I want to be. She only told me,"Just make sure you get a job that pays a lot so I can retire early okay?! Oh and I want a house and a couple cars." <--lol'd. But my dad wants wants me to be a nurse. I told him I'm going to make video games and he said "It's to hard to get that job" and he got mad when I said "I'm going to Japan anyway". I guess he didn't take me seriously when I've been saying that for the last 5 years. It makes me mad because my dad and my grandma think they can make all my major choices in life. My mom told me to do what I want because everyone deserves a chance at their dream. Like she wanted to be a Pediatrician but because of my dad being in the military, she could nevere finish the school to be one. Now she wants to make sure I do what I want. oh-and she also told me never to do what she does (works at the daycare on base).

I also want to be a musician <3 my mom is supportive of both the careers I intend to pursue. My dad..he used to be. Now he's all 'You should be a nurse, no one makes money in the video game business' pffft. I bet Tetsuya Nomura has enough for some nice things. I'm going to do what I want and hopefully my dad will realize that is what makes me happy and accept it.

unfortunately, no. my parents want me to be in the medical field while i, want to be in the art field. i want to become a graphic designer/photographer but my parents already planned my future which is to be nurse. i love nursing, but it's not what i consider my life in the future. i still have 3 more years to find myself and hopefully by then, i will be able to figure out what i want to be in life.

I know you don't want to go to standford, but
you get so many connections at stanford...ohmygod.
my cousin goes there for grad school, and she knows that son of the CEO of pepsi/target (one of those) and there was also this prince who was in one of her classes. and there's more, but I forgot them. I think the point of going to ivies and prestigious privates(but don't take my word for it, it's just my opinion) is that the high pressure atmosphere will force you to do well , and you'll be able to meet people who can help you and your career in the future.

my parents don't really care what I major in, as long as it's something that I like and something that I have potential in.
they say that if I like what I'm doing, I'll be more likely to succeed and lead a happier life...
I guess I'm lucky in that aspect.

Nope. Father wants me to be a nurse or stockbroker.
Mother wants me to be anything I want to be. Oddly enough, my Mother used
to pressure me into being a lawyer/nurse/ until she worked in Marlton and did the nails
for the abound of teachers there. She now realizes how lucrative and respectful
of a job teaching is =D. Yeah for me! Because I want to be an English teacher!

Of course the Asian parents wanted me to go towards a path that was 'consistent' and would always guarantee me a job... but I felt the pressure of being a doctor and somewhere along the lines of a computer technician or something. Although I've always done fairly well in school, I've always been drawn towards a more creative occupations and those that seem 'unstable' to my parents. In my years, I've wanted to be a writer, a dancer, a journalist, etc. The list goes on. And with all those stupid tests, they have shown that I would best fit these types of careers, especially a journalist. However, the parentals just ignore it and suggest that I study for something worth studying and as much as I understand where they're coming from I am still not sure if I want to follow that path. For now, I've made a compromise and am on a path to Business Marketing, but we will see.

My mom wants me to be whatever I wish to be but my dad wants me to get into a medical field or law. Although I want to study oceanography, I wouldn't mind studying law. happy.gif

My dad doesn't care what I do as long as I go to college. My mom, however, is completely sold on me majoring in petroleum engineering at Texas A&M. She basically have the 4 years after high school mapped out for me. I made a mistake of telling her that I want to look into being a petroleum engineer a while back.

On the other hand, I want to enlist in the Navy. Being a only child and a girl, I know my parents will highly disapprove of this. I'm planning to tell them the news when everything is set in stone.

Not at all. My parents want to be a doctor or pharmacist while I want to be in business just like my dad. They wont allow it because my dad works like 70 hours a week in his own businesses and want me to have a great lifestyle.

Becoming a doctor is hardly easier than going into business. I'd say you'd work the same amount of hours. Depending on what type of physician you want to be, you can work up to 80hrs sometimes. I wouldn't call it a 'great' lifestyle unless you really enjoy working in that field.

Rather than slaving through years and years of school (be ready to sacrifice the next ten years of your life) and shelling out lots of $$ to do something you don't like, use your time and money for something that'll interest you.

It is the obligation of the intelligent to oppress the stupid, otherwise they will take over the world.

both my parents are hardcore azn - im not being racist/stereotypical.
my dad wants me to go to harvard, MIT, stanford, etcetc so that i get rich and in the future, buy him stuff . . .
but he never stops to think that i cant make it . . . and everything he says just puts pressure on me
in the end, he wont be the only one disappointed . . . id be more disappointed to let him down

my mom's more practical - telling me that i should just go to a not-the-top school so that i can be among the top ><
then my dad says shes stupid and thats the reaction of some1 who isnt educated >________>

i guess part of it is my fault because im a very indecisive person. also i have no strongpoints or interests that i want to pursue
soooo bland ; u ;
